CANYON, Texas – The #22 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M begin their postseason run on Thursday afternoon as they look to avenge an early season loss to the St. Edward's Hilltoppers in the quarterfinal round of the 2020 Lone Star Conference Championship at the Comerica Center in Frisco with tipoff set for 2:30 p.m.

ST. EDWARD'S
The Hilltoppers are guided by eighth year head coach J.J. Riehl who has led St. Edward's to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances (2014, 2017). Riehl was named the sixth head coach in program history back in 2012, returning to her alma mater.

SEU enters the weekend with an overall record of 18-10 as they finished their first season of Lone Star Conference action with a mark of 13-9.

The Hilltoppers forced 24 turnovers that led to 28 points on Tuesday night as they overpowered the Arkansas-Fort Smith Lady Lions during the opening round of the LSC Championships at the Recreation and Convocation Center in Austin. Deijah Blanks led the way for the Toppers with 30 points and eight rebounds in the win.

Blanks, a UC Irvine graduate transfer, leads the way offensively for the Toppers, going 202-of-458 (44.1%) from the floor including 128-of-173 (74%) from the free throw line to average 20.5 points per game to go along with 5.5 rebounds per contest.

WT HEAD COACH KRISTEN MATTIO
Kristen Mattio has continued the storied tradition of Lady Buff Basketball as she enters her fifth season at the helm of the West Texas A&M in 2019-20. Mattio has registering an overall record of 138-28 during her time in Canyon for a winning percentage of 83.1% as the Nashville native is the second fastest head coach in program history to reach the 100-win plateau with a 95-78 decision at Cameron on February 2, 2019.
NEXSTAR BROADCASTINGÂ AGREEMENT
The Lone Star Conference and Nexstar Broadcasting announced on Wednesday afternoon that the two parties have reached an agreement to broadcast the 2020 Lone Star Conference Basketball Championship on local television across the LSC's coverage network. Amarillo's KCPN-LC station owned by Mission Broadcasting will carry each contest on Suddenlink Channel 7.

SOUTH CENTRAL REGIONAL RANKINGS (MAR. 4)
The Lady Buffs moved up one spot to second in this week's edition of the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball South Central Regional Rankings announced on Wednesday afternoon by the NCAA headquarters in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Lubbock Christian jumped to the top spot followed by West Texas A&M, Texas A&M-Commerce, Colorado Mesa, Western Colorado, Westminster, Angelo State, Tarleton, Eastern New Mexico and St. Edward's.

WBCA DIVISION II TOP-25 POLL (MAR. 3)
Drury remained atop of the poll as they picked up 14 of the possible 23 first place votes for 566 points followed by Ashland (nine first place, 561), Hawaii Pacific (514), Grand Valley State (503), Alaska Anchorage (482), Lubbock Christian (449), Indiana, Pa. (434), Adelphi (402), Walsh (360) and Texas A&M-Commerce (344) to round out the top ten.

The South Central Region was represented by Lubbock Christian (6th), Texas A&M-Commerce (10th), West Texas A&M (22nd) and Colorado Mesa (RV).

LADY BUFFS IN THE LSC CHAMPIONSHIP
The Lady Buffs are entering the Lone Star Conference Championship for the 27th straight campaign and the 32nd overall time which is the most of any LSC institutions. WT is 56-16 all-time at the LSC Championship for a winning percentage of 77.8% which is also tops among the league.Â

The Lady Buffs have made 22 appearances in the Title Game with 15 Championships since 1987 as they have claimed the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Postseason each of the last two seasons.

MOVING ON UP
Senior guard
Megan Gamble has been making her way up the career assists list at WT as the Omaha product now sits fifth all-time with 431 for an average of 4.5 per game. She currently sits just 44 assists behind
Sasha Watson (2013-17) who sits fourth with 475.

DEFENSIVE PRESSURE
The Lady Buffs have allowed an average of 50.0 points per game this season which leads the Lone Star Conference and enters the week ranking fourth in all of Division II Women's Basketball. WT allowed a season-low 26 points to Adams State on November 29th in Canyon, becoming the sixth lowest opponent point total in program history. WT has also held an opponent scoreless in a quarter on two different occasions this season.

