CANYON, Texas – The #14 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M ran their win streak to four matches on Wednesday night to claim a Lone Star Conference victory over the Midwestern State Mustangs (25-15, 25-13, 21-25, 25-19) at the WTAMU Fieldhouse "The Box" in Canyon.
WT opened the first set with a strong performance, gaining momentum after an early exchange of points.
Parker Gladhill and
Taytum Stow led the attack with crucial kills, helping the Lady Buffs pull ahead 5-3. The team then capitalized on Midwestern's errors and continued to build their lead, with
Kaycee Cavanaugh and
Currie Marusak adding to the scoreboard.
Emma Becker and Stow's defensive efforts, including blocks, further extended the lead to 17-8. A service ace from the Buffs pushed the advantage to 17-8, showcasing efficient play. Despite a few errors allowing Midwestern to narrow the gap slightly, the Lady Buffs maintained control and closed the set with a kill by Becker, securing a 25-15 victory in the first set.
The Lady Buffs opened the second set with a strong offensive push, quickly establishing a lead as Becker and Cavanaugh each secured early kills. The team continued to capitalize on Midwestern's errors, building momentum with contributions from Stow and Cavanaugh, who executed key kills to extend the lead.
Bromli Watson facilitated the attack with multiple assists, including a decisive service ace that widened the gap. Marusak added to the offensive effort with several kills, ensuring the Lady Buffs maintained control throughout the set. The set concluded with a kill from Marusak and an attack error by Midwestern, resulting in a 25-13 set win for WT.
The third set began with the Lady Buffs building momentum as Cavanaugh and Becker each contributed kills, helping the team to an early 5-1 lead. Midwestern responded with a scoring run, capitalizing on several errors to take control with a 10-5 advantage. The Lady Buffs made a push to close the gap, with Marusak and Gladhill adding key points to pull within 14-14. The teams exchanged leads, with Cavanaugh's consistent offensive efforts keeping the score tight at 20-20. Despite a strong effort from the Lady Buffs, Midwestern edged ahead in the closing moments, as a series of errors allowed the visitors to secure the set 25-21.
In the fourth set, the Lady Buffs seized early momentum with Gladhill and Stow delivering kills, aided by Watson's precise assists, pushing the score to 7-2. Stow continued her impactful performance, tallying multiple kills that extended the lead to 13-6, while Marusak contributed with service aces, further solidifying the WT advantage. Midwestern attempted to rally with a series of kills from Demi Stauffenberg and Arrianna Fields, bringing the score closer at 18-14. However, the Lady Buffs maintained their composure, capitalizing on opponent errors and securing crucial points with decisive plays from Becker and Cavanaugh. The set concluded with Cavanaugh's kill, finalizing the set at 25-19.
Stow led the Lady Buffs with 16 kills on a .483 hitting percentage and added six total blocks for a team-high 20.5 points. Marusak contributed 13 kills and three service aces, totaling 16 points. Cavanaugh tallied 14 kills alongside 15 digs, accumulating 15 points. Watson, the LSC Setter of the Week, facilitated the offense with 54 assists, coordinating the attack throughout the match as she became the first Lady Buff with 50+ assists since 2019.
Alayna Guerrero excelled as a playmaker for Midwestern State, leading the team with 39 assists over four games, contributing significantly to their offensive efforts. Arrianna Fields was effective on the attack, securing 13 kills with a .300 hitting percentage, while also adding 13.5 points. Trinity Vinzant contributed defensively with 12.5 points, bolstered by her four total blocks, one service ace, and five digs.
WT concluded their homestand on Saturday afternoon as the Greyhounds of Eastern New Mexico make their way to Canyon for LSC action beginning at 2:00 p.m. at The Box.
