ALLENDALE, Mich. – West Texas A&M's
Zada Swoopes and
Sifiso Miya grabbed All-American honors on Thursday during the opening day of the NCAA Division II Outdoor National Track & Field Championships. WT start off day two of the national meet with the men's high jump at 2:30 p.m. CT.
Swoopes opened the national meet doing exactly what she does best. Shatter records. The senior from Whitewright, Texas picked up five important points for the Lady Buffs in the hammer throw as she broke her own school record on her first attempt. She threw even farther on her second throw of 191-5.0 (58.35m) to seal her 4
th-place finish.
Another record would fall for the Lady Buffs as the nation's second-fastest 4x100-meter relay team won Heat 2 to advance to the finals.
Jordanae' Scott,
Leah Belfield,
Alana Wilson and
DeOndra Green came out of the preliminaries with a 44.46 time to set a new school record, breaking their previous time by .13-seconds.
Eleonora Curtabbi will see another day as she will run in tomorrow's 3,000-meter steeplechase finals. The junior ran 10:27.66 in the second heat, recording the fourth-fastest time in the prelims.
Taylor Nelloms jumped 18-9.25 (5.72m) on her second attempt to finish 15
th followed by
Daniela Pesic who placed 18
th at the national meet with a mark of 18-1.5 (5.52m).
Miya was the first to receive All-American recognition for the Buffs after the freshman recorded a 7
th-place finish in the long jump. He jumped 24-7.25 (7.50m) in his first attempt before he leaped 24-9.75 (7.56m) on his third jump to make his ways to the finals.
The 4x100-meter relay squad of Miya,
Jeremiah Lauzon,
Desmond Aryee and
Benjamin Azamati live to see another day as the quartet qualified for Saturday's finals running 39.97 to finish second in their heat.
Junior
Quinton Sansing qualified for the 400m finals after running the sixth-fastest time at 46.68 in the prelims.
Innocent Murwanashyaka finished 18
th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, running 9:15.54.
Two Buffs will compete in the 400m hurdle finals on Saturday with
William Frobe and
Bassem Hemeida. Frobe ran the second-fastest time of the prelims at 50.65 in Heat 1 while despite an hour lightning delay Hemeida came back with the third best time at 50.68 to win his heat.
