The West Texas A&M University women's soccer team defeated the University of Central Oklahoma Friday in a convincing 2-0 victory. With the win, WTAMU avenged last year's 1-0 overtime loss to the Bronchos in the Lone Star Conference Finals.
It was the Lady Buffs' sixth-straight shutout, and WTAMU is now unbeaten in its last eight matches, recording four-consecutive wins. The Lady Buffs have outscored the opposition 24-2 during those eight matches.
In the final regular-season, home finale match, and a night dedicated to honoring the accomplishments of the five 2003 seniors, the Lady Buffs came out fighting for their spot in the LSC standings.
WTAMU got on the board in the 24th minute when senior midfielder Ashleigh Scott netted the first goal of the game. Senior defender Kellie Garrett worked the ball up the left side of the field, fired the ball across the face of the net before Scott got a foot on it and put the ball in the back of the net.
The score stood 1-0 for the reminder of the first half, while the Lady Buffs continued their physical play accumulating 11 fouls to UCO's three. The WTAMU dominance didn't end there.
Although the Lady Buffs controlled most the play, they didn't find the net again until freshman forward Sarit Shenar scored her 15th goal of the season off a quick give-and-go from sophomore forward Whitney Cates in the 72nd minute.
With Shenar's 15th goal, she moves within two goals of tying former Lady Buff Courtney Massie's school record of 17-goal season in 1998.
The Lady Buffs outshot the Bronchos 23-12 with 14 on goal. In a match-up of traditional rivals, WTAMU proved more physical as it was called for 21 fouls to UCO's nine.
The loss was the Bronchos their second straight conference loss bring their season record to 14-3-2, 6-2-0 in the LSC.
The Lady Buffs finish the regular season with a overall record of 11-3-2, 6-1-2 in conference action. WTAMU will now wait for the other LSC teams to complete their seasons before final standing and seedings are determined for the conference tournament, which will be held in Wichita Falls, Texas on Nov. 7-9.
