CANYON, Texas – No. 12 Buffaloes of West Texas A&M finish their four-game road trip in San Antonio tomorrow, Feb. 1, at St. Mary's. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT at the Bill Greehey Arena.
SCOUTING THE RATTLERS
The Rattlers of St. Mary's enter Tuesday's game 8-7 overall and 5-1 in conference play to rank second in the league standings led by 17
th year head coach Jim Zeleznak. Under the Shawnee Mission, Kan. native, the Rattlers are 245-224 (.522) with four conference championships and five regional appearances.
As a team, St. Mary's averages 78.1 points a game with a 45.9 percent field goal percentage while averaging 8.8 3-pointers a game to go along with 36.9 rebounds, 14.8 assists, 7.9 steals and 3.6 blocks.
Five players average double figure scoring as StMU is led by Tyler Caron, averages 11.9 points per game as forward from Longview, Texas has totaled 143 points this season along with a team-high 77 rebounds (6.4 rpg).
Kob Magee is the Rattler's second-leading scorer at 11.5 ppg, starting in 12 games this season with a team-high 66 assists. The senior is shooting 37.2 percent (32-of-86) from the deep.
INSIDE THE SERIES
Tuesday's game marks the 20
th meeting between the two programs with WT leading the all-time series 18-1 since the series start in 1940. In the last meeting, the Buffs claimed a 96-77 victory back in December of 2019 with five players reaching double figures.
AROUND THE LEAGUE
Lubbock Christian leads the league as the last remaining undefeated program in the LSC with a perfect 19-0 record with seven conference victories. St. Mary's (7-7, 4-1 LSC) ranks second in the standings followed by DBU (13-7, 6-2), WT (19-4, 6-3) and Texas A&M-Commerce (14-4, 6-3) rounding out the top five.
CLIMBIN' THE LADDER
Zach Toussaint collected a career-high seven 3-pointers on against Midwestern State before posting two against DBU to bring his career total to 183, tying former Buff Tez Dumars on the all-time leader board at fourth. WT All-American David Chavlovich (2014-18) set the all-time career record with 388 threes to the set the program standard.
A LOOK BACK AT ST. EDWARD'S
WT registered their third consecutive win against the Hilltoppers on Monday with a 82-72 victory in Austin with head coach
Tom Brown moving to a 4-1 record against St. Edward's. The Buffs are now 19-3 overall and 6-3 in Lone Star Conference play.
The Buffs finished the game 30-of-60 (50.0%) from the floor and 8-of-19 (42.1%) from three while shooting 14-of-18 (77.8%) at the free throw line. They outrebounded St. Edward's 39-30 to go along with nine assists, five blocks and seven steals. Wise and Brown each scored 21 points for WT while Booker recorded his second double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
A LOOK INSIDE THE NUMBERS
The Buffs have outscored opponents 80.2-66.1 with a 14.1 scoring margin and are shooting 44.0 percent from the floor including 33.6 percent from the deep and 73.9 percent from the free throw line.
As a team, the Buffs average 40.2 rebounds per game alongside 11.6 assists, seven steals, and 3.6 blocks. Three Buffs average double-figure scoring led by
Zach Toussaint and
Larry Wise combining for 684 points.
Toussaint averages 15.3 points a game to rank ninth in scoring average while standing third with 351 total points. Against Midwestern State, Toussaint became the first player to score 36 points in a single game since 2016 while also becoming just the 14
th player in program history to reach the milestone.
Junior guard
Julius Brown has collected a team-high 55 assists and 29 steals this season while averaging 12.7 ppg.
Kavon Booker has brought down a career-high 145 rebounds (6.3 rpg) this season which is the fourth most in the LSC with 48 of those coming on offense to go along with a team-high 23 blocks.
WT HEAD COACH TOM BROWN
Tom Brown earned his 200
th career victory on Monday afternoon with the Buffs victory against St. Edward's, becoming just the third coach in program history to reach the milestone. Brown is in his eighth season at the helm of the Buffs, registering an overall record of 200-47 (.810) with four NCAA Tournament Appearances including the programs first appearance in the National Championship game last season. The two-time LSC Coach of the Year led the Buffs to their fourth consecutive conference tournament championship title.
NABC TOP 25 POLL
WT was one of two members from the Lone Star Conference represented in the rankings as the Buffs dropped to 12
th in the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches Top 25. Lubbock Christian (17-0, 5-0 LSC) remained atop the standings with 15 first-place votes and is one of just two remaining undefeated teams in the national poll. Nova Southeastern (16-0) ranks second with one first-place votes followed Cal State San Bernardino (14-1).
LSC PRESEASON POLL
The four-time defending LSC Champions were picked second after going 19-3 in 2020-21 including the program's first appearance in the National Championship game. WT received 13-of-42 possible first place votes, following the preseason favorite Lubbock Christian with 26. DBU was picked third followed by Texas A&M-Kingsville and St. Edward's in the top five.
Midwestern State was selected sixth followed by Angelo State, Texas A&M-Commerce, UT Tyler, UT Permian Basin, UAFS, St. Mary's, Oklahoma Christian, Eastern New Mexico, Cameron, Texas A&M International and Western New Mexico.
LSC CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Lone Star Conference Championship will take place on March 3-6 with the top 12 teams will qualify for the postseason tournament with the first-round games played on-campus and the remaining eight games in Frisco, Texas at the Comerica Center.
The NCAA South Central Regional Championships are set for March 12-15 followed by the NCAA Elite Eight at the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind.
