CANYON, Texas – The Lady Buffs continue Lone Star Conference this week as they hit to road to Silver City, New Mexico and Alpine, Texas. WT battles Western New Mexico on Thursday night followed by a Saturday matchup with Sul Ross State.

WESTERN NEW MEXICO
The Mustangs enter the week with an overall record of 8-9 with a 3-4 mark in Lone Star Conference action. WNMU is riding a two-game losing streak as they fell on the road at Dallas Baptist (3-1) and Texas Woman's (3-0) last week.Â

Geno Frugoli is in his second season at the helm of the Western New Mexico volleyball program, he came to Silver City following three seasons as the head coach at Seward County CC where he led the Lady Saints to the NJCAA Region VI Championship in 2023.

Daphne Posthumus leads the way offensively for the Mustangs as the freshman from Lelystad, Netherlands has registered 157 kills on 375 swings with 38 errors for an attack percentage of .323 to go along with five assists, 39 digs and 73 total blocks (30 solo) for 208.5 total points to average 3.11 per set.

A LOOK AT THE SERIES
The Lady Buffs and Mustangs will take the court on Thursday for the 24th time as WT holds a 20-3 advantage in the series that dates back to 1981. The Lady Buffs have won nine straight against the Mustangs, WT is 7-2 all-time at Drag's Court with their last trip coming in 2024.

SUL ROSS STATE
The Lobos enter the week with an overall mark of 2-11 with a 0-7 mark in Lone Star Conference action. Sul Ross State has dropped their last 11 contests including road sweeps at Texas Woman's and Dallas Baptist last week.

After one season of being an assistant volleyball coach, Annika Canaba was promoted to the head volleyball coach at Sul Ross State on July 12, 2024. The Alpine, Texas native wrapped up a historic five-year career as a two-sport standout at Sul Ross State in 2022 where she recorded 1,315 career kills, the all-time best mark in the program's history.

Samantha Senek and Cassandra Espinoza lead the way offensively for the Lobos with 69 kills each, Senak has registered at attack percentage of .243 while Espinoza has 11 aces and 87 digs. Senak leads the team with 21 total blocks to average 0.50 per set.

A LOOK AT THE SERIES
Saturday afternoon will mark the 12th all-time meeting on the court between the Lady Buffs and Lobos. Last season was the first between the two teams in 41 years (October 7, 1983). The Lady Buffs are 3-0 all-time in Alpine with their last trip coming on September 17, 1983.Â

LSC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Taytum Stow was tabbed the LSC Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday afternoon. The Hereford, Texas product registered 19 kills on 38 swings with just two errors to hit .447 on the week with 14 total blocks (eight solo) to tally 31.0 points in the two wins. The senior middle had a career-best 16 kills on Tuesday night with an attack percentage of .483 to go along with six blocks followed by three kills and eight blocks against ENMU on Saturday afternoon.

LSC PRESEASON DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Senior middle blocker
Taytum Stow was named the 2025 Lone Star Conference Preseason Defensive Player of the Year announced on Monday, August 25th. The Hereford product ed the league with 138 blocks (1.27 per set) on her way to a second LSC Defensive Player of the Year Award (also 2022). Stow was also third in the LSC with a .364 hitting percentage and earned honorable mention All-American status.

THE GAMBLE ERA
Three-time National Champion and NJCAA Hall of Famer
Terry Gamble was named the 17th head coach in Lady Buff Volleyball history on February 4, 2025. Gamble has compiled a record of 1,107-349 (.759) as he was just the third head coach in NJCAA history to reach 1,000 career wins on October 15, 2024.

Gamble came to Canyon following seven seasons at Blinn College in Brenham, Texas. Gamble was named the Regional Coach of the Year for the third time, leading Blinn College to their fifth straight NJCAA National Tournament. He was inducted into the NJCAA Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2007 after winning three NJCAA volleyball championships (2000, 2004, 2006) and three NJCAA Coach of the Year awards.

LADY BUFFS IN THE AVCA POLL
The Lady Buffs sit 13th in the newest edition of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division II Top-25 Poll announced on Monday afternoon. It marks the 323rd time since 1986 that the Lady Buffs appear in the poll, the sixth most in Division II history. WT has sat atop of the poll 28 different times including twice during the 2023 campaign.
