Relay Squads Lead Buffs to Second Place Finish at NCAA Outdoor Championships

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The West Texas A&M Buffaloes capped off a historic season with a second-place finish at the 2022 NCAA Division II Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday.  The Buffs finished on the podium for the second consecutive year, finishing with a program-high 61 points with 16 All-Americans and the 4x100-meter relay National Championship team. 
 
Peniel Richard started off the day with a ninth-place finish in the men's triple jump to pick up All-American honors.  He jumped 49-4.25 (15.04) on his second attempt to make it to the finals. 
 
The quartet of Sifiso Miya, Jeremiah Lauzon, Desmond Aryee and Benjamin Azamati improved off last season's runner up finish as the Buffs won the program's first ever 4x100-meter relay with a school record 39.27.  
 
Jahmaal Wilson ran 13.80 in the 110-meter hurdles to earn silver medalist honors, grabbing an important eight points for WT. 
 
Quinton Sansing tagged another six points to the team score after the junior ran 45.84 in the finals to break former Buff Earl Wilson's 40-year-old record.   The senior from Floresville, Texas product surpassed time of 45.88 set in 1982 to take the bronze medal.
 
Amarillo native Butare Rugenerwa finished second in the 800m as the junior ran 1:51.02 in the finals to earn All-American honors. 
 
Bassem Hemeida broke his own record in the 400m hurdles with a time of 49.68 to finish second just 0.7 seconds behind Ashland's Trevor Bassitt.  He becomes the first Buff to earn silver medal honors while William Frobe finished ninth to also earn All-American accolades. 
 
Azamati and Lauzon would return to the track to compete in the 200 where the Buffs finished 2-6.  Azamati picked up eight points for the Buffs after placing second with a 20.26 time while Lauzon ran 20.66.
 
The final points came from the 4x400-meter squad that broke its own school record.  The foursome of William Frobe, Bassem Hemeida, Malick Diop and Quinton Sansing ran a record-breaking 3:06.52 in the finals to seal the Buffs second-place finish at the national meet.
