Women’s Basketball Adds Grace Alvarez for the 2023-24 Campaign

CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M head women's basketball coach Josh Prock has announced the addition of UTEP transfer Grace Alvarez for the 2023-24 campaign.

"We are thrilled to announce the signing of Grace Alvarez to our program. She is a very smart player who understands the game very well. Grace is a very well-rounded player who can do it all" said Prock "Grace is a pass first point guard who looks to get her teammates involved but can score when called upon. She is a tremendous leader on and off the court and will come in and add great depth to our back court."

Alvarez comes to Canyon following two seasons at the University of Texas-El Paso where she saw time in 42 games for the Miners, averaging 4.7 minutes per contest as she went 17-of-57 (29.8%) from the floor including 13-of-46 (28.3%) from deep and 4-of-6 (66.7%) from the free throw line to average 1.2 points per game to go along with 20 rebounds, 13 assists, two blocks and five steals.

The talented guard is a 2021 graduate of Heights High School in Houston where she played point guard and shooting guard for the Bulldogs under head coach Kerrick Arrington. During her senior season, Alvarez led the Bulldogs to an overall record of 24-5 including an undefeated mark of 12-0 in District play as she averaged 15.8 points per game.

"Grace will come into our program and help us continue to elevate us to the place we want to be at the end of the year" added Prock "We are excited about her and we know she will represent us very well off the court as well."

Grace is the daughter of Gabriel and Anna Alvarez and she has three siblings: Gabriel, Gabrielle and Gabriela. She is expected to major in Sports Management at West Texas A&M.

"Grace is a throwback point guard who believes in getting her teammates involved first but she can also put up a lot of points" said head coach Kerrick Arrington of Heights High School "She is a kid who started playing basketball at an early age and has a high basketball IQ. She comes from a loving and very supportive family. She will be a great asset to any basketball program."
