Fuenning Lifts the #14 Buffs to a Saturday Sweep in San Angelo

CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M's Will Fuenning connected on three homeruns including a pair of grand slams on Saturday in San Angelo, Texas as the #14 Buffs clinched the Lone Star Conference weekend series against the #7 Angelo State Rams with a pair of victories at Foster Field.
 
The Buffs and Rams conclude their weekend series tomorrow afternoon with the finale set for a 1 p.m. first pitch in San Angelo.
 
GAME ONE
The Rams jumped out to an early lead in the home half of the first inning as Justin Lee singled to center field with two outs to drive in Adam Beck for the 1-0 lead. ASU added to their lead in the second with five runs on five hits highlighted by a Jordan Williams two-run single to left for the 6-1 advantage.
 
The Buffs responded in the top of the third as Eddy Savoie singled to shortstop to score Nollan Koon with one out followed later in the frame by a Kennedy Badgett grand slam to left field to cut the lead to 6-5.
 
WT took the lead in the top of the fourth inning as Paul Wittmann lifted a sacrifice fly to center field with one out to score Koon followed by a Savoie RBI double to the gap in right center that plated Izaiah Madrid for the 7-6 lead. The Buffs weren't done yet as Badgett singled to left with two outs to drive in Savoie followed by a Fuenning grand slam to left center for the 12-6 lead.
 
ASU cut into the lead in the home half of the fourth as Williams doubled to left center with one out to drive in Kolby Kelton followed by a Tayten Tredaway sac fly to make it 12-8. WT responded in the top of the fifth as Wittmann doubled to left field to score Koon for the 13-8 advantage. The Buffs used the long ball again in the top of the sixth with Fuenning second long ball of the game, this time a solo shot to enter for the 14-8 lead.
 
The Rams wouldn't go down without a fight as Tripp Clark lifted a three-run homerun to left field with no outs in the seventh to make it 14-11. Chris Rodriguez would settle in and close out the final three outs for the WT victory.
 
Colton Charnholm picked up the win (8-2) for the Buffs, allowing no runs on two hits with no walks and a pair of strikeouts in his 2.2 innings of relief. 
 
GAME TWO
The Rams got on the board first in the nightcap as Clark doubled down the left field line in the bottom of the second with one out to score Tredaway for the 1-0 lead. WT tied the game in the fifth as Ryan Johnson singled to left field with two outs to score Bryant Bailey.
 
ASU responded in the fifth as a WT error was followed by an Austin Beck two-run shot to left center field for the 3-1 advantage. WT cut into the lead in the sixth as Fuenning lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Adam Becker and make it 3-2.
 
WT headed to the final frame trailing by a run, Savoie doubled off of the wall in left to score Badgett followed by a Fuenning grand slam to center field for his third long ball of the day and his second grand slam as WT claimed the 7-3 victory.
 
AG Ayala picked up the win (3-2) on the mound for the Buffs, allowing no runs on no hits with no walks and a strikeout in his 0.2 innings of relief.
