CANYON, Texas – The #7 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M close out their weekend homestand on Saturday afternoon as they welcome the St. Mary's Rattlers to the First United Bank Center for Lone Star Conference action beginning at 1:00 p.m.
 
ST. EDWARD'S REWIND
West Texas A&M continued to roll on Thursday night as they grabbed 50 rebounds on the way to a 77-46 Lone Star Conference victory over the St. Edward's Hilltoppers at the First United Bank Center. Henley West led the Lady Buffs with 11 points and three blocks, contributing significantly on both ends. Taylor Haggan added 11 points and recorded one block, providing a steady presence in the paint. Karley Motschenbacher scored eight points and tallied three steals, showcasing her defensive capabilities. Claire Graham collected seven rebounds, anchoring the team on the boards.
 
SCOUTING THE RATTLERS
St. Mary's enters Saturday with an overall record of 8-3 with a 4-2 mark in Lone Star Conference action. The Rattlers are 2-2 on the road so far this season with wins coming at South Dakota Mines and Black Hills State while dropping road contests to Texas Woman's and Eastern New Mexico.
 
Thursday night saw the Rattlers commit 17 turnovers in a 65-58 loss at Eastern New Mexico. St. Mary's shot 47.9% (23-of-48) from the floor including 30.8% (4-of-13) from deep with 26 rebounds, the Greyhounds dominated in the paint with 38 of their 65 points coming down low. Christin Callens and Quezia Bertoni led the Rattlers with 12 points each.
 
Callens leads the way offensively for the Rattlers as the sophomore guard from Houston has gone 57-of-122 (46.7%) from the field including 3-of-14 (21.4%) from behind the arc and 33-of-38 (86.8%) from the charity stripe to average 12.5 points per game to go along with 67 rebounds, 12 assists, five steals and a pair of blocks. The Klein Collins High School product has scored in double-figures in each of the last 11 contests for the Rattlers with her season-high of 16 points coming twice against Texas Woman's and Lubbock Christian.
 
StMU HEAD COACH VALERIE HUIZAR
Valerie Huizar is in her fourth season at the helm of the St. Mary's women's basketball program after being named the ninth head coach in program history back in June of 2022. The San Antonio native joined StMU from the University of Louisiana-Lafayette where she served as the associate head coach and recruiting coordinator since 2017.
 
THE SERIES
Saturday marks the 14th all-time meeting on the hardwood between the Lady Buffs and the Rattlers as WT holds the 11-2 advantage in a series that dates back to 2002. The Rattlers are 1-6 all-time at th First United Bank Center as they picked up their first win in Canyon on February 20, 2025.
 
The last meeting saw the Rattlers have three players score in double-figures led by Raynne Malik in a 65-57 win over the Lady Buffs in Canyon. Kyla Kane and Taylor Haggan led the way for the Lady Buffs with 14 points each. WT committed 15 turnovers which led to 17 St. Mary's points.
 
WT HEAD COACH JOSH PROCK
Josh Prock is now in his fifth season at the helm of the Lady Buff Basketball program. The Lady Buffs made the program's 29th appearance in the NCAA Division II Postseason during the 2024-25 campaign as they went 19-13 overall with a 12-10 mark in the LSC. The Lady Buffs advanced to the South Central Regional Semifinals.
 
Prock reached the 300 career victory milestone on Thursday, December 4th in a 76-51 victory over Oklahoma Christian at the First United Bank Center in Canyon. Prock was introduced as West Texas A&M's head women's basketball coach on June, 2, 2021. Prock is no stranger to the Lone Star Conference as he spent eight seasons as the head coach at Eastern New Mexico leading the Greyhounds to their only three NCAA Tournament appearances in program history.
 
HOME SWEET HOME
West Texas A&M is home to one of the finest multi-purpose facilities in the country as the First United Bank Center has served as the home of the Lady Buffs since January 26, 2002. The Lady Buffs are a staggering 294-47 inside of the FUBC during that time for a winning clip of 86.6%. WT has averaged 1,035 fans per contest since the facility opened its doors with the largest crowd coming on Opening Night with 4,941 members of Buff Nation seeing the Lady Buffs take on rival Abilene Christian.
 
LSC PRESEASON PLAYER OF THE YEAR
West Texas A&M senior guard Kyla Kane was tabbed the Lone Star Conference Preseason Player of the Year announced on Monday, October 20th. The 5-foot-10 native of Wellington, Texas, averaged 13.1 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game. She shot 89.8 percent from the free throw line and made 56 3-pointers.
 
LSC PRESEASON POLL
The Lady Buffs were selected fourth in the 2025 LSC Preseason Coaches' Poll. Defending Regional Champion Texas Woman's claimed 20 of the possible 51 first place votes to sit atop of the poll with 810 points followed by Lubbock Christian (14 first place, 776), UT Tyler (eight first place, 761), West Texas A&M (six first place, 663) and Eastern New Mexico (two first place, 657) to round out the top five. Angelo State (656) sits sixth followed by Texas A&M-Kingsville (564), UT Permian Basin (466), Midwestern State (461), St. Mary's (438), St. Edward's (363), Oklahoma Christian (310), Cameron (262), Texas A&M International (one first place, 210), UT Dallas (168), Western New Mexico (161) and Sul Ross State (77).
 
WBCA DIVISION II TOP-25 POLL
The Lady Buffs jumped up to 7th in the newest edition of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) DIvision II Top-25 Poll announced on Tuesday.
 
The South Central Region is represented by Texas Woman's (3rd), WT (7th), Colorado Mesa (10th), Lubbock Christian (12th) and St. Mary's (RV).
 
LIVE COVERAGE
The contest will be broadcasted on FloCollege. The LSC and FloSports reached a historic agreement in August for the largest streaming rights deal in NCAA Division II history.
