Holcombe Places First, WT Looks Toward Day Two of Masked Rider Open

MEET NOTESĀ 
LIVE STATSĀ 

CANYON, TX – West Texas A&M Track and Field running events along with jumping events will compete tomorrow at the Masked Rider Open and Texas Tech University outdoor at the Terry & Linda Fuller Track and Field Complex.Ā 

DAY ONEĀ 

WT had seven student-athletes competing today in the throwing events. Three Lady Buffs, Hope Gray, Meadow Gallentine and Alexandria Tice. Throwing for the Buffs were Luke Holcombe, Ray Dixon, Ethan Hollinshead and Jon Tucker. Hollinshead improved his mark in the shot put by 0.48m.Ā Ā 

The events started with men's then women's discus, followed by men's and women's shot put. Luke Holcombe took first in the shot put with 16.69m. He beat out the second-place finisher from Barton County by 0.10m.Ā Ā 

Meadow Gallentine and Alexandria Tice placed in the top ten of the shot put. Gallentine threw her personal best beating her performance at last weekend's WT Spring Break Open.Ā Ā 

MEET PREVIEWĀ 

The start of tomorrows Masked Rider Open will begin at 1:00 PM with pole vault and other jumping events followed by running events starting at 2:00 PM. The Buffs and Lady Buffs will look to improve on their previous marks from their home meet last weekend and are focused on hitting provisional marks.Ā Ā 

ATHLETES TO WATCHĀ 

Taylor Nelloms, who was just named the USTFCCCA Indoor Women's Field Athlete of the Year, will be competing this outdoor season in the long jump, triple jump and high jump. She was selected LSC Athlete to Watch this outdoor season as well.Ā Ā 

Among that list is sprinter Quinton Sansing, long jumper Joseph Oreva and distance runner Eleonora Curtabbi. All four student-athletes have proven track records of success in the outdoor with the Buffs taking second at Nationals last year and the Lady Buffs winning the National Championship.Ā Ā

PROVISIONALSĀ 

Provisional marks are times, distances or jumps that have a good chance of qualifying for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Nationals.Ā Ā 

Eight athletes hit a provisional mark at WT's Spring Break Open last weekend,Ā Daniela PesicĀ jumped a distance of 6.05m in the long jump.Ā Laiten GreesonĀ ran the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.10. She also placed second in the high jump with a jump of 1.53m.Ā Ā Luke HolcombeĀ threw a distance of 17.30 in the shot-put, which placed him third best outdoor throw of all time for WT.Ā Ā 

The men's 4X100 hit provisional as a team with a time of 39.85. The team started off the block withĀ Desmond Aryee, followed byĀ Jerry Jakpa, withĀ Jalen PurcellĀ and closed out byĀ Quinton Sansing. Japka claimed provisional in the 100m as well with a time of 10.47.Ā Ā Ā

UP NEXTĀ 

West Texas A&M will compete at the Texas Relays from March 29-April 1 at the Mike A. Myers Stadium at University of Texas in Austin, Texas.Ā Ā
