Lady Buffs Face Familiar Foe in First Round of NCAA South Central Regional Friday Afternoon

CANYON, Texas – Fresh off its seventh Lone Star Conference women's soccer tournament championship, the West Texas A&M women's soccer team makes its tenth trip to the NCAA Tournament and opens with a familiar foe in Angelo State Friday at 3 p.m. CT at Mountain Lion Stadium on the campus of University of Colorado-Colorado Springs. 
 
The Lady Buffs are coming off a thrilling 1-0 victory over Angelo State in the LSC Championship match as sophomore Shanelle Arjoon scored the lone goal off an assist on a free kick from sophomore Marlene van Mourik in the 75th minute for the championship and the automatic bid to the NCAA South Central Regional.  WT junior goalkeeper Courtney DIppel had five saves in the match for her seventh shutout of the season as she improved to 9-6-5 on the year.
 
WT had five Lady Buffs named to the All-Tournament Team as sophomore Kahline Jacob was named Most Valuable Player with two goals and one assist for the championship.  Along with her, freshman Mackenzie Taylor, freshman Cheyenne Orozco, Dippel and junior Khadidra Debesette all were named to the team.
 
For the championship, WT scored six goals with four assist and 16 points, while recording 44 shots (.136) and 22 on goal and three game winners.  Second on the team in scoring was van Mourik with one goal and three assists, while Arjoon, redshirt freshman Hannah Kelley and Debesette each had goals.  Arjoon, Kelley and Jacob each had game winners. 
 
In goal, Dippel played all 278:29 minutes, allowing two goals (0.65 GAA), recording 10 saves (.833), two shutouts with a 3-0 record and faced 33 shots.   WT outshot the opposition 44-35 and 22-14 in shots on goal.
 
The Lady Buffs are 1-1-1 this season against Angelo State, going 1-0-1 in San Angelo and 0-1 in Canyon this season.  WT is 18-14-6 all-time against Angelo State, while WT head coach Chad Webb is 6-10-2 all-time against the Rambelles and is 74-65-17 overall in eight years at the helm of the Lady Buffs.
 
In the series with Angelo State this season, both teams have scored three goals and allowed three goals.  Kelley, Arjoon and senior Lucy Chalgren each have scores for the Lady Buffs, while van Mourik, freshman Noir Hawash and sophomore Samantha Silvestre each have assists as the Lady Buffs have nine points on the year.

The Lady Buffs have fired 41 shots (.073) with 20 on goal (.488) and one game winner, while ASU has three goals and two assists for eight points.  ASU has 45 shots (.067) with 25 on goal (.556), one game winner and converted one PK.  The Lady Buffs have 22 corner kicks (ASU with 12), while recording 22 saves (ASU with 17) and both teams have committed 20 fouls.
 
In goal, Dippel has logged all 290 minutes for a 0.93 goals against average with 19 saves (.864).  She has one shutout. 
 
ASU goalkeeper Sammy Cude has 15 saves (17 total saves) with one shutout and logged every minute with a 0.93 goals against average, while recording an .833 save percentage (.850 for the team).  Trenadey Scott leads the Rambelles with one goal and one assist in three games.  She has a team-high 12 shots against WT (.083) with eight on goal (.667).  Avery McNeme is second in scoring with two points on one goal on a PK tying the game at two in the first meeting in San Angelo on Sept. 29.  She has eight shots with six on goal.  Mackenzie Broderick also has one goal and the game winner in the 89th minute in Canyon on Oct. 15.  Megan Allen has the remaining assist for the Rambelles. 

If the Lady Buffs defeat Angelo State, they would face No. 2-seed UC-Colorado Springs for the second time this season as UCCS downed WT 2-1 on Sept. 11 in Colorado Springs.  The Lady Buffs jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a goal from van Mourik – her third in the first four games of the season in the 37th minute.  UCCS came right back with a goal just 57 seconds later from Bailee Jameson and Tara Patterson scored the game winner in the 66th minute. 
 
WT was outshot 16-6 and 6-1 in shots on goal in the contest as Dippel had four saves, while two goalkeepers for UCCS played in Grace Ramsden and Taylor Proctor.  Neither had a save in the game.  UCCS leads the all-time series with WT 2-1 and all three matches have been played in Colorado Springs.  WT won the first meeting on Sept. 30, 2008, with a 4-0 win, while UCCS won 4-1 on Sept. 2, 2012 and 2-1 this season.
 
