Mattio Named the Head Coach at Northern Colorado

CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M's Kristen Mattio has accepted the women's basketball head coaching position at the University of Northern Colorado. UNC is an NCAA Division I member of the Big Sky Conference in Greeley, Colorado.

Mattio continued the storied tradition of Lady Buff Basketball as she recently concluded her sixth season at the helm of West Texas A&M in 2020-21. She registering an overall record of 154-35 during her time in Canyon for a winning percentage of 81.5% as the Nashville native became the fastest head coach in program history to reach the 150-win plateau.
 
The two-time Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year led the Lady Buffs to five NCAA Tournament appearances including an 80-18 mark in league action to claim four regular season LSC Championships along with two tournament crowns. West Texas A&M has made three appearances in the South Central Regional Title Game over the last six seasons with a trip to the 2016-17 NCAA National Quarterfinals. The Lady Buffs claimed 20 All-Conference honors during Mattio's tenure while also excelling in the classroom with six players earning Academic All-Conference honors.
 
Mattio was named the head coach of the Lady Buffs on May 12, 2015 following two seasons as the program's top assistant, the Lady Buffs went 62-6 with two Elite Eight trips and an appearance in the 2014 NCAA Division II National Championship Game. WT won two Lone Star Conference regular season and tournament titles while also winning a pair of South Central Regional Championships.
 
A national search for the sixth head coach in program history will begin immediately.
