Taylor-Caldwell Runs Fifth-Fastest 1,500 meters in School History

Meet Results / WT Results

Jamie Taylor-Caldwell ran the fifth-fastest 1,500 meter time in school history on Friday night at the Bryan Clay Invitational. He finished third in his heat running 3:49.26 becoming just the third Buff ever to run under 3:50.

"It was a great opportunity for these athletes to compete against some of the top talent in the nation this weekend," head coach Darren Flowers said. "I was proud of all three of the guys who ran in the 1,500 meters as they all ran personal bests. I think we learned a lot of things this weekend that will benefit us as the season progresses."

Taylor-Caldwell wasn't the only Buff to run well in the 1,500 meters as both Geoffrey Kipchumba and Alexander Korn ran personal bests in their respective heats. Kipchumba's time of 3:51.97 narrowly missed the freshman record set by Dylan Doss in 2012 while Korn's time of 3:54.39 is a three second personal best.

Nikolina Hrelec was the lone Lady Buff to compete this weekend as she ran in both the 800 and 1,500 meters. She ran a personal best time of 4:51.69 in the 1,500 meters after running 2:16.93 in the 800 earlier in the day.

Brandon Rivera finished 34th in the 800 meters running 1:53.03.

WT will return to action next Friday and Saturday, April 22-23, at the NMJC Ross Black Open in Hobbs, N.M.

Thursday Recap (April 14)
Geoffrey Kipchumba and Blake Whalen both ran top ten times in school history at the Bryan Clay Invitational on Thursday night. Kipchumba ran 9:07.26 in the 3,000 meter steeplechase which is  the fourth-fastest time in school history while Whalen's 14:56.10 is the eighth-fastest 5,000 meters.

"Geoffrey and Blake ran well in quality fields," head coach Darren Flowers said. "Geoffrey just missed the freshman record and isn't too far off the school record. He is only going to get faster as he gets more comfortable going over the steeples. Blake ran tough and we will look for him to do some big things at the conference meet in a few weeks."

Kipchumba impressed in his first 3,000 meter steeplechase running near the front for most of the race. He ended up fourth in a time of 9:07.26 which is the second-fastest time run by a freshman in school history. He provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships and his time would be the fourth-fastest time in the nation entering the weekend.

Whalen finished 18th in his heat running 14:56.10 which makes him the fifth Buff in school history to run under 15 minutes in the 5,000 meters. He joined Baptiste Moreu and Zach Daniel as the only runners to accomplish that feat since the program was reinstated.

Kipchumba and Jamie Taylor-Caldwell will run in the 1,500 meters joined by Brandon Rivera and Alexander Korn in the 800 meters. Nikolina Hrelec will also run in the 800 meters. The rest of the WT track & field team will not compete this weekend as the Red Raider Open was cancelled on Thursday afternoon.
