CANYON, Texas – The No. 8 Buffaloes of West Texas A&M return to the First United Bank Center on Thursday, Jan. 20 when they host Angelo State in a Lone Star Conference matchup sponsored by Medi-Drive Pharmacy.
SCOUTING ANGELO STATE
The Rams come to Canyon 11-4 overall and 1-2 in conference play after splitting a pair of games last weekend with a 75-73 victory over Midwestern State before falling to DBU, 82-69. The Rams overcame a 15-point defecit to come back to defeat the Mustangs led by Dante Moses 17 points.
Five players average double-figures for ASU led by Andi Carroll and Moses. The pair have been the leading scorers for ASU with Carrol totaling 192 points (12.8 ppg) this season and Moses 189 (12.6).
Carroll has collected a conference-high 39 steals to go along with 61 assists which ranks fifth in the LSC. Sophomore Lathaniel Bastian, a 6-foot-8 guard, has brought down 120 rebounds this season picking up eight a game.
INSIDE THE SERIES
WT looks to keep its 12-game win streak alive against the Rams on Thursday as the Buffs lead the all-time series 51-24, including 32 victories in Canyon. Under head coach
Tom Brown WT is 12-3 after recording a pair of victories in last year's abbreviated conference season.
LAST TIME OUT
In their last outing, the Buffs moved to 16-2 overall and 3-1 in LSC play with a 79-67 victory over UT Tyler in just the second meeting between the two programs.
WT shot 49.1 percent (28-of-57) from the field, 27.8 percent (5-of-18) from the three and 72 percent (18-of-25) at the free throw line to go along with 35 rebounds, 14 assists and five steals. The Patriots shot 41.3 percent (19-of-46) from the floor, 30.8 percent (4-of-13) from beyond the arc and 89.3 percent (25-of-28) from the charity stripe led by Zaire Mateen with 11 points.
Larry Wise was the game's leading scorer with 27 points while matching a season-high eight rebounds and six assists. The sophomore shot 9-of-19 from the floor, 2-of-8 from the deep and was 7-of-10 at the free throw line.
CLIMBIN' THE LADDER
Zach Toussaint collected his 170 career 3-pointer against UT Tyler to move him to fifth on the all-time leaderboard, passing passing former Buff Jordan Collins. WT All-American David Chavlovich (201-18) set the all-time career record with 388 threes to the set the program standard.
A LOOK INSIDE THE NUMBERS
The Buffs have a scoring average of 79.8 while limiting opponents to 63.7 for a 16.1 scoring margin with WT shooting 43.3 percent (505-for-1,1166) from the floor including 34.0 (percent 159-for-468) from beyond the arc and 74.9 percent (268-for-358) at the free throw line.
WT ranks first in the LSC with 40.2 rebounds per game alongside 11.9 assists, 7.3 steals, and 3.9 blocks. The Buffs force 15 turnovers per game, scoring 15.9 points off of their opponents' turnovers.

Zach Toussaint is the Buffs leading scorer, totaling 275 points on the season, averaging 15.3 which ranks seventh in the conference.
Larry Wise and
Julius Brown follow Toussaint with each averaging double figures with Wise scoring 14.7 ppg and Brown at 12.4.
On defense,
Kavon Booker has brought down a team-high 106 rebounds (5.9 rpg) for the Buffs to go along with 20 blocks while
Hayden Blankley totals 97 (5.4 rpg).
WT HEAD COACH TOM BROWN
Tom Brown recorded his 197
th career victory with the Buffs conference win over UT Tyler. Brown is now just three games from reaching his 200
th career victory milestone. Brown is in his eighth season at the helm of the Buffs, registering an overall record of 197-45 (.814) with four NCAA Tournament Appearances including the programs first appearance in the National Championship game last season. The two-time LSC Coach of the Year led the Buffs to their fourth consecutive conference tournament championship title.
NABC TOP 25 POLL
WT was one of two members from the Lone Star Conference represented in the rankings as the Buffs jumped to eighth in the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches Top 25. Lubbock Christian (16-0, 4-0 LSC) stayed atop the national standings as one of the last remaining undefeated programs in Division II with Northwest Missouri State and Nova Southeastern staying at second and third. Cal State San Marcos moved to fourth after defeating the previous fourth-ranked Chico State while Cal State San Bernardino moved up to fifth to round out the top five.
LSC PRESEASON POLL
The four-time defending LSC Champions were picked second after going 19-3 in 2020-21 including the program's first appearance in the National Championship game. WT received 13-of-42 possible first place votes, following the preseason favorite Lubbock Christian with 26. DBU was picked third followed by Texas A&M-Kingsville and St. Edward's in the top five.
Midwestern State was selected sixth followed by Angelo State, Texas A&M-Commerce, UT Tyler, UT Permian Basin, UAFS, St. Mary's, Oklahoma Christian, Eastern New Mexico, Cameron, Texas A&M International and Western New Mexico.
