Lady Buffs Travel to Odessa for LSC Divisional Action on Thursday

CANYON, Texas – The Lady Buffs hit the road for Lone Star Conference divisional action on Thursday night as they travel to Odessa, Texas to take on the Falcons of UT Permian Basin with tipoff set for 5:15 p.m. at the Falcon Dome.
 
MIDWESTERN STATE RECAP
The Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M closed out their homestand in style on Saturday afternoon as they picked up their third straight victory, 67-56 over the Midwestern State Mustangs at the First United Bank Center in Canyon.
 
Kyla Kane led the way for the Lady Buffs as the Wellington product went 6-of-15 from the floor including 3-of-8 from behind the arc for a game-high 17 points to go along with three rebounds and three blocks. Karley Motschenbacher chipped in 15 points while grabbing a team-high 10 points for the double-double.
 
A LOOK AT THE FALCONS
The Falcons enter the weekend with an overall record of 17-3 with a 12-2 mark in Lone Star Conference play following a 69-51 victory over Eastern New Mexico on Saturday afternoon in Portales. UTPB carries at seven game win streak into this week's action in Odessa.
 
The Falcons finished the 2022-23 campaign with an overall record of 13-15 with a 10-12 mark in Lone Star Conference action to mark the highest win total in program history, narrowly missing out on the LSC Championships in Frisco. 
 
Andreea Mancha leads the way offensively for the Falcons as the senior guard from Alvin, Texas has gone 80-of-209 (38.3%) from the floor including 50-of-136 (36.8%) from behind the arc and 50-of-69 (72.5%) from the free throw line to average 13.0 points per game to go along with 61 rebounds (17 offensive, 44 defensive), 65 assists, 25 steals and three blocks. Mancha spent two seasons at Hill College where she is the all-time leader in 3-pointers made while ranking third in scoring for the Rebels.
 
UTPB HEAD COACH RAE BOOTHE
Rae Boothe is now in her seventh season as the helm of the UT Permian Basin women's basketball program. She took over the UTPB program in August of 2017 following seven seasons as the head coach at Friends University in Wichita, Kansas where she went 159-67 overall, leading the Falcons to six straight 20-win seasons including five NAIA Tournament appearances and two trips to the Sweet 16. 
 
THE SERIES
Thursday night marks the 18th all-time meeting on the hardwood between the Lady Buffs and Falcons as WT holds a 15-2 advantage in the all-time series. UTPB's 66-53 victory back on January 13th in Canyon snapped a 14-game win streak by the Lady Buffs in the series. WT is a perfect 6-0 all-time at the Falcon Dome in Odessa.
 
The last meeting saw Zoey McBroom lead the way for the Lady Buffs as the sophomore from Canyon went 4-of-14 from the field including 3-of-9 from behind the arc for a team-high 12 points in the 66-53 win by the Falcons in Canyon.
 
WT HEAD COACH JOSH PROCK
Josh Prock is now in his third season at the helm of the Lady Buff Basketball program. The Lady Buffs made the program's 28th appearance in the NCAA Division II Postseason during the 2022-23 campaign as they went 21-11 overall including a 14-8 mark in LSC action. 
 
Prock was introduced as West Texas A&M's head women's basketball coach on June 2, 2021. Prock is no stranger to the Lone Star Conference as he spent eight seasons as the head coach at Eastern New Mexico leading the Greyhounds to their only three NCAA Tournament appearances in program history.
 
HOME SWEET HOME
West Texas A&M is home to one of the finest multi-purpose facilities in the country as the First United Bank Center has served as the home of the Lady Buffs since January 26, 2002. The Lady Buffs are a staggering 272-37 inside of the FUBC during that time for a winning clip of 87.7%. WT has averaged 1,025 fans per contest since the facility opened its doors with the largest crowd coming on Opening Night with 4,941 members of Buff Nation seeing the Lady Buffs take on rival Abilene Christian.
 
LSC BASKETBALL PRESEASON POLL
Defending LSC Tournament Champion Angelo State picked up 15 of the possible 44 first place votes for a total of 652 points to sit atop of the poll followed by Texas Woman's (17 first place, 633), UT Tyler (nine first place, 627), Lubbock Christian (three first place, 606) and West Texas A&M (524) to round out the top five.
 
Texas A&M-Kingsville was tabbed sixth with 492 points followed by St. Edward's (379), Cameron (311), Oklahoma Christian (270), UT Permian Basin (270), Eastern New Mexico (248), Western New Mexico (233), Texas A&M International (225), UAFS (202), Midwestern State (172) and St. Mary's (140).
 
Grace Foster of Lubbock Christian and Sawyer Lloyd of Angelo State were named the 2023-24 Co-Preseason Players of the Year. Foster and Lloyd headline a list of 16 LSC Players to Watch in the 2023-24 season.
