#16 Lady Buffs Head to Austin for Lone Star Conference Action

CANYON, Texas –
 The #16 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M jump back into Lone Star Conference action on Thursday night as they head to the state capital to take on the St. Edward's Hilltoppers with tipoff scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at the Recreation and Convocation Center in Austin.
 
ST. EDWARD'S
The Hilltoppers are guided by eighth year head coach J.J. Riehl who has led St. Edward's to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances (2014, 2017). Riehl was named the sixth head coach in program history back in 2012, returning to her alma mater.
 
SEU enters the week with an overall record of 5-2 with a 1-1 mark in their inaugural season of Lone Star Conference action following an 80-55 non-conference loss to #12 Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday afternoon in Austin. The Toppers finished their 2018-19 campaign with an overall record of 16-14 with a 7-7 mark in the final season of the Heartland Conference as they advanced to the second round of the Heartland Conference Championship.
 
UC Irvine graduate transfer Deijah Blanks leads the way offensively for the Toppers, going 41-of-99 (41.4%) from the floor including 24-of-30 (80%) from the free throw line to average 16.0 points and 4.1 rebounds per contest.
 
WT HEAD COACH KRISTEN MATTIO
Kristen Mattio has continued the storied tradition of Lady Buff Basketball as she enters her fifth season at the helm of the West Texas A&M in 2019-20. Mattio has registering an overall record of 120-25 during her time in Canyon for a winning percentage of 82.8% as the Nashville native is the second fastest head coach in program history to reach the 100-win plateau with a 95-78 decision at Cameron on February 2, 2019.
 
WINNING TRADITION
The 2018-19 season marked the seventh-straight year of 20 or more wins for the Lady Buffs. WT won 30 or more games in 2013-14 and 2014-15 and have 30 wins in six seasons since 1980-81. The Lady Buffs have not had a losing season since 1980-81 and have won 20 or more games in 28 seasons during that span with a string of nine-straight from 1983-1992.
 
WBCA DIVISION II TOP-25 POLL (DEC. 10)
Drury picked up 13 of the possible 23 first place votes to remain atop of the poll with 563 points followed by Lubbock Christian (10 first place, 558), Grand Valley State (526), Ashland (483), Lee (477), Saint Anslem (459), Sioux Falls (403), Azusa Pacific (374), Virginia Union (364) and Texas A&M-Commerce (350) to round out the top ten.
 
The South Central Region was represented by Lubbock Christian (2nd), Texas A&M-Commerce (10th), West Texas A&M (16th) and Westminster (17th).
 
HOME SWEET HOME
West Texas A&M is home to one of the finest multi-purpose facilities in the country as the First United Bank Center has served as the home of the Lady Buffs since January 26, 2002. The Lady Buffs are a staggering 222-32 inside of the FUBC during that time for a winning clip of 87.4%. 
 
WT has averaged 1,0721 fans per contest since the facility opened its doors with the largest crowd coming on Opening Night with 4,941 members of Buff Nation seeing the Lady Buffs take on rival Abilene Christian.
 
MOVING ON UP
Senior guard Megan Gamble has been making her way up the career assists list at West Texas A&M as the Omaha product now sits seventh all-time with 328 for an average of 4.40 per game. She is just 64 assists away from Vanessa Wells (1983-87) who ranks sixth with 392.
 
DEFENSIVE PRESSURE
The Lady Buffs have allowed an average of 51.1 points per game this season which leads the Lone Star Conference and ranks ninth in all of Division II Women's Basketball. WT allowed a season-low 26 points to Adams State on November 29th in Canyon, becoming the sixth lowest opponent point total in program history. The Lady Buffs also rank third in the country in blocked shots with 58 to average an impressive 5.8 per contest.
 
LSC BASKETBALL PRESEASON POLL
The defending LSC Champion Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M have been picked second in the 2019-20 LSC Women's Basketball Preseason Poll while senior guard Lexy Hightower earned Preseason Player of the Year honors.
 
Defending National Champion Lubbock Christian picked up 33 of the possible 54 first place votes for a total of 813 points to sit atop of the poll followed by West Texas A&M (14 first place, 787), Angelo State (one first place, 733), Texas A&M-Commerce (two first place, 667) and Tarleton (two first place, 645) to round out the top five. 
 
Eastern New Mexico (one first place, 617) ranked sixth followed by St. Mary's (550), Midwestern State (456), St. Edward's (448), Texas Woman's (407), Arkansas-Fort Smith (one first place, 339), Oklahoma Christian (301), Texas A&M-Kingsville (288), Cameron (284), Western New Mexico (222), UT Permian Basin (172), UT Tyler (171) and Texas A&M International (76).
 
NEW LOOK LSC
The Lone Star Conference welcomes seven new women's basketball members for the 2019-20 campaign with Lubbock Christian, Oklahoma Christian, St. Edward's, St. Mary's, Texas A&M International, Arkansas-Fort Smith and UT Tyler. The league will now be comprised of three six-team divisions as each institution will play a home/away contest against each of the other teams within their division, and a single game versus the other 12 conference opponents.
 
Divisional champions and seeding for the LSC Championship will be determined by winning percentage within each division and by using overall league winning percentage and head-to-head matchups as tie-breakers. The LSC Championship returns to Frisco, Texas and the Comerica Center on March 5-8.
 
LAST TIME OUT
The #17 West Texas A&M Lady Buffs had another strong defensive effort on Thursday night as they held the Oklahoma Panhandle State Aggies scoreless for almost nine minutes while forcing 26 turnovers as WT picked up their eighth straight victory, 91-37 in front of over 600 fans at the First United Bank Center in Canyon.
 
The Lady Buffs were led offensively by Braylyn Dollar who finished the night going 10-of-12 from the floor and 4-of-5 from the free throw line for career-high 24 points followed by Abby Spurgin with 15 to go along with nine rebounds to finish just shy of a double-double. Delaney Nix dished out a team-high six assists while Tiana Parker rejected three shots to go along with 12 points and seven boards.
 
The Aggies were led by Vanessa Gonzales, Shay Audrin and Naomi Rodriguez with six points each, Lowendie Laporal led the way defensively with four rebounds to go along with two points and a block while Kaylee Morgan dished out three assists in the loss.
 
WT finished the game going 36-of-66 (54.5%) from the field including 2-of-17 (11.8%) from deep and 17-of-23 (73.9%) from the charity stripe with 48 rebounds (17 offensive, 31 defensive), 18 assists, 18 turnovers, 15 steals and six blocks in the win.
 
The Aggies went 13-of-52 (25%) from the floor including 7-of-24 (29.2%) from behind the arc and a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line with 23 rebounds (seven offensive, 16 defensive), six assists, 26 turnovers, four steals and three blocks.
