Lady Buff Game Notes

CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M women's soccer team still has a shot at qualifying for the Lone Star Conference tournament but to make that chance a reality, the Lady Buffs must first close out the season with two wins. Their final two LSC matchups to close out the regular season schedule will come against Texas A&M-Commerce and Texas Woman's at home this weekend. WT will first host TAMUC on Friday at 7 p.m. followed by TWU on Sunday, Senior Day, at 1 p.m.

A LOOK AT THE LONE STAR CONFERENCE: The Lady Buffs currently find themselves sitting last in the LSC standings with six points. Topping the list is Angelo State with 16 points, followed by Eastern New Mexico and TAMUC in a tie for second with 15 points each. Holding the fourth and final playoff spot at the moment is Midwestern State with 11 points while TWU sits in fifth with 10 points. For starters, in order for the Lady Buffs to qualify for the LSC Tournament, they must win both matches this weekend. Even with that, they will still need some help from other teams in the conference. With two wins, WT can also clinch as long as two other scenarios play out. First, ENMU must defeat or tie TWU on Friday. That match will begin at 3 p.m. and will be completed before the Lady Buffs' match with TAMUC. Finally, ASU must defeat MSU on Friday night, also a 7 p.m. matchup.

SENIOR DAY: The Lady Buffs will play their final home game of the season on Sunday at 1 p.m. against TWU. Before the matchup, both of WT's senior student-athletes, Jessie Thomas and Rhea Belgrave, will be honored as part of Senior Day at The Pitch.

Jessie Thomas
Thomas has enjoyed an excellent and very productive four-year career with the Lady Buffs as a midfielder and forward. She has started 41 matches and appeared in 74. For her career, Thomas has tallied 19 goals, including three game-winners, and two assists for 40 points. Her career honors include 2013 LSC All-Tournament Team, CoSIDA First-Team Academic All-District, Daktronics First-Team All-Region and she has also been named LSC Offensive Player of the Week once. Thomas will be graduating in the spring with a degree in Health Sciences.

Rhea Belgrave
Belgrave has anchored the Lady Buff backline for the past three seasons since transferring in from Concordia College (N.Y.) in 2012. She has played in 44 games for WT, making the start in 42 of them. She has tallied three goals, two of them game-winners, all of which came this season. Her career honors include 2012 LSC All-Conference Honorable Mention, 2013 LSC Defensive Player of the Year, 2013 LSC First-Team All-Conference, 2013 Daktronics Second-Team All-Region and 2014 LSC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. Belgrave also just returned from the CONCACAF Women's Championship where she, and teammate Karyn Forbes, led the Trinidad & Tobago National Team to a fourth place finish, giving the team another chance to qualify for the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup later this year.

TEXAS A&M COMMERCE AT A GLANCE: The Lions will come into Canyon on Friday night with a 11-5 overall record and 5-3 mark in LSC play. They are riding a three-game win streak and have been victorious in five of their last six. TAMUC has already clinched a spot in the LSC Tournament and has a chance to jump into the No. 1 seed and host spot with two wins this weekend.

Savannah Henderson has led the way offensively for the Lions and leads the LSC in both goals (12) and points (28). She has been named the LSC's Offensive Player of the Week twice so far this season. Jade Bell has also been dynamic with seven goals and seven assists for 21 total points. Courtnie Northern has seen the majority of time in goal for TAMUC, making 15 starts and playing nearly 1,400 minutes. She ranks second in the LSC with a .71 GAA and owns a .890 save percentage. Northern has tallied a conference-high 89 saves and has played six shutouts while only allowing 11 goals on the season. Like Henderson, Northern has also garnered Player of the Week honors twice on the defensive side.

The Lady Buffs are 19-10-2 all-time against the Lions. WT was victorious in the first meeting this season, grabbing a 1-0 win in Commerce on Sept. 28.

