Men's Basketball Faces Tough Road Test on Thursday

CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M men's basketball team hits the road for the first time in the 2024-25 season when the Buffs travel to Central Oklahoma on Thursday, Nov. 14. The Buffs and Bronchos are scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m. inside the Hamilton Field House in Edmond, Okla.

The Athletic Communications Department from Central Oklahoma will provide live stats and a pay-per-view web stream. Fans wanting to watch the game will need to purchase the stream through the MIAA Network.
 
A LOOK AT THE BUFFS
WT travels to Edmond after a 111-67 win over Oklahoma Panhandle State on Friday. The Buffs rolled in the 44-point victory to remain undefeated on the season at 3-0.
 
The Buffs are led by junior guard Ahamed Mohammed who averages 24.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. Noah Pagotto follows Mohammed with 17.7 points and 4.3 rebounds per game while Isaac Ayoubi also averages double digits with 10.0 points per contest. Mohammed also paces WT with 10 total assists while tying Bob Griechen for the team lead with five steals. Griechen, Harry Evans, and Pagotto have blocked two shots each on the season.  
 
SCOUTING CENTRAL OKLAHOMA
The Bronchos host the Buffs after a pair of wins to open the season. Central Oklahoma defeated University of Mary 90-74 before taking down Northwestern Oklahoma State 92-77.  The Bronchos are led by head coach Bob Hoffman who is in his sixth season at UCO and 31st in his career. Hoffman has produced a 96-53 record in Edmond with a 615-374 career record.
 
On the season, UCO averages 91.0 points per game on 52.8 percent shooting from the field while giving up 75.5 points per game to opponents. All five starters for the Bronchos average double-digit scoring paced by Jordan Thompson's 17.5 per contest. JV Seat (16.5), Jacobi Sebock (15.0), Israel Hart (14.5), and Luke Haasl (11.5) also average double figures. Sebock leads the team with 7.0 rebounds per game while Thompson leads the team with 17 assists and seven steals.
 
THE SERIES
WT leads the all-time series with Central Oklahoma 26-22 with the last meeting between the former Lone Star Conference opponents coming in 2018. Tom Brown is 1-0 against the Bronchos in his tenure at the helm of the Buffs. The Buffs won the 2018 meeting after a seven-year hiatus in the series. WT is 3-2 in the last five meetings with UCO and 6-4 in the last 10.

LAST TIME OUT
The West Texas A&M men's basketball cruised to a 44-point victory over the Oklahoma Panhandle State Aggies on Friday night in Canyon. Five Buffs reached double-digit scoring on Friday night led by a game-high 21 from Noah Pagotto. Ahamed Mohammed (20), Nicholas Jett (13), Narit Chotikavanic (13), and Bob Griechen (11) also ended their night in double figures. Kemper Jones recorded a game-leading nine rebounds with Mohammed posting four assists and Griechen recording four steals. With 3:31 to play in the game, a three from Mackenzie Morgan put the Buffs over the century mark. Down the stretch, the lead reached as high as 47 before a three from Enzo Edom created the final 44-point differential.
 
THE BROWN ERA
Head coach Tom Brown enters his 11th season at the helm of Buffalo Basketball, building the program into one of the elite NCAA Division II schools in the nation.  He has guided the Buffs to seven consecutive NCAA Tournaments including the Buffs first-ever NCAA Division II National Championship game in 2021. Under Brown, the Buffs are 269-62 since he took the reins in 2014 for an incredible winning percentage of 81.3%.  Brown registered his 250th career victory on Jan. 13, 2024, after the Buffs defeated UT Permian Basin, 77-69, to become just the second coach in program history to reach the 250-win plateau. 


NABC TOP 25 POLL
Minnesota State topped the rankings with 10 first-place votes and 393 points followed closely by Nova Southeastern with six first-place votes and 390 points. West Texas A&M sits third with 346 points while MSU Moorhead (271) and Dallas Baptist (233) finish out the top five. California (Pa.) occupies the sixth spot with 222 points with Gannon (204), Colorado School of Mines (190), North Georgia (184), and Washburn rounding out the top 10.
 
The South Central Region is represented by five teams in the poll with WT leading the way. DBU (5th), Colorado School of Mines (8th), Colorado Mesa (21st), and Fort Lewis (22nd) also earned spots in the poll while Lubbock Christian, MSU Denver, and St. Edward's earned votes.
 
ON THIS DAY: NOV. 14
Thursday's game marks just the fifth time the Buffs have played on this date and first since 2021. WT is 3-1 in games on Nov. 14 with all four contests coming under Tom Brown. The Buffs have averaged 82.8 points per game on this date while holding opponents to 75.8.

LSC PRESEASON FAVORITE
WT earned the top spot in the poll with 28 first-place votes and 687 points followed by Dallas Baptist with 12 first-place votes and 671 points. Lubbock Christian (4 fpv, 628) took the third spot while Angelo State (555) and St. Edward's (545) make up the top five. Texas A&M International (1 fpv, 427), Eastern New Mexico (391), Cameron (386), UT Permian Basin (338), and Oklahoma Christian hold the sixth through 10th spots, respectively. Midwestern State (318), St. Mary's (313), Texas A&M-Kingsville (198), UT Tyler (152), Western New Mexico (124), and Sul Ross State (63) finish out the poll.
 
THE LONE STAR
The 2024-25 LSC basketball schedule will feature 16 men's teams in two divisions with each team playing a double round-robin schedule within their division. Additionally, teams will play eight crossover competitions against teams from the opposite division for a total of 22 conference games.
 
The Lone Star Conference presents its 51st men's basketball tournament March 7-8-9, 2025, played at Comerica Center in Frisco, Texas. The eight-team bracket includes the East and West Division winners, who automatically receive berths, with the remaining qualifiers and seeding based on results versus all LSC teams. The Division II Men's Basketball Championship starts with regionals March 14-18 at campus sites and continues to the Elite Eight March 25-29 in Evansville, Ind.
 
2023-24 REVIEW
The Buffs returned to the Final Four in the 2023-24 season, capturing the program's fifth regional title. Despite seeing its run of consecutive Lone Star Conference tournament titles come to an end, WT earned the top seed in the South Central region, hosting the regional tournament for the second consecutive year. The Buffs swept their way through the regional tournament, defeating eight-seeded Angelo State and fourth-seeded and No. 12-ranked Dallas Baptist to reach the championship game. Facing off against third-seeded and No. 6-ranked Colorado Mesa, a big second half lifted the Buffs to the regional title with Larry Wise earning Tournament MVP honors. At the Elite Eight, WT defeated fifth-seeded and No. 14-ranked North Georgia 90-76 to advance to the Final Four where top-seeded Minnesota State outlasted the Buffs, 79-72.
 
HOME SWEET HOME
West Texas A&M is home to one of the finest multi-purpose facilities in the country as the First United Bank Center has served as the home of the Buffaloes since January 26, 2002. The Buffaloes are a staggering 269-56 inside of the FUBC during that time for a winning clip of 82.8%. The Buffs are an astounding 148-15 at the First United Bank Center under Tom Brown including three undefeated seasons at home.
 
HOME OF CHAMPIONS

West Texas A&M is home to one of the most successful athletic programs in all of NCAA Division II.
 
The Buffs and Lady Buffs finished third in the 2023-24 Division II LEARFIELD Director's Cup standings. It marked the sixth straight and eighth overall time that WT finished inside of the Top 10 including the fifth straight inside of the Top 5.
 
UP NEXT
WT returns home for a South Central Regional matchup with Adams State on Thursday, Nov. 21. The Buffs and Grizzlies are scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. inside the First United Bank Center.
