LOOKING TO REPEAT
The Buffs and Lady Buffs dominated the indoor conference championships earlier this season and look to make the clean sweep in Lubbock. Last season the Buffs and Lady Buffs won the outdoor Lone Star Conference Championships.
Â
WT secured wins with their 4x100 relays and 200-meter race.  There are high expectations for the weekend with the maroon and white combined having 4 No. 1 nation leading events and ten top-5 performances in NCAA Division II.Â
Â
NO. 3 LADY BUFFS
The Lady Buffs won 11 individual events at last season's championship to claim the program's fifth conference title led byÂ
Eleonora Curtabbi, Raquel Chavez, DeOndra Green, Leah Belfield andÂ
Taylor Nelloms as each earned a victory in their respective events.Â
Â
WT has the top relay team in the nation with four Lady BuffsÂ
Alana Wilson,Â
DeOndra Green, Leah Belfield andÂ
Jordanae' Scott running as a team for past four seasons. Their nation leading time is 44.34 and they own three out of four top times in the nation this season.Â
Â
Eleonora Curtabbi is currently the nation's leader in the steeplechase and in the 1500 meter. Her dominating performance at the Texas Relays saw her take first as the only non-Division I athlete in the event. She ended up breaking her own time at the Bryan Clay Invitational with her first sub-10 steeplechase time of 9:57.76.Â
 Â
The Lady Buffs have been equally dominant in the jump as they have won five straight triple jump titles. Â
Taylor Nelloms looks to defend her conference title in the event and in the high jump.  The junior is second in the nation in the triple but will be challenged by teammateÂ
Brooke Urban who ranks seventh in the nation in the high jump. Â
Daniela Pesic also looks to land on the podium in the long jump where she ranks 19
th in DII.Â
Â
NO. 2 BUFFS
The Buffs look to repeat their outdoor conference championship from last season after winning their first Lone Star Conference Championship. Freshman sprinter,
Isaac Botsio, will be one to watch in the 100 meter and 4x100 as the anchor for his team. Botsio ranks second fastest in NCAA Division II history with his time of 10.06 at the Jo Meaker Classic & Multi earlier this season. He ranks just behind Buff alumni turned professional runner,
Benjamin Azamati.Â
 Â
Just like the Lady Buffs, the Buffs have been dominant in individual events having won ten of the last 12 conference championships in the steeplechase including six straight since 2016. Â
Noah Bundrock took home first last year with a time of 9:05.28 andÂ
had a stellar performance earlier this season at the Bryan Clay Invitational where he took the No. 1 spot in the WT record books all-time for his time 8:55.44. Â
Â
Butare Rugenerwa remains as one of the top mid-distance runners in the country as he ranks fourth in the 800m after his efforts at the Bryan Clay Invitational.Â
Â
Jeremiah Lauzon will be competing to hold onto his top time in the 200 meter atop the NCAA Division II records. He ranks No. 1 this season with a time of 20.62. His teammates
Jerry Jakpa,
Joseph Manu and
Quinton Sansing will be competing alongside Lauzon in the 200 meter. All four-athletes rank in the top-6 in the nation in the event.Â
For the jumps,
Hamdi Ali leads the conference in the high jump while
Seniru Amarasinghe ranks second in the high jump and will face tough conference competition to make the podium.
Â
A LOOK AT THE RANKINGS
The West Texas A&M men's and women's track & field programs remained in the top 3 after the release of the latest edition of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division II Outdoor Rating Index on Tuesday afternoon.Â
Â
The Buffs and Lady Buffs remained within the top three DII standings for the fourth consecutive week with both of their 4x100 relay teams holding onto the No. 1 spot. The Buffs have five top-5 individual performances, and the Lady Buffs lead in two individual events, steeplechase and 1500-meter, with five top-5 events of their own.Â
