CANYON, Texas – The #5 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M return to action on New Year's Day as they welcome the Cameron Aggies to the First United Bank Center for Lone Star Conference action with tipoff set for 1:00 p.m.

The #5 Lady Buffs closed out 2022 in style on Friday night as they shot 51% from the field and forced 21 turnovers on their way to a 86-71 Lone Star Conference West Division victory over the Midwestern State Mustangs at the First United Bank Center in Canyon.
 
Zamorye Roberts led the way offensively for the Lady Buffs as the senior from Portales went 4-of-6 from the floor including 2-of-4 from deep and 3-of-4 from the free throw line for a team-high 13 points to go along with two rebounds, five assists and one steal. Karley Motschenbacher (12), Nyalam Thabach (12) and Kyla Kane (11) all finished in double-figures for the Lady Buffs. 
 
A LOOK AT THE AGGIES
The Aggies enter the new year with an overall record of 6-6 with a 3-3 mark in league action following an 85-34 road loss to Lubbock Christian on Friday night at the Rip Griffin Center. CU is 2-6 on the road this season with the pair of road wins coming against UC Colorado Springs and Southwestern Oklahoma State.
 
Alena Wilson leads the way offensively for the Aggies as the junior forward from Dallas has gone 56-of-123 (45.5%) from the floor including 3-of-24 (12.5%) from deep and 28-of-37 (75.7%) from the charity stripe to average 13.0 points per game to go along with 83 rebounds (31 offensive, 52 defensive), 13 assists, three blocks and 18 steals.
 
Cameron finished the 2021-22 campaign with an overall record of 17-11 with a 11-5 mark in LSC action as they advanced to the quarterfinal round of the LSC Championship. The Aggies picked up a 88-85 home win over Eastern New Mexico before falling to Texas A&M-Commerce, 80-65 at the Comerica Center.
 
CU HEAD COACH JEFF MAHONEY
Jeff Mahoney was named the head coach of the Aggie women's basketball program in May of 2022 after three seasons as the assistant coach. While on the bench for Cameron, Mahoney helped the Aggies to 41 wins, including 17 in 2022, the most in 20 years. In addition to his time as the assistant coach for the women, Mahoney also took the reins of the men's team halfway through the 2021-22 season.
 
THE SERIES
Sunday afternoon will mark the 54th all-time meeting on the hardwood between the Lady Buffs and Aggies as WT holds a 48-5 advantage in the series that dates back to 1982. Cameron is 1-27 all-time in Canyon as they have lost their last 10 trips to the First United Bank Center.
 
WBCA DIVISION II TOP-25 POLL
Grand Valley State picked up 21 of the possible 22 first place votes for a total of 549 points to sit atop of the poll followed by Ashland (524), Drury (461), Glenville State (459), West Texas A&M (one first place, 432), Tampa (418), Minnesota State Mankato (356), Western Washington (344), Missouri Southern (334) and Colorado School of Mines (323) to round out the top ten. The South Central Region was represented by WT (5th), Colorado School of Mines (10th), Texas Woman's (20th) and Angelo State (RV).
 
WT HEAD COACH JOSH PROCK
Josh Prock enters his second season at the helm of the Lady Buff Basketball program after guiding WT to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight during his first season in Maroon & White, finishing the campaign with an overall record of 26-11 as WT claimed the LSC Regular Season and Tournament Titles followed by a run to the South Central Regional Championship.
 
HOME SWEET HOME
West Texas A&M is home to one of the finest multi-purpose facilities in the country as the First United Bank Center has served as the home of the Lady Buffs since January 26, 2002. The Lady Buffs are a staggering 266-37 inside of the FUBC during that time for a winning clip of 87.7%. WT has averaged 1,028 fans per contest since the facility opened its doors with the largest crowd coming on Opening Night with 4,941 members of Buff Nation seeing the Lady Buffs take on rival Abilene Christian.

LSC BASKETBALL PRESEASON POLL
The Lady Buffs picked up 31 of the possible 39 first place votes for a total of 612 points to sit atop of the poll followed by Lubbock Christian (four first place, 557), Texas Woman's (four first place, 538), Angelo State (519), UT Tyler (479), Texas A&M-Kingsville (408), Texas A&M International (371), Cameron (347), Midwestern State (314), Eastern New Mexico (233), St. Edward's (219), UAFS (216), UT Permian Basin (172), Oklahoma Christian (154), St. Mary's (94) and Western New Mexico (71).
 
The 2022-23 LSC basketball schedule will feature 16 women's teams in two divisions. Each team will play a double round-robin schedule within their division. Additionally, teams will play eight crossover competitions against the opposite division for a total of 22 LSC games.
 
HOME OF CHAMPIONS
West Texas A&M is home to one of the most successful athletic programs in all of Division II.
 
The 2021-22 campaign saw WT claimed six Lone Star Conference Championships, three LSC Tournament crowns, two Regional Championships and four Top-5 track and field finishes including the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Women's National Championship. 2022-23 has already started off on a high-note as Lady Buff Volleyball claimed the program's fourth National Title in early December.
