Lady Buffs and Belles Set for a Saturday Afternoon Battle in San Angelo

CANYON, Texas – The Lady Buffs close out their Lone Star Conference road trip on Saturday afternoon as they travel to San Angelo, Texas to take on the Belles of Angelo State in divisional action with tipoff set for 1:00 p.m. inside of Stephens Arena at the Junell Center.
 
UT PERMIAN BASIN RECAP
The Lady Buffs had a three-game win streak snapped on Thursday night as 25 West Texas A&M turnovers led to 19 points by UT Permian Basin on the way to a 70-65 Lone Star Conference victory at the Falcon Dome in Odessa, Texas.
 
Nyalam Thabach led the way for the Lady Buffs as the senior from Boise, Idaho went 4-of-6 from the floor including 2-of-2 from behind the arc for a team-high 14 points to go along with eight rebounds, one steal and a block. Karley Motschenbacher chipped in 13 points with eight boards while Azia Himeur hit four times from behind the arc for 12 points.
 
A LOOK AT THE BELLES
Angelo State enters the weekend with an overall record of 16-3 with a 10-4 mark in Lone Star Conference action following a 61-42 win over the Lady Chaps of Lubbock Christian on Thursday night in San Angelo.
 
The Belles finished the 2022-23 campaign with an overall mark of 26-7 with a 17-5 mark in league action on their way to a Lone Star Conference Tournament Title and the hosting duties for the South Central Regional Tournament where they topped the Lady Buffs (70-65) in the quarterfinal round before falling to eventual Regional Champion UT Tyler, 71-61.
 
Tayjanna McGhee-Pleasant leads the way offensively for the Belles as the senior from nearby Tascosa High School has gone 142-of-334 (42.5%) from the floor including 27-of-97 (27.8%) from deep and 68-of-87 (78.2%) from the free throw line to average 15.8 points per game to go along with 209 rebounds (43 offensive, 166 defensive), 37 assists, 19 blocks and 22 steals.
 
Alesha Ellis is now in her third season at the helm of the Angelo State women's basketball program after spending eight seasons at Wayland Baptist where she led the Flying Queens to an overall mark of 189-52 with eight NAIA Tournament appearances. Ellis was a standout prep-player at nearby Plainview High School where she claimed three 3A State Championships with the Bulldogs followed by a collegiate career at Texas Tech.
 
THE SERIES
Saturday afternoon marks the 83rd all-time meeting on the hardwood between the Lady Buffs and Belles as WT holds a 59-23 advantage in the series that dates back to 1987. The Lady Buffs are 51-13 all-time in San Angelo as they have dropped their last two trips to the Junell Center.
 
The last meeting saw Hollie Stalder go 7-of-13 from the floor for a team-high 18 points followed by Kyla Kane with nine points and Zoey McBroom with seven. Angelo State picked up a 70-58 victory at the First United Bank Center for their first victory in Canyon since March of 2019 during the NCAA Tournament.
 
WT HEAD COACH JOSH PROCK
Josh Prock is now in his third season at the helm of the Lady Buff Basketball program. The Lady Buffs made the program's 28th appearance in the NCAA Division II Postseason during the 2022-23 campaign as they went 21-11 overall including a 14-8 mark in LSC action. 
 
Prock was introduced as West Texas A&M's head women's basketball coach on June 2, 2021. Prock is no stranger to the Lone Star Conference as he spent eight seasons as the head coach at Eastern New Mexico leading the Greyhounds to their only three NCAA Tournament appearances in program history.
 
HOME SWEET HOME
West Texas A&M is home to one of the finest multi-purpose facilities in the country as the First United Bank Center has served as the home of the Lady Buffs since January 26, 2002. The Lady Buffs are a staggering 272-37 inside of the FUBC during that time for a winning clip of 87.7%. WT has averaged 1,025 fans per contest since the facility opened its doors with the largest crowd coming on Opening Night with 4,941 members of Buff Nation seeing the Lady Buffs take on rival Abilene Christian.
 
LSC BASKETBALL PRESEASON POLL
Defending LSC Tournament Champion Angelo State picked up 15 of the possible 44 first place votes for a total of 652 points to sit atop of the poll followed by Texas Woman's (17 first place, 633), UT Tyler (nine first place, 627), Lubbock Christian (three first place, 606) and West Texas A&M (524) to round out the top five.
 
Texas A&M-Kingsville was tabbed sixth with 492 points followed by St. Edward's (379), Cameron (311), Oklahoma Christian (270), UT Permian Basin (270), Eastern New Mexico (248), Western New Mexico (233), Texas A&M International (225), UAFS (202), Midwestern State (172) and St. Mary's (140).
 
Grace Foster of Lubbock Christian and Sawyer Lloyd of Angelo State were named the 2023-24 Co-Preseason Players of the Year. Foster and Lloyd headline a list of 16 LSC Players to Watch in the 2023-24 season.
