Lady Buffs Start Fast in an Exhibition Loss at Texas, 91-63

AUSTIN, Texas – The Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M came out firing as they trailed by just three at the end of the first quarter before falling to the Texas Longhorns on Sunday afternoon in exhibition action in front of over 1,000 fans at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas.

The Lady Buffs got on the board first as an illegal screen on UT's first possession led to a Tiana Parker turnaround jumper in the paint for the first points of the game, the Longhorns answered with a 9-0 run before Nathalie Linden knocked down a three from the top of the key to make it 9-5. Megan Gamble cut into the lead with a free throw before a UT long ball at 12-6 heading into the first media timeout of the game.
 
Linden knocked down a pair at the line after the break followed by a WT steal as Lexy Hightower hit from deep to cut the lead to 12-11, Texas scored the next four points before Hightower knocked down another long ball followed by a UT turnover that led to a Tyesha Taylor bucket down low at 16-16. Jatarie White hit two at the line followed by a Deleyah Harris bucket before a 3-0 Horns run ended by a Parker bucket, UT hit one-of-two at the line followed by an offensive board and bucket with a freebie before Mary Rose Foster capped off the first period with a bucket at 25-22.
 
Foster found Linden on a cut to the basket to start the second quarter before a Texas bucket before the Lady Buffs got into the bonus as Taylor hit two at the line to cut the lead to 27-26, the Horns went on a 5-0 run heading into a media timeout with 4:59 left and UT leading 32-26. Linden knocked down another long ball after the break before the Horns scored on three-straight possessions to make it 39-29, UT knocked down a pair at the line followed by misses on both ends before a Joanna Allen-Taylor long ball to make it 44-29 headed into the break.
 
The Lady Buffs went 10-of-27 (37%) from the floor in the opening half including 4-of-8 (50%) from deep and 5-of-11 (45.5%) from the charity stripe with 12 rebounds (three offensive, nine defensive), eight assists, seven turnovers, one block and one steal. Linden led the Lady Buffs at the break with 10 points followed by Hightower with six.
 
Texas went 16-of-31 (51.6%) from the field including 3-of-10 (30%) from behind the arc and 9-of-11 (81.8%) from the free throw line with 21 rebounds (five offensive, 16 defensive), six assists, nine turnovers, four blocks and one steal. The Longhorns were led at the break by Charli Collier with 13 points followed by Lashaun Higgs with 10.
 
Texas started off the second half on a 6-0 run to force a Lady Buff timeout with 7:16 on the clock, Texas A&M graduate transfer Danni Williams hit two at the line followed by a Taylor bucket from Hightower to snap WT's scoring drought. The teams traded points as Linden hit a pull-up baseline jumper that was answered by a Destiny Littleton long ball at 59-34.
 
The teams traded points at the line followed by a Joanne Allen-Taylor steal-and-score to extend the lead to 62-36, Reagan Haynes hit two at the charity stripe followed by a UT bucket before Foster answered with a layup of her own. Collier used her size inside again for another bucket followed by a Lady Buff turnover and foul as Audrey Warren hit two at the line at 68-40, the Horns finished the third on a 5-3 run to lead 73-43.
 
Hightower knocked down a long ball to start the fourth followed by a Higgs bucket, Parker hit a 20-footer from the wing followed by misses on both ends before a WT run to cut the lead to 75-52. Texas answered with a bucket before Harris finished in the paint followed by a foul to knock Parker from the contest with 5:23 left as UT hit both at the line at 79-54.
 
Braylyn Dollar saw her first action in Maroon & White after the break as the freshman hit one-of-two at the stripe before Williams connected on a long ball from the corner, Haynes finished in the paint followed by a Texas layup and a Taylor score to make it 84-59. Daria Cosgrove knocked down a three from the wing followed by the teams trading fouls to end the game, 91-63.
 
The Lady Buffs finished the game going 21-of-53 (39.6%) from the floor including 6-of-13 (46.2%) from deep and 15-of-29 (51.7%) from the charity stripe with 25 rebounds (eight offensive, 17 defensive), 13 assists, 15 turnovers, two blocks and three steals. Linden led the Lady Buffs with 14 points as the Colorado State transfer went 4-of-8 from the field and 2-of-2 from deep.
 
UT went 33-of-66 (50%) from the field including 7-of-20 (35%) from deep and 18-of-21 (85.7%) from the free throw line with 43 rebounds (14 offensive, 29 defensive), 14 assists, 17 turnovers, five block and seven steals. Collier led all players with 21 points as the freshman went 8-of-9 from the floor.

The Lady Buffs open up the 2018-19 regular season on November 9-10 as they host the South Central Region Challenge at the First United Bank Center with matchups against UC-Colorado Springs and Regis.
