Lady Buffs Come Up Short Against Texas A&M-Commerce in LSC Title Match

SAN ANGELO, Texas  – The West Texas A&M women's soccer incredible run toward the Lone Star Conference title ended on Sunday afternoon in a 4-0 defeat to Texas A&M-Commerce in the championship match. The Lions used three first half goals including two goals within 44 seconds of each other to hand WT it first loss in five matches. The Lady Buffs will finish the 2015 season with an overall record of 10-10-1 and 4-5-1 in LSC play.
 
Karyn Forbes, Khadisha Debesette and Kaitlin Steele all earned All-Conference honors while TAMUC's Vicky Back was named the Most Valuable Player of the Tournament.
 
WT started the match strong with eight shots in the first 15 minutes including two shots on goal from Forbes and Alejandra Dockery.
 
Jade Bell opened the scoring in the 17th minute after getting her own rebound off a blocked shot and slotting the ball in the far post. The Lions doubled their advantage just 44 seconds later when Back's shot from 15 yards out found the back of the net. The Lions added a third right before halftime on a shot from 18 yards out from Savannah Grasser in the 41st minute.
 
The Lady Buffs nearly got a goal back at the start of the second half but Haley Girard's shot was wide and Forbes shot was blocked in the 51st minute. Forbes continued to pressure the defense forcing a save from Courtnie Northern in the 56th minute.
 
Sydney Hickerson came the closest to scoring a goal when her shot hit the crossbar in the 82 minute followed by another shot from Forbes. Grasser scored her second of the match on a breakaway in the 88th minute to give the Lions a 4-0 lead.
 
TURNING POINT
The Lions scored two goals within 44 seconds in the first 20 minutes to take a 2-0 lead.
 
 INDIVIDUAL LEADERS
- Karyn Forbes had a match-high eight shots, including four on goal. Haley Girard had a season-high five shots.
- Courtney Dippel made five saves facing 17 shots.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The two teams combined for 41 shots, 18 on goal.
- Forbes' eight shots is the sixth-most in school history. Dominique Premac last had eight shots for WT against UT-Permian Basin on Sept. 24, 2013.  
- The Lady Buffs were held scoreless for the first time in five matches even though they held a 24-17 advantage in shots.
 
NEWS & NOTES
- Courtney Dippel will finish the season with the third most saves in a singles season in school history, 94, and tenth-most shutouts in a single season, 4.
- Chad Webb falls to 1-2 in LSC Championship matches and 6-3 overall in tournament matches.
- In the loss, the Lady Buffs had their longest winning streak (4) of the season snapped.
