CANYON, Texas - #8 West Texas A&M host Colorado State-Pueblo on Thursday, Nov. 23, on the first day of the Pak-A-Sak Thanksgiving Classic at the First United Bank Center. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. Lubbock Christian and Central Oklahoma will play on Thursday with tipoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
The Buffs will host UCO on Friday at 5 p.m. followed by LCU and CSUP at 7:30 p.m. Live stats and video will be provided for both WT games this weekend.
A LOOK BACK AT SCIENCE & ARTS (OKLA.)
West Texas A&M trailed for a total 0f 41 seconds in their 94-49 victory over the University of Science & Arts (Okla.) on Saturday afternoon at the First United Bank Center. WT had five players reach double figures led by 15 points from senior guard Gach Gach.
Gach did all of his damage in 14 minutes of action as the Austin, Minn. native connected of 4-of-8 three-pointers to lead the Buffs. Derrick Geddis had the best game of his young career with 11 points and seven rebounds. The freshman scored nine of his points in the second half including a posterizing dunk in the final minutes of the contest. Drew Evans, Jordan Collins and Joel Murray also reached double figures as WT won its third straight game.
WT finished the game 33-of-71 (46.5%) from the floor, 14-of-40 (35.0%) from beyond the arc and 14-of-20 (70.0%) from the free throw line with 16 assists, 10 turnovers, five steals and two blocks.
STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
After making 26 three pointers in their first four games, WT has caught fire from beyond the arc making 41 in their past three victories. Gach Gach has been the main culprit going 8-of-21 from three. They made a season-high 15 in their 112-87 win over Adams State in Alamosa followed by 12 against Lubbock Christian and 14 against Science & Arts.
Staying on the top of shooting the three, WT's 226 three-pointer attempts are the most in the nation ahead of Lindenwood (198), William Jewell (195), St. Edward's (181) and Glenville State (181). Individually, Gach's 53 shots from beyond the arc are the fourth-most in Division II men's basketball.
Ryan Quaid enters the weekend nine rebounds short of breaking Reggie Ramsey's program record for career rebounds. The Fort Collins, Colo. native has 68 rebounds through seven games this season giving him 782 for his career.
Quaid leads the team in scoring at 14.4 points per game followed by a pair of freshman, Qua Grant and Joel Murray. After scoring four points in his collegiate debut, Grant scored in double figures in five straight games including a 23-point performance against ASU. Murray has been great since being inserted into the starting lineup where he has averaged 14.0 points per game in three starts.
A LOOK AT THE RANKINGS
West Texas A&M remained in the Top-10 in NABC and D2SIDA National Top-25 that were released on Tuesday afternoon. The 6-1 Buffs dropped four spots to eighth in the NABC rankings after their early season loss to Western State while they remained seventh in the D2SIDA Poll right behind Valdosta State.
A LOOK AT COLORADO STATE-PUEBLO
The ThunderWolves of Colorado State-Pueblo are 2-2 on the season after defeating Wayland Baptist 88-80 on Saturday. CSUP opened the season with a 90-83 victory over Arkansas-Fort Smith but lost the next two games to Rogers State and MSU Texas.
CSUP averages 76.0 points per game while shooting 45.5% from the floor, 36.9% from three-point range and 84.4% from the free throw line. Donovan Oldham has been the leading scorer through four games as the redshirt junior is averaging 20.3 points per contest. The Colorado Springs, Colo. native has scored 20 or more points twice this season including a season-high 31 points against WBU. The second leading scorer is freshman Cade Carrol who scores 13.0 points per game. In his first career start, the guard scored 19 points going a perfect 7-of-7 from the charity stripe.
The Thunderwolves have three players on the roster over 6'8" including redshirt junior Jason Anderson. Another player from Colorado Springs, Anderson recorded his first double-double of the season with 20 points, 11 rebounds in their win over UAFS. Harvey Barr and Jonathan Hall will also get minutes at the forward/center position.
Ralph Turner is in his eighth season as the ThunderWolves head coach compiling a record of 113-88 (.562). During his tenure, CSUP has finished over .500 in six of his first seven seasons including a 19-9 record in 2016-17. Before last season, they had qualified for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament in five straight seasons.
LAST TIME VS. COLORADO STATE-PUEBLO
West Texas A&M overcame a six-point halftime deficit to defeat CSU-Pueblo 91-80 on Nov. 18, 2017 in Pueblo, Colo. as part of the Al-Kaly Shrine Classic. Jordan Evans had a game-high 22 points making 7 of his 14 attempts from beyond the arc while Ryan Quaid scored 22 points going 10-of-14 from the floor while pulling down five rebounds. WT's all-time leading scorer, David Chavlovich, was held to 14 points but dished out eight assists as WT defeated the ThunderWolves in Pueblo for the first time since 2012.
INSIDE THE SERIES
West Texas A&M leads the all-time series 14-5 since their first meeting back on Dec. 20, 1965 in Pueblo, Colo. The Buffs are a perfect 10-0 at home against the ThunderWolves including 2-0 in games played on Thanksgiving weekend. With a win on Friday, WT would have a three-game winning streak in the series for the first time since winning six straight from 1995-2012.
WT HEAD COACH TOM BROWN
Fifth-year head coach Tom Brown won his 100th game at the helm of WT basketball in Saturday's 112-87 win over Adams State in Alamosa, Colo. It took him 136 to reach the plateau making him the fastest coach to eclipse the 100 win mark. The 2017-18 Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year has the fifth-best winning percentage in program history at 73.9%.
BUFFS ADD FIRST TWO PIECES TO 2019-20 RECRUITING CLASS
West Texas A&M inked two players during the early signing with head coach Tom Brown announcing the additions of Jake Gerber and Zach Toussaint to this year's recruiting class.
Gerber, a 6-foot-3 guard from Nazareth will be a four-year letterwinner at Nazareth High School where he has earned all-state honors three times. During his junior season, he led the Swifts to a runner-up finish at the UIL State Tournament while also being named the Amarillo Globe News 1A Player of the Year.
Toussaint, a 6-foot guard from Johnsburg, Ill., is an elite scorer as his 1,461 career points in two seasons are 100 points away from breaking the Johnsburg High School scoring record. During his junior season, he averaged 22.8 points per game while shooting 36.0% from three and 82.0% from the charity stripe.
