WT Closes the Regular Season in Canyon Against the Javelinas

CANYON, Texas – The Buffaloes of West Texas A&M close out the regular season inside the friendly confines of Wilder Park this weekend as they host the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas in a four-game Lone Star Conference series beginning on Friday afternoon with a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday will see single nine-inning games starting at 1:00 p.m. with WT honoring their senior class on Sunday afternoon.
 
A LOOK AT THE JAVELINAS
Texas A&M-Kingsville enters the weekend with an overall record of 26-20 with a 25-19 mark in Lone Star Conference action to sit seventh in the league standings. The Javelinas picked up a big series win over #21 St. Edward's last weekend in Kingsville as they won games one, three and four by a combined score of 38-18 at Nolan Ryan Field.
 
Vincent Sanchez is hitting .318 for the Javelinas as the senior infielder from Houston has scored 31 runs with 48 hits including 13 doubles, one triple and one homer to drive in a team-leading 29 RBI to go along with 29 walks and 18 strikeouts. TAMUK is hitting .289 as a team so far this season with 288 runs scored on 394 hits including 79 doubles, 11 triples and 10 long balls to drive in 241 RBI while also stealing 81 bases on 106 attempts.
 
Potential game three starter Ulises Quiroga is 6-2 on the season with a 4.84 ERA as the righty from Baytown, Texas has allowed 34 runs (31 earned) on 54 hits with 20 walks and 61 strikeouts in his 57.2 innings of work for an opposing batting average of .242. The Javelinas have a 5.11 staff ERA as they have allowed 284 runs (206 earned) on 400 hits with 193 walks and 326 strikeouts in 363.0 frames.
 
JAVELINAS IN 2024
Texas A&M-Kingsville finished the 2024 campaign with an overall record of 23-27 with a 21-27 mark inside of Lone Star Conference action to miss out on the LSC Championships.
 
TAMUK HEAD COACH JASON GONZALES
Jason Gonzales is now in his 17th season at the helm of the TAMUK baseball program as he was named the school's third skipper on August 1, 2008. The two-time LSC Coach of the Year has led the Javelinas to an overall record of 491-352 during his time in Kingsville with one LSC Tournament Championship (2013) and six NCAA postseason trips including a run to the NCAA Division II College World Series in 2018.
 
SERIES HISTORY
The Javelinas lead the all-time series against the Buffaloes, 86-70 in a rivalry that dates back to 1994. The Buffs are 26-40 all-time against TAMUK in the Texas Panhandle including 20-12 at Wilder Park since the facility was opened in 2011. Last season's series saw the Buffs win three-of-four games at Nolan Ryan Field in Kingsville.
 
WT HEAD COACH CORY HALL
West Texas A&M didn't have to look far to find the new head coach for Buffalo Baseball as longtime Associate Head Coach Cory Hall was promoted to the skipper of the Buffs announced on June 28th. Hall has spent 14 seasons as the top assistant and pitching coach for the Buffs, having four different pitchers (Austin Moore, Josh Payne, Marshall Kasowski, Joe Corbett) drafted in the Major League Baseball Draft during his time in Canyon with multiple other professional players learning under one of the top pitching minds in collegiate baseball.
 
WT COACHING STAFF
Shawn Neale was named WT's Recruiting Coordinator in 2022 as the Toronto native returns for his ninth season in Canyon, the Buffs ranked 13th nationally in batting average (.334) last season while sitting 16th in hits (623) and 24th in on-base percentage (.432). 
 
WT alumni Cooper Harris returns to Canyon as the new pitching coach for the Buffs following two seasons at LSC foe Cameron. Nollan Koon enters his first season in the dugout for the Buffaloes as a graduate assistant coach in December of 2024. Koon returns to the Texas Panhandle following time as a hitting coach at Northeastern State.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
The Buffs rank 14th in the nation in team batting average (.337) while sitting 18th in hits (490), 21st in doubles (98), 16th in on-base percentage (.443), 14th in runs (412), 15th in slugging percentage (.556) and 8th in triples (21). Defensively the Buffs are 26th nationally in fielding percentage (.973). Tai Phetluangsy's eight saves on the season ranks the senior 10th in the nation.
 
REGIONALLY SPEAKING
The Buffaloes were included in the initial NCAA Division II Baseball South Central Regional Rankings announced on Wednesday afternoon by the NCAA headquarters in Indianapolis, Indiana. The top six teams in the South Central Region will advance to the NCAA Postseason with the winners of the LSC and RMAC Tournaments receiving an automatic berth followed by four at-large selections.
 
THIS IS LSC BASEBALL
Throughout the year, all 13 LSC teams will play a single round-robin schedule with a four-game weekend series against each league opponent. 
 
The LSC Baseball Championship will feature a two-week tournament comprised of the top seven teams. The opening round is best-of-three series and will be held May 2-4 at the sites of the No. 2 (vs. No. 7), 3 (vs. 6) and 4 (vs. 5) seeds. The league's top seed from the regular season will receive an opening-round bye and host the double-elimination championship round on May 8-10.
 
AROUND THE LSC
The final week of the Lone Star Conference baseball regular season is here, and there is just a one-game difference in the race for the regular season title.
 
Angelo State (39-7 overall, 37-7 LSC) is just ahead of UT Tyler (37-9, 36-8 LSC) after both teams recorded a sweep last weekend. ASU has prevailed in nine straight games and UT Tyler has won 10 in a row. ASU travels to Cameron this week, while UT Tyler hosts St. Mary's. ASU and UT Tyler split their series back in February.
 
The league's top seed will receive a first-round bye in the LSC Baseball Championship and will host the double-elimination championship round on May 8-10. The opening round will be best-of-three series on May 2-4 at the sites of the No. 2 (vs. No. 7), 3 (vs. 6) and 4 (vs. 5) seeds. The LSC tournament champion will receive the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Championship.
 
St. Edward's (31-17 LSC) is currently in third place, followed by Lubbock Christian (28-16), St. Mary's (26-18), West Texas A&M (26-18), Texas A&M-Kingsville (25-19) and Eastern New Mexico (24-20).
 
ASU is leading the conference in hitting (.382) and fielding (.976), and UT Tyler is tops in pitching (3.88 ERA). LCU has hit a league-high 78 home run, led by Brevin McCool's 28. In addition to homers, McCool is leading the LSC in RBI (77), slugging percentage (1.034) and OPS (1.572). UT Tyler's Drew Schmidt owns the league's top batting average at .455 and is tied for the most triples (five) with ENMU's Kyle Kiernan and TAMUK's Maurice Martinez.
 
UT Tyler's Kyle Froehlich (7-0), LCU's Ryan Markwardt (7-1) and ASU's Dax Dathe (7-3) are tied for the league lead in wins on the mound. SEU's Kobe Jaramillo has the best ERA (2.87) and most strikeouts (78). SEU's Parker Tennill has 10 saves to lead the conference.