WINNING TRADITION
The 2019-20 season marks the eighth-straight year of 20 or more wins for the Lady Buffs. WT won 30 or more games in 2013-14 and 2014-15 and have 30 wins in six seasons since 1980-81. The Lady Buffs have not had a losing season since 1980-81 and have won 20 or more games in 29 seasons during that span with a string of nine-straight from 1983-1992.

BLOCK PARTY
The Lady Buffs currently rank second in all of NCAA Division II Women's Basketball with 193 blocked shots on the season to average 6.2 per contest which ranks third in the nation.
Abby Spurgin is sixth in the country with 84 total blocks this season followed by teammate
Tiana Parker (67) in 11th. Spurgin has surpassed her 2018-19 block total which is sixth most by a Lady Buff in a single-season with Alicia Saunders (2005-06) holding the LSC and program record with 134 in a single-season.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME FINALIST
West Texas A&M's all-time winningest head women's basketball coach Bob Schneider has been tabbed a finalist for the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame for the second straight year.

In 43 seasons as a head coach at Darrouzett High School, McLean High School, Canyon High School, Texas Woman's University and West Texas A&M, Schneider racked up an incredible 1,045 wins. His greatest success came in the Canyon community where he led the CHS Lady Eagles to five State Championships and delivered nine Lone Star Conference Championships at the helm of the Lady Buffs.

Schneider was a six-time recipient of the Lone Star Conference Coach of Year Award during his time in Canyon as he finished his 25-year career at WT with an overall record of 585-163 (.784) including an incredible 237-47 (.836) mark in league action. He led the Lady Buffs to nine Lone Star Conference Championships, eight LSC Tournament Titles and three Regional Championships. Schneider coached nine All-American honorees during his time in Canyon.

NEW LOOK LSC
The Lone Star Conference welcomes seven new women's basketball members for the 2019-20 campaign with Lubbock Christian, Oklahoma Christian, St. Edward's, St. Mary's, Texas A&M International, Arkansas-Fort Smith and UT Tyler. The league will now be comprised of three six-team divisions as each institution will play a home/away contest against each of the other teams within their division, and a single game versus the other 12 conference opponents.

Divisional champions and seeding for the LSC Championship will be determined by winning percentage within each division and by using overall league winning percentage and head-to-head matchups as tie-breakers. The LSC Championship returns to Frisco, Texas and the Comerica Center on March 5-8.

LAST TIME OUT
West Texas A&M ended their regular season schedule on a high-note on Saturday afternoon as a big second half lifted the #25 Lady Buffs to an 80-46 Lone Star Conference crossover victory against the Cameron Aggies on Senior Day.

The Lady Buffs were led by
Abby Spurgin who went 7-of-10 from the floor including 5-of-6 from the free throw to lead all players with 19 points to go along with eight rebounds and five blocks,
Nathalie Linden (13) and
Tiana Parker (10) chipped in double-figures while
Megan Gamble dished out 10 assists in the three student-athlete's final game at the First United Bank Center.

Cameron was led offensively by Maighan Hedge who went 4-of-8 from the floor including 2-of-3 from deep and a perfect 2-of-2 from the free throw line to register a team-leading 12 points, Stephanie Peterson added seven points for the Aggies while grabbing five rebounds to go along with one assists and two steals.

WT went 28-of-61 (45.9%) from the floor including 6-of-21 (28.6%) from behind the arc and 18-of-28 (64.3%) from the charity stripe with 44 total rebounds (13 offensive, 31 defensive), 21 assists, 13 turnovers, 10 steals and six blocks in the win.

The Aggies finished the afternoon going 18-of-56 (32.1%) from the field including 4-of-20 (20%) from deep and 6-of-10 (60%) from the free throw line with 33 rebounds (nine offensive, 24 defensive), seven assists, 22 turnovers, eight steals and no blocks.