The Lady Buffs are 2-9-1 all-time in the NCAA Tournament and are playing in their first NCAA postseason since 2012.  That year, WT won the Lone Star Conference regular season and tournament championship with a thrilling, 3-2 win in double overtime, against Incarnate Word in Canyon.  WT, also a No. 6-seed that season, faced No. 3-seed Metro State in the first round at St. Edward's University, where Metro State won 4-1.  Metro State scored the first three goals and WT got on the board in the 76th minute with an unassisted goal from Becky Peth, while the Roadrunners added the fourth goal in the 86th minute.  WT had seven shots with two on goal, while hitting the post a number of times in the match.
 
This season the Lady Buffs are led by van Mourik, who leads the team with 15 points on four goals and seven assists.  She ranks second in the LSC in assists and 45th nationally, while ranking 42nd nationally and second in the league in assists per game at 0.41.  She has a team-high 65 shots (.062) with 35 on goal (.538) and one game winner.  Freshman Noir Hawash is second in scoring with 13 points on a team-high five goals and three assists.  She has 29 shots (.172) with 15 on goal (.517) and is 1-1 in penalty kicks.  Jacob is third in scoring with 10 points on four goals and two assists.  She has 33 shots (.121) with 18 on frame (.545) and is tied for with freshman Jessica Diaz in game winners with two each. 
 
As a team, the Lady Buffs have scored 31 goals with 25 assists for 87 points.  The team has 297 shots (.104) with 145 on goal (.488) and is 2-2 in penalty kicks.  Conversely, the opposition has scored 25 goals with 25 assists for 75 points.  The opponents have 244 shots (.102) with 110 on goal (.451) and 1-2 in penalty kicks.  WT has 83 corner kicks, while allowing 72. 
 
In goal, Dippel has logged 1961:45 minutes ranking ninth nationally and second in the league.  She has played in 20 games with 20 starts, allowing 23 goals for a 1.11 goals against average ranking third in the LSC.  Dippel has 73 saves (.760) with a 9-6-5 record and seven shutouts with a combined shutout.  Freshman Syneca Pyszko has played in three games with one start for 140:45 minutes.  She played all 90 minutes in the Lady Buffs' 3-1 win at then-No. 16 Midwestern State in the regular season finale.  Pyszko has eight saves on the year and allowed two goals, while combining on a shutout. 
 
Prior to the semifinals of the 2017 Lone Star Conference Championship, the all-conference teams were announced as Orozco was the only Lady Buff to earn first team honors.  Hawash, Debesette and Dippel were second team honorees, while Diaz and Silvestre each were honorable mention selections.  Dippel and van Mourik also were named to the all-academic team.
 
Angelo State is making its fourth appearance in the NCAA Championship and is 1-3 all-time.  The Rambelles last played in the NCAA Tournament in 2015, falling at home to St. Edward's 1-0 in the second round after a bye in the first round.  In 2014, the Rambelles defeated Metro State in the first round 2-0, before losing to conference foe Texas A&M-Commerce in the second round.  ASU lost to Abilene Christian in 2010, 5-0 in the program's first trip to the tournament. 
 
This season, the Rambelles have been strong throughout, winning the conference regular season title with a 9-2-1 record and boast a 13-4-1 record overall.  The Rambelles have had six-straight seasons of 10 or more wins dating back to 2012. 
 
ASU leads the LSC in points per game (5.39), scoring offense (2.00), total goals (36) and total points (97), while ranking second in goals against average (0.983) and save percentage (.836).  The Rambelles are third in the league in total assists (25), saves per game (5.11) and assists per game (1.39). 
 
Individually, Scott is 21st nationally and first in the league in game winning goals (5), goals per game (20th, 0.83), points per game (24th, 1.89), total goals (18th, 15) and total points (25th, 34).  Cude is second in the LSC in goals against average at 0.996, while ranking sixth in the league in minutes with 1626:23.  She is second in the league in save percentage (.832) and third in saves per game (4.94), while ranking third in total saves with 89. 
 
UCCS is making its first trip to the NCAA Tournament this season and first with hosting duties.  The Mountain Lions won the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament, while going 10-2 in league play and 15-4 overall.  UCCS has won six-straight games entering the NCAA's, while not conceding a goal in the RMAC Tournament.
 
The Mountain Lions are in the top three in just about every team statistical category in the RMAC.  UCCS is first in save percentage at a .856 clip, while ranking third in assists per game (0.89), goals against average (34th nationally, 0.676), points per game (5.32), scoring offense (37th, 2.21), shutout percentage (43rd, 0.474), assists (17), total goals (34th, 42) and total points (53rd, 101). 
 
Individually, Tarah Patterson is 42nd nationally and second in the league in game-winning goals with four, while Taylor Proctor ranks 31st in goals against average and third in the league at a 0.642 clip.  She is 19th nationally and first in the league in save percentage at a .870 clip.  Patterson is fourth in the league in total goals with seven, while teammate Kelsey Lanham is fifth with six.  Patterson is third in points with 17 and Proctor is third in total saves with 67.
