CANYON, Texas – No. 12 West Texas A&M returns to competition on tomorrow, Monday, Jan. 31, with a matchup against St. Edward's in Austin. Tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. CT at the Recreation and Athletics Center.
SCOUTING THE HILLTOPPERS
St. Edward's enters tomorrow's game 10-9 and 4-5 in league play. As a team, the Patriots average 79.8 points a game with a 43.8 percent field goal percentage while averaging 10.1 3-pointers a game to go along with 35.3 rebounds, 14.7 assists, 6.9 steals and 3.9 blocks.
St. Edward's is led by Andre Cook who is in his 13
th season as the head coach of the men's program and 18
th overall. He has guided the Hilltoppers who has collected eight winning seasons including a program record 30 wins in 2018-19.
The Hilltoppers are led by Daniel Venzant, averages 18.3 points per game which ranks second in the league. The senior guard has has totaled 348 points this season along with a team-high 32 steals and 87 assists.
Uche Dibiamaka has started in all 19 games for SEU as the team's second leading scorer averages 15.6 ppg while denying a team-high 20 blocks.
Logan Cook totals 157 rebounds this season, averaging 8.3 a game which ranks second in the conference with 61 of those coming on offense.
INSIDE THE SERIES
The Buffs lead the all-time series 5-2 including a 4-0 record in Canyon. In their last meeting, WT defeated the Hilltoppers, 108-89, to claim their fourth straight LSC Championship title led by former Buff
Qua Grant's 34 point, 12 rebound double-double.
AROUND THE LEAGUE
Lubbock Christian leads the league as the last remaining undefeated program in the LSC with a perfect 19-0 record with seven conference victories. St. Mary's (7-7, 44-1 LSC ranks second in the standings followed by DBU (13-7, 6-2) Texas A&M-Commerce (14-4, 6-3 LSC) and WT (18-4, 5-3 LSC) rounding out the top five.
CLIMBIN' THE LADDER
Zach Toussaint collected a career-high seven 3-pointers on against Midwestern State before posting two against DBU to bring his career total to 181, ranking fifth on the all-time leader board behind Tez Dumars (183). WT All-American David Chavlovich (2014-18) set the all-time career record with 388 threes to the set the program standard.
A LOOK BACK AT DBU
Freshman
Jesse Iweze collected his first collegiate double-double against DBU on Saturday afternoon as WT advanced to 18-4 overall and 5-3 in Lone Star Conference action.
The Roanoke, Texas product becomes just the third Buff this season to record a double-double after posting a career-high 16 points and 12 rebounds to go along with three blocks, assists and steals. Iweze went 7-for-9 from the floor with a pair of free throws while
Zach Toussaint (14) and
Julius Brown (13) each reached double figures.
WT shot 45.2 percent (28-of-62) from the floor, 23.8 percent (5-of-21) from the deep and 73.3 percent (11-of-15) at the charity stripe while the Patriots were 43.6 percent (24-of-55) from the field, 20 percent (5-of-25) from the 3-point line and 70.6 percent (12-of-17) for free throws. Carson Hughes was the game's leading scorer with 17 points to go along with seven rebounds, two assists and four steals.
A LOOK INSIDE THE NUMBERS
WT is outscoring opponents 80.1 to 65.8 with a 14.3 scoring margin as the Buffs are shooting 43.7 percent from the floor including 33.3 percent from the deep and 73.7 percent from the free throw line.
As a team, the Buffs average 40.3 rebounds per game alongside 11.7 assists, 7.1 steals, and 3.7 blocks. Three Buffs average double-figure scoring led by
Zach Toussaint and
Larry Wise combining for 655 points.
Toussaint averages 15.6 points a game to rank seventh in scoring average while standing third with 343 total points. Against Midwestern State, Toussaint became the first player to score 36 points in a single game since 2016 while also becoming just the 14
th player in program history to reach the milestone.
Junior guard
Julius Brown has collected a team-high 52 assists and 28 steals this season while averaging 12.2 ppg.
Kavon Booker has brought down a career-high 135 rebounds (6.1 rpg) this season which is the fifth most in the LSC with 46 of those coming on offense to go along with a team-high 23 blocks.
WT HEAD COACH TOM BROWN
Tom Brown recorded his 199
th career victory with the Buffs conference victory over UT Permian Basin. Brown is now just one game from reaching his 200
th career victory milestone. Brown is in his eighth season at the helm of the Buffs, registering an overall record of 199-47 (.808) with four NCAA Tournament Appearances including the programs first appearance in the National Championship game last season. The two-time LSC Coach of the Year led the Buffs to their fourth consecutive conference tournament championship title.
NABC TOP 25 POLL
WT was one of two members from the Lone Star Conference represented in the rankings as the Buffs dropped to 12
th in the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches Top 25. Lubbock Christian (17-0, 5-0 LSC) remained atop the standings with 15 first-place votes and is one of just two remaining undefeated teams in the national poll. Nova Southeastern (16-0) ranks second with one first-place votes followed Cal State San Bernardino (14-1).
LSC PRESEASON POLL
The four-time defending LSC Champions were picked second after going 19-3 in 2020-21 including the program's first appearance in the National Championship game. WT received 13-of-42 possible first place votes, following the preseason favorite Lubbock Christian with 26. DBU was picked third followed by Texas A&M-Kingsville and St. Edward's in the top five.
Midwestern State was selected sixth followed by Angelo State, Texas A&M-Commerce, UT Tyler, UT Permian Basin, UAFS, St. Mary's, Oklahoma Christian, Eastern New Mexico, Cameron, Texas A&M International and Western New Mexico.
LSC CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Lone Star Conference Championship will take place on March 3-6 with the top 12 teams will qualify for the postseason tournament with the first-round games played on-campus and the remaining eight games in Frisco, Texas at the Comerica Center.
The NCAA South Central Regional Championships are set for March 12-15 followed by the NCAA Elite Eight at the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind.
