CANYON, Texas – The #3 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M hit the road for Lone Star Conference action on Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader against the UT Dallas Comets. It will mark the first ever meeting on the diamond between the Lady Buffs and Comets. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at the UTD Softball Complex in Richardson, Texas.
 
THIS IS LADY BUFF SOFTBALL
West Texas A&M Softball is in their 21st season of NCAA competition as the Lady Buffs are a staggering 796-328 (.708) since reviving the program prior to the 2006 campaign. WT has won three South Central Regional Championships (2014, 2016, 2021) along with a pair of NCAA Division II National Championships in 2014 and 2021.
 
2025 REWIND
The Lady Buffs capped off 2025 with a 56-8 overall record and 40-4 Lone Star Conference record. WT opened the campaign ranked 13th before quickly entering the top 10 of the NFCA poll. The Lady Buffs spent 10 weeks in the top five including three weeks at No. 1. WT earned a share of the Lone Star Conference regular season title for the second consecutive season.
 
WT HEAD COACH MICHAEL MOOK
In just six seasons, Michael Mook has led West Texas A&M to a 257-64 (.801) mark while claiming the 2021 NCAA Division II National Championship. Mook is a two-time Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year (2024, 2025) who has led the Lady Buffs to four NCAA Postseason appearances (2021, 2023, 2024, 2025). Mook recently agreed to a three-year contract extension to keep him the WT dugout until atleast the Summer of 2028. A new era of Lady Buff softball began on June 20, 2019, as Mook was hired as the third head coach in program history.
 
SCOUTING THE COMETS
UT Dallas enters the weekend with an overall record of 5-5 including a 3-3 mark in Lone Star Conference play. The Comets are 1-1 this season at the UTD Softball Complex as they split a doubleheader with the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds on Friday. The Comets dropped the opening game of the doubleheader to ENMU 9-6 before responding in the nightcap with a walkoff 8-7 victory.
 
Avery Martin leads the way offensively as the senior catcher from Billings, Montana is hitting .394 on the season with two doubles and two triples to hold the team lead with nine RBI for a slugging percentage of .576 to go along with two walks and three strikeouts for an on-base clip of .419. UTD is hitting .344 as a team with 17 doubles, two triples and five homers for 63 RBI while also going 14-of-20 on stolen bases.
 
Mere Cavazos has been the ace of the pitching staff to start the season, going 0-3 with a 3.00 ERA as the freshman from Corpus Christi, Texas has allowed 12 runs (eight earned) on 22 hits with six walks and 12 strikeouts in her 18.2 innings of work for an opposing batting average of .301. The Comets have a 5.47 staff ERA, allowing 73 runs (50 earned) on 88 hits with 49 walks and 47 strikeouts in 64.0 frames with opposing batters hitting .331.
 
UTD HEAD COACH CASEY DICKSON
Casey Dickson was named the head softball coach for UT Dallas in October 2024. In her first season, the Comets went 17-18 while transitioning to NCAA Division II. The team broke the school records for most batters hit by a pitch and walks in a season. 
 
Dickson joined the Comets after a five-year stint as the pitching coach for Towson University in Maryland. She helped the Tigers reach the Coastal Athletic Association Tournament finals in 2023.
 
Dickson was a four-year softball letterwinner at the University of Oklahoma as a first baseman. She set single-season school records for home runs (17) and runs batted in (61) during her senior season. She was the first Oklahoma player to receive All-Midwest Region honors three times (1995-97), the three-time all-conference selection led the Sooners to four straight NCAA Tournaments.
 
THE SERIES
Sunday afternoon marks the first ever meeting on the diamond between West Texas A&M and UT Dallas.
 
LONE STAR CONFERENCE NEWS & NOTES (FEB. 24)
Lone Star Conference softball league play is in full swing as all 17 teams have played at least two conference doubleheaders.
 
No. 8 Angelo State (15-4 overall) is the only team unbeaten in league play at 4-0. No. 3 West Texas A&M (15-3 overall), No. 13 Oklahoma Christian (13-3 overall) and UT Tyler (13-5 overall) are all 5-1 in LSC play.
 
This week will feature 26 conference games between Friday (Feb. 27), Saturday (Feb. 28) and Sunday (March 1).
 
WT leads the league in hitting (.377) and fielding (.986), while ASU is tops in pitching (.243).
 
The WT duo of senior infielder Jordyn De Los Santos and freshman left-handed pitcher/designated hitter Brooke Janning swept the first National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II Louisville Slugger Player of the Week and Wilson Pitcher of the Week awards of the season, respectively.
