CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M men's basketball looks to come back from Thursday's overtime loss as they take on DBU tomorrow afternoon, Jan. 29, with tipoff scheduled for 2 p.m. CT at the Burg Center.
SCOUTING THE PATRIOTS
Dallas Baptist enters Saturday's game 13-6 and 6-1 in league play to rank second in the conference standings behind No. 1 Lubbock Christian. As a team, the Patriots average 74.9 points a game with a 47.0 percent field goal percentage while averaging nine 3-pointers, 30.9 rebounds, 14.4 assists, 8.7 steals and 2.7 blocks a game.
The Patriots are led by 17
th year head coach Dr. Blake Flickner, who has guided the Patriots the NCAA Division II tournament five times in the last six years. Flickner collected his 300
th career victory in yesterday's 89-53 victory over Cameron.
The Patriots are led by Cameron Kahn, who was named the LSC Offensive Player of the Week in week nine. The sophomore guard, has scored 234 points this season averaging 12.3 a game along with 5.4 rebounds.
Sophomore Ricky Lujan has started in all but two games for DBU as the team's second leading scorer averages 11.0 ppg while dishing out a team high 46 assists.
Austin Garner, who has started 12 games for the Patriots, is a threat from beyond the arc totaling a team-high 46 3-pointers. The sophomore from Trophy Club, Texas has scored in double figures 12 times this season including a career-high 23 against Southwestern Oklahoma State.
INSIDE THE SERIES
The Buffs are 6-1 all-time against the Patriots dating back to their first meeting during the 1988-89 season. Thursday's game marks the first meeting between the two programs in Dallas with five of the previous set in Canyon. In their last matchup last season, the Buffs secured a 82-65 victory to advance to the South Central regional championship game.
AROUND THE LEAGUE
Lubbock Christian leads the league as the last remaining undefeated program in the LSC with a perfect 18-0 record with six conference victories. DBU (13-6, 6-1) ranks second in the standings followed by St. Mary's (6-7, 3-1 LSC), Texas A&M-Commerce (13-4, 5-3 LSC) and UAFS (11-8, 5-3 LSC) rounding out the top five.
CLIMBIN' THE LADDER
Zach Toussaint collected a career-high seven 3-pointers on Thursday night to bring he career total to 179, ranking fifth on the all-time leader board behind Tez Dumars. WT All-American David Chavlovich (2014-18) set the all-time career record with 388 threes to the set the program standard.
A LOOK BACK AT MIDWESTERN STATE
The Buffs fell 100-90 in overtime on Thursday night against Midwestern State to move to 17-4 overall and 4-3 in Lone Star Conference play, dropping to seventh in the conference standings.
Toussaint became the first player to score 36 points in a single game since David Chavlovich in December of 2016 against Oklahoma City while becoming just the 14
th player in program history to reach the milestone. The Johnsburg, Ill. went for 11-of-19 from the field and 7-for-7 at the free throw line while posting a career high seven 3-pointers.
WT finished the night 32-of-69 (46.4%) from the field while going 11-of-27 (40.7%) from beyond the arc and 15-of-24 (62.5%) at the charity stripe to go along with 29 rebounds, eight assists, six steals and three blocks.
The Mustangs went 33-of-60 (55.0%) from the floor, 14-of-26 (53.8%) from the deep and 20-of-25 (80.0%) at the free throw line while collecting 44 rebounds, 20 assists, eight steals and nine blocks. Pierre Sanders and Jermane Carter led MSU's offense with 21 points each.
A LOOK INSIDE THE NUMBERS
WT is outscoring opponents 80.5 to 65.9 with a 14.6 scoring margin as the Buffs are shooting 43.7 percent from the floor including 33.6 percent from the deep and 73.7 percent from the free throw line. As a team, the Buffs average 40.2 rebounds per game alongside 11.6 assists, seven steals, and 3.7 blocks.
Three Buffs average double-figure scoring led by
Zach Toussaint and
Larry Wise combining for 632 points. Toussaint averages 15.7 points a game to rank eighth in scoring average while standing third with 329 total points.
Julius Brown has collected a team-high 49 assists and 26 steals this season while averaging 12.2 ppg.
Kavon Booker has brought down a career-high 130 rebounds (6.2 rpg) this season which is the sixth most in the LSC with 45 of those coming on offense to go along with a team-high 23 blocks.
WT HEAD COACH TOM BROWN
Tom Brown recorded his 198
th career victory with the Buffs conference victory over UT Permian Basin. Brown is now just two games from reaching his 200
th career victory milestone. Brown is in his eighth season at the helm of the Buffs, registering an overall record of 198-47 (.808) with four NCAA Tournament Appearances including the programs first appearance in the National Championship game last season. The two-time LSC Coach of the Year led the Buffs to their fourth consecutive conference tournament championship title.
NABC TOP 25 POLL
WT was one of two members from the Lone Star Conference represented in the rankings as the Buffs dropped to 12
th in the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches Top 25. Lubbock Christian (17-0, 5-0 LSC) remained atop the standings with 15 first-place votes and is one of just two remaining undefeated teams in the national poll. Nova Southeastern (16-0) ranks second with one first-place votes followed Cal State San Bernardino (14-1).
LSC PRESEASON POLL
The four-time defending LSC Champions were picked second after going 19-3 in 2020-21 including the program's first appearance in the National Championship game. WT received 13-of-42 possible first place votes, following the preseason favorite Lubbock Christian with 26. DBU was picked third followed by Texas A&M-Kingsville and St. Edward's in the top five.
Midwestern State was selected sixth followed by Angelo State, Texas A&M-Commerce, UT Tyler, UT Permian Basin, UAFS, St. Mary's, Oklahoma Christian, Eastern New Mexico, Cameron, Texas A&M International and Western New Mexico.
LSC CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Lone Star Conference Championship will take place on March 3-6 with the top 12 teams will qualify for the postseason tournament with the first-round games played on-campus and the remaining eight games in Frisco, Texas at the Comerica Center.
The NCAA South Central Regional Championships are set for March 12-15 followed by the NCAA Elite Eight at the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind.
