CANYON, Texas – Former West Texas A&M Head Coach Bob Schneider has been selected as a member of the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2022 announced last night during ESPN2's broadcast of the Maryland/Iowa contest in Iowa City.
Schneider will be joined in the Class of 2022 by Debbie Antonelli (Contributor), Alice "Cookie" Barron (Veteran Player), Doug Bruno (Coach), Becky Hammon (Player), DeLisha Milton-Jones (Player), Paul Sanderford (Coach) and Penny Taylor (International Player).
In 43 seasons as a head coach at Darrouzett High School, McLean High School, Canyon High School, Texas Woman's and West Texas A&M, Schneider racked up an incredible 1,045 wins. His greatest success came in the Canyon community where he led the CHS Lady Eagles to five State Championships and delivered nine Lone Star Conference Championships at the helm of the Lady Buffs.
Schneider was a six-time recipient of the Lone Star Conference Coach of Year Award during his time in Canyon as he finished his 25-year career at WT with an overall record of 585-163 (.784) including an incredible 237-47 (.836) mark in league action. He led the Lady Buffs to nine Lone Star Conference Championships, eight LSC Tournament Titles and three Regional Championships. Schneider coached nine All-American honorees during his time in Canyon.
His 1987-88 squad is still considered one of the best teams in Division II history, winning the first 33 contests of the season before falling in the NCAA Division II National Championship game. The Darrouzett, Texas, native was elected to the Texas Girls Coaches Hall of Fame in 1993 and the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame in 1997. Schneider was inducted into the WTAMU Hall of Champions back in 2011.
Schneider stands among the coaching legends of collegiate and high school basketball as he completed the 2005-06 campaign, his 25th and final at West Texas A&M, with a career all-time record of 1,045-293 (.781). He pushed the Lady Buffs into the national spotlight, guiding WT to 19 seasons of at least 20 victories. Schneider was named the 1997 Women's Basketball Coaches Association's NCAA Division II National Coach of the Year.
He established the Lady Buff program as one of the best in NCAA Division II as that tradition continues today, he sits 47th all-time in career victories in NCAA history while ranking 42nd in career win-percentage. Schneider is the 11th winningest head coach in Division II history while sitting 13th in career win-percentage at the DII level.
The 2022 Induction will mark the 23rd Class of Inductees to be honored by the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, which held its grand opening and inaugural induction in 1999. The Class of 2022 will be inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, receiving their coveted Eastman Trophy and Baron Championship Induction Ring, on June 11, 2022, in Knoxville, Tennessee.
The Women's Basketball Hall of Fame Board of Directors serves as the selection committee in determining which individuals will be inducted each year and which groups will be honored as "Trailblazers of the Game." Voting is based on minimum candidate requirements, which include record of performance, national or international recognition, and contributions to the game of women's basketball.