TEXAS WOMAN'S AT A GLANCE: With two games left in the season, the Pioneers also find themselves on the outside looking in as they sit in fifth in the LSC standings. They currently own a 9-6-1 mark overall and a 3-4-1 record in conference play. After starting off hot this fall; however, TWU has only managed to grab two wins in its previous seven games. Before coming to Canyon on Sunday to close out the regular season, the Pioneers will face ENMU in Portales, N.M. on Friday 3 p.m.

TWU had no problem scoring throughout the first half of the season as it has tallied 33 goals so far to its opponents' 11. Though in the previous seven games, the Pioneers have managed to find the net just five times. Leading the way has been Natalia Diaz with team-highs in goals (10), assists (6), and points (26). She has been named the LSC's Offensive Player of the Week twice so far this season. The Pioneers have also seen excellent play in goal by Ariana Morrison who has started all 16 games and owns a .70 GAA and a .861 save percentage while playing nearly 1,500 minutes.

The Lady Buffs are 11-3-2 all-time against TWU. WT won both meetings last season; however, dropped the first matchup earlier this fall, 2-1, in Denton.

MIDWESTERN STATE REVISITED: WT dropped a close 2-1 contest to rival MSU on Friday night in Wichita Falls, Texas. After trailing 2-0 in the second half, senior Jessie Thomas grabbed a goal to cut the lead to one with nearly 25 minutes remaining but the Lady Buffs would be unable to find the equalizer. With the loss, WT fell to 6-9 and 2-5 in LSC play while the Mustangs improved to 8-3-5 (3-3-2, LSC).

WT held the advantage in shots on the night despite the loss, 14-11, while 11 of those attempts came in the second half. The Lady Buffs would only be able to place five of those attempts on target; however, compared to seven by MSU. Sophomore Nicole Kemper took the loss in goal and fell to 3-4 on the year after making five saves and allowing two goals. Courtney Burnette received the win with four stops and one goal allowed.

MSU would grab the lead in the 60th minute as Callie Briseno found a rebound off of Morgan Hannon's previous shot to give the Mustangs the 1-0 lead. It would be Briseno's third score of the season. Then in the 66th minute, Williamson extended the home team's advantage to 2-0 with her eighth goal of the season on a double assist by Ashley Cottrell and Haley Britton.

Just over a minute later, Thomas tallied her fourth goal of the season to cut the Mustangs' lead to back to one in the 67th minute. But the Lady Buffs' late surge would not be enough as WT fell to MSU by a final score of 2-1.

With the loss, the Lady Buffs fell to 16-18-2 all-time against the Mustangs.

ANGELO STATE REVISITED: The Lady Buffs suffered a familiar blow to the Rambelles of ASU on Sunday afternoon in San Angelo, Texas. ASU swept the season series with a 3-0 shutout victory over WT where like the first meeting, the Rambelles were led with two goals off the feet of Sierra Anderson. With the loss, WT fells to 6-10 overall and 2-6 in LSC play. ASU improved to 12-3-1 (5-3-1, LSC).

ASU held a strong advantage in shots on the day, 19-5, after a huge second-half surge. The Rambelles also lead in shots on target, 9-2. Kemper took the loss and fells to 3-5 on the year after making six saves and allowing three goals. Receiving the win for ASU was Shantel Wittke who grabbed the shutout and made two stops.

The Rambelles stepped on the gas right out of the break in the second half with a couple of quick shots-on-goal. Soon after, they would take the lead as Anderson scored her third goal against WT this season to make the score 1-0 in favor of ASU in the 52nd minute. She took the strike into the low corner to beat Kemper and was assisted by Cynthia Andrews.

The home team continued to pressure as they kept Kemper on her toes over the next 25 minutes and not allowing the Lady Buff offense to find any rhythm. Anderson then found the net again with her 10th goal of the season in the 88th minute.

The Rambelles would grab one final goal in the final minute of the match with a penalty kick goal by Elizabeth Rodriguez.

With the loss, the Lady Buffs are now 15-10-5 all-time against the Rambelles and have dropped both meetings this season.
