Track & Field Has a Strong Opening Day in Lubbock

CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M Track & Field started off the New Year in style on Friday afternoon with a strong performance during the opening day of the Texas Tech Corky Classic at the Sports Performance Center in Lubbock, Texas.
 
Junior Joey Zimmerman started off the day with a ninth-place finish as the Hutto native advanced to the third height of the women's pole vault to narrowly missed her personal best with a 3.23m (10-7). Taylor Nelloms finished 10th in the women's long jump with a mark of 5.25m (17-2.75) on her first attempt.
 
Brooke Urban impressed in the high jump as the junior from Amarillo was the highest-finishing Division II athlete in the event with a 1.65m (5-5) for a sixth-place finish overall. 
 
On the men's side, Joseph Oreva made his immediate mark as the Carson-Newman transfer shattered the program record in the long jump on his second attempt at 7.74m (25-4.75) on his way to an event title, that mark is the 26th best jump Division II Indoor history. Brien Pittman picked up a seventh-place finish in the 600y with a time of 1:11.49. 
 
Ray Dixon tossed a pair of Top-10 marks in program history in the weight throw highlighted by a 17.97m (58-11.5) to finish sixth overall followed by Luke Holcombe in eighth with a 17.61m (57-9.5) on his third attempt to rank 10th in WT program history.
 
The second and final day of the Corky Classic begins at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday with the women's shot put and the women's mile. Fans unable to attend the Corky Classic can watch the meet live via Big 12 Now streaming on ESPN+.
