Lady Buffs Battle UT Tyler in the LSC Quarterfinals on Friday Afternoon

CANYON, Texas – The Lady Buffs begin postseason action on Friday afternoon as they travel to Frisco, Texas to take part in the 2024 Lone Star Conference Women's Basketball Championships with a quarterfinal matchup against second-seeded UT Tyler with tipoff set for 2:30 p.m. inside of the Comerica Center.
 
LUBBOCK CHRISTIAN RECAP
The Lady Buffs showed heart and overcame a slow start to the game as a big fourth quarter run gave WT a chance at a win on Senior Day, a last second shot attempt wouldn't fall as Lubbock Christian left Canyon with a 61-58 victory in the regular-season finale at the First United Bank Center.
 
Karley Motschenbacher led the way for the Lady Buffs as the Moorhead, Minnesota product went 4-of-5 from the floor including 1-of-1 from deep and 5-of-6 from the free throw line for a team-high 14 points to go along with nine rebounds, two assists, one block and a steal. Grace Alvarez (11) and Hollie Stalder (10) also finished in double-figures.
 
A LOOK AT THE PATRIOTS
The Patriots enter the LSC Championships with an overall record of 24-7 as they finished league play with a 18-4 overall record to sit second in the East division standings. UT Tyler dropped their final two regular season contests to Angelo State (69-62) and #10 Texas Woman's (69-59) in Tyler.
 
UT Tyler finished the 2022-23 campaign with an overall record of 27-8 with a 18-4 mark in league action to earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. The Patriots would pick up wins over Colorado School of Mines, Angelo State and Lubbock Christian to win the South Central Regional Championship before falling to top-seeded Ashland (81-72) in the NCAA National Quarterfinals.
 
Tina Machalova leads the way offensively for the Patriots as the junior guard from Kosice, Slovakia has gone 134-of-286 (46.9%) from the field including 48-of-129 (37.2%) from behind the arc and 76-of-96 (79.2%) from the free throw line to average 12.6 points per game to go along with 88 rebounds (38 offensive, 88 defensive), 40 assists, 22 steals and two blocks.
 
UTT HEAD COACH REBECCA ALVIDREZ
Rebecca Alvidrez is now in her third season at the helm of the UT Tyler women's basketball program. She spent the previous four seasons as the Associate Head Coach at Stephen F. Austin under former Lady Buff head coach Mark Kellogg. Alvidrez played professionally overseas following a standout career at Montana State where she was a two-time All-Big Sky selection.
 
THE SERIES
Friday afternoon marks just the sixth all-time meeting on the hardwood between the Lady Buffs and Patriots in the series that dates back to 2020. The only other neutral site matchup came in last year's LSC Quarterfinals, a 75-54 victory by the Patriots.
 
The last meeting saw Kyla Kane go 9-of-12 from the floor including 5-of-6 from behind the arc for a team-high 23 points while Nyalam Thabach registered a double-double (18 points, 14 rebounds) in a 73-54 victory by the Lady Buffs at the First United Bank Center in Canyon back on January 27th.
 
WT HEAD COACH JOSH PROCK
Josh Prock is now in his third season at the helm of the Lady Buff Basketball program. The Lady Buffs made the program's 28th appearance in the NCAA Division II Postseason during the 2022-23 campaign as they went 21-11 overall including a 14-8 mark in LSC action. 
 
Prock was introduced as West Texas A&M's head women's basketball coach on June 2, 2021. Prock is no stranger to the Lone Star Conference as he spent eight seasons as the head coach at Eastern New Mexico leading the Greyhounds to their only three NCAA Tournament appearances in program history.
 
LSC POSTSEASON HONORS
WT's Karley Motschenbacher and Nyalam Thabach were honored for their efforts on the hardwood on Wednesday night as the Lone Star Conference announced their annual women's basketball postseason awards prior to the start of the LSC Championships in Frisco.
 
Motschenbacher was named to the All-LSC First Team as well as a member of the All-Defensive squad while Thabach picked up All-LSC Third Team honors. Thabach earned conference honors for the second straight season while Motschenbacher claimed All-LSC recognition for the third straight season, being selected on the First Team with All-Defensive honors the last two campaigns.
 
HOME SWEET HOME
West Texas A&M is home to one of the finest multi-purpose facilities in the country as the First United Bank Center has served as the home of the Lady Buffs since January 26, 2002. The Lady Buffs are a staggering 279-43 inside of the FUBC during that time for a winning clip of 86.6%. WT has averaged 1,035 fans per contest since the facility opened its doors with the largest crowd coming on Opening Night with 4,941 members of Buff Nation seeing the Lady Buffs take on rival Abilene Christian.
 
LADY BUFFS IN THE LSC CHAMPIONSHIP
The Lady Buffs are in the Lone Star Conference Championship for the 31st straight campaign and the 36th overall time which is the most of any LSC institutions. WT is 61-19 all-time at the LSC Championship for a winning percentage of 76.3%. The Lady Buffs have made 23 appearances in the Title Game with 16 Championships since 1987.
