WT Track and Field Set to Host First Outdoor Season Meet

CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M Track and Field are set to open the outdoor season at home tomorrow, March 15-16, in Canyon, Texas as they host the WT Spring Break Open at the Track & Field Complex. The women's and men's discus will be the sole event to start things off for WT at 4:00 p.m. CT tomorrow. On Saturday, March 16, events will start at 12:00 p.m. CT with the high jump first, with running events starting at 2:30 p.m.
 
The WT Spring Break Open will be open to the public. 
 
There will be no live stream video of the meet but fans can follow along on Twitter at @WTAMUTrackXC to keep up with the Buffs and Lady Buffs. 
 
MEET PREVIEW
Saturday's meet will see a WT student-athlete in nearly every event for both the men's and women's programs. 
  
The meet in Canyon will feature ten universities competing from NJCAA, NAIA and NCAA DII programs such as Colby CC, Garden City CC, Friends University, South Plains, Pratt CC, Oklahoma Panhandle State, Lubbock Christian, Eastern New Mexico, Northwest Kansas and your host, West Texas A&M. 
 
Unattached runners competing at West Texas A&M will include alumni Joseph Manu, Brien Pittman and Quinton Sansing.
 
OUTDOOR 2023
The Buffs finished the 2023 outdoor season as national runner-up contenders with the relay teams highlighting the national meet. The Buffs broke a 10-year record set by St. Augustine's in the men's 4x100 running the event in 38.7 seconds. The Buffs 4x400 broke the WT school record set in 1979 with their national championship time of 3 minutes, 5.8 seconds. 
 
The Lady Buffs finished third in the nation with points scored in nine events. The steeplechase was won by graduate student Eleonora Curtabbi while the relays (4x 1 and 4x4) placed in the top-five. 
 
ENDING INDOOR ON A HIGH NOTE
The Buffs and Lady Buffs each finished in the Top 5 at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships last weekend in Pittsburg, Kansas with the Buffs taking fourth place and the Lady Buffs in fifth place in the nation, respectfully. 
 
The Buffs finished for the second year in a row on the podium with a total 37 points. The Lady Buffs finished with 39 points.  
 
Florance Uwajeneza finished as the national champion in the 5,000-meter race where she broke her own school record in 16 minutes and 5 seconds. 
Isaac Botsio finished as national runner-up in the 60m with a time of 6.67.  
The Buffs distance medley relay broke their own school record set earlier this year to take national runner-up in the event in 9 minutes, 42.4 seconds. 
 
UP NEXT
WT heads to the Masked Rider Open in Lubbock, Texas on March 22-23 at the Fuller Track & Field Complex.
