A LOOK AT THE LONE STAR CONFERENCE: The Lady Buffs climbed back into that fourth and final playoff position in the LSC standings after splitting two contests last weekend, dropping its first game to then-No.8 Angelo State and grabbing a thrilling victory over Midwestern State. WT sits in fourth currently with six points (2-3). Leading the league still is ASU with 10 points and a 3-1-1 LSC record followed by Texas A&M-Commerce (3-2) and ENMU (3-2) tied for second with nine points each. On the outside looking in are MSU in fifth with five points (1-2-2) and Texas Woman's in sixth with four points (1-3-1).

LADY BUFFS IN 2015 WORLD CUP QUALIFYING ACTION: Wednesday night marked the beginning of the CONCACAF Women's Championship, the final round of 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup Qualifying. Starting off the action in Group A was Trinidad & Tobago, the CFU Caribbean Cup Champion, a team which features two athletes from the West Texas A&M women's soccer squad, senior defender Rhea Belgrave and sophomore midfielder Karyn Forbes.

T&T, commonly referred to as the Soca Princesses, has a tough draw for the opening match as it took on the top-ranked team in the world, the United States of America yesterday. T&T shocked the world as it dropped a 1-0 decision to the USA, frustrating the Americans who could only score once on 29 total shots.

Belgrave had an excellent performance in her defense against the high-powered USA offense. She got the starting nod and playing the entire match, making some very key clearances defensive stands to keep her team in the match. Forbes, originally thought to be scratched from the lineup after dealing with a nagging lower body injury, was subbed in late in the second frame and played the final eight minutes of the match.

The CONCACAF Championship is the final round of qualifying ahead of the 2015 World Cup in Canada. CONCACAF will be held Oct. 15-26 across four U.S. cities. Aside from the Caribbean qualifiers (T&T, Haiti, Jamaica & Martinique), competitors at CONCACAF will include USA, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Guatemala.  The two finalists and winner of the match for third place will advance automatically to the World Cup, while the side finishing fourth will go into a play-off against a team from CONMEBOL for the chance to join the top trio at the 2015 World Cup in Canada.

The Soca Princesses still have a great chance to advance through the tournament, even with the loss against the USA, if it gets one of the top two spots from Group A, which also features Haiti and Guatemala. T&T will face off with Haiti on Friday, Oct. 17 at 5:30 p.m. (CT) at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Ill. The team will then close out group play on Monday, Oct. 20, at 4 p.m. in a matchup with Guatemala at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. Both of T&T's remaining group matches can be seen on Fox Sports 2.

Group B consists of Costa Rica, Jamaica, Martinique and Mexico. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals which will take place in Philadelphia, Pa. on Friday, Oct. 24, followed by the championship and third-place matches on Sunday, Oct. 26. The Soca Princesses are looking for their first ever appearance in the FIFA Women's World Cup.

EASTERN NEW MEXICO AT A GLANCE: The Zias will welcome WT on Friday with a 6-5 overall record and 3-2 LSC mark while they have won three of their previous four matches. Most recently, ENMU is coming off a 2-0 upset over ASU, which would be the Rambelles first loss of the season in 12 games.

ENMU has been led offensively by Alyssa Prince who leads the team with five goals. Three other Zias have also recorded multiple goals. Fabienne Wilson has seen the majority of time between the pipes for ENMU and holds a 4-2 record in six starts and 549 minutes of action. She boasts a 1.47 GAA and .743 save percentage with 26 total saves and two shutouts.

WT is 10-5-1 all-time against the Zias. Last season the Lady Buffs dropped the first game in Portales, 4-1, before playing to a scoreless draw in Canyon. The Lady Buffs also lost the first meeting this season, a 1-0 defeat at home two weeks ago.

ANGELO STATE REVISITED: WT fell to eighth-ranked Angelo State, 2-0, on Friday night in Canyon in what was a very competitive and tightly contested matchup. The Rambelles would grab a one-goal lead just before the midway point while tapping in an insurance goal with five minutes left in the match, both off the feet of Sierra Anderson, to stay undefeated on the season and improve to 10-0-1 overall (3-0-1, LSC). With the loss, the Lady Buffs fell to 5-7 and 1-3 in conference play.

Both teams finished off the night knotted at eight shots apiece. Two for WT came from junior Emily Krenek while six other Lady Buffs tallied one each. Sophomore keeper Nicole Kemper suffered the loss and fell to 2-2 on the year while ASU's Shantel Wittke improved to 8-0-1 after receiving the win.

ASU took advantage on a counter attack in the 39th minute to grab a first half lead. Anderson received a cross in the center of the box from Haley Mendel with no defenders in front and lifted a shot over the reach of Kemper into the top left corner of the net. It would be Anderson's sixth goal of the season.

Both junior Dominique Premac and sophomore Ashlee Craig would put up great looks towards the goal late in the second frame but Anderson sealed the win for ASU with her second goal in the 86th minute.

The Lady Buffs found themselves playing Friday without two key starters in senior Belgrave and Forbes who departed Thursday to rejoin the Trinidad & Tobago national team in preparation for the final round of World Cup Qualifying.

MIDWESTERN STATE REVISITED: Freshman Lucy Chalgren scored the game-winning goal with just over a minute left in regulation to carry WT to a crucial LSC home win over MSU on Sunday afternoon at The Pitch. With the win, the Lady Buffs improved to 6-7 overall and 2-3 in LSC play while the Mustangs fall to 6-2-5 (1-2-2).

WT held a slight edge in shots on the day, 10-9, though MSU would hold the advantage in shots placed on target with six to the Lady Buffs' five. Kemper grabbed the win and improved to 3-2 after making five saves and allowing one goal. Courtney Burnette of MSU fell to 6-2-5 on the year.

WT would manage to score off its first shot of the game as it received a break in the 18th minute. Senior Jessie Thomas found some open space at the top of the 18-yard box and sent a missile into the upper top left corner of the net over the reach of Burnette to give WT the early 1-0 advantage. It would be Thomas's third score of the season.

It did not take long for the Mustangs to find the tying score as Destinee Williamson found the net at the 22:41 mark. She broke free through the defense near the top of the box and lifted a ball over Kemper's jump into the top right of the goal for her team-leading seventh goal of the season.

As the clock was winding down in the second half, it looked very likely the game would be heading into extra time, something the Lady Buffs were all too familiar with last season. But late in the 89th minute, the Lady Buffs attacked to put themselves in position to end the game and took advantage of the opportunity. Chalgren received a deflection on the close left wing and sent a high kick into the bottom of the crossbar which split through a cluster of players from both sides, landing just inside the goal line for the score.

With the win, the Lady Buffs improved to 16-17-2 all-time against the Mustangs. WT now also goes up by a score of 4-1 in the second-annual Highway 287 Challenge Cup against MSU. WT received wins on Saturday in football (2 points) and volleyball (1 point) while the Mustangs grabbed a point with a double overtime win over the Buffs in men's soccer.
