#10 Lady Buffs Make it Nine Straight, Outlast the Comets on the Road

CANYON, Texas – The #10 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M ran their win streak to nine games on Saturday afternoon as they picked up a 73-62 Lone Star Conference victory over the UT Dallas Comets at the UTD Activity Center in Richardson, Texas.
 
WT opened the quarter with strong offensive play, establishing an early lead with Taylor Haggan's layup at 8:39 and jumper at 7:19. The team capitalized on second-chance opportunities, outscoring UT Dallas 8–0 in second-chance points, and controlled the paint with an 8–4 advantage. Despite the initial momentum, the Comets responded with a series of 3-pointers, overtaking the Lady Buffs midway through the quarter. The visitors closed the gap with Kenadee Winfrey's three-pointer at 1:42, bringing the Lady Buffs within one point at 16-15.
 
In the second quarter, the Lady Buffs gained momentum early with Haggan's layup at 9:46, tying the game at 17. Haggan continued to impact the paint, scoring multiple times and contributing to a series of lead changes. Winfrey and Karley Motschenbacher each added to the scoring, with Motschenbacher's steal at 6:26 setting up another Lady Buffs opportunity. Randi Harding's clutch free throws at 2:26 helped the team regain a slim lead. Despite a late push from UTD, including a jumper with five seconds remaining, the Lady Buffs maintained focus. Harding sealed the quarter with two free throws at 36 seconds, closing it with a 31-30 edge.
 
The Lady Buffs began the third quarter with a strong offensive push, highlighted by Haggan's offensive rebound and layup, quickly followed by Motschenbacher's layup to extend the lead. WT dominated the paint with 16 points and capitalized on fast breaks for 6 points, effectively outpacing UT Dallas. The momentum continued as Henley West and Claire Graham contributed to maintaining the scoring advantage. Defensive efforts were bolstered by Winfrey's block and multiple steals by the team, keeping UTD's scoring in check. The Lady Buffs ended the quarter with a decisive 21–15 advantage, leading 52–45 heading into the final quarter.
 
The Lady Buffs began the fourth quarter with a strong showing, highlighted by Abbi Holder's 3-pointer at 9:46, assisted by Graham, setting the pace early. WT held momentum with effective defensive rebounds and timely steals, extending their lead with a fast break layup by Winfrey at 6:38, pushing the score to 62-49. As the quarter progressed, the Lady Buffs continued to capitalize on turnovers and offensive rebounds. Harding contributed by converting free throws at 1:22, further securing the lead. The quarter concluded with a jumper by Graham with 12 seconds remaining, ending the game 73-62 in favor of the Lady Buffs
 
Haggan led with 19 points and collected 10 rebounds, making 9 of 12 field goals. Winfrey recorded three steals and added seven points, contributing six rebounds. Harding posted 10 points and converted all six of her free throws. Motschenbacher added 10 points while collecting eight rebounds and two steals.
 
The Lady Buffs close out the calendar year on December 18-19 at the Hoops in Hawaii Classic with matchups against #23 Ferris State and host Hawaii Pacific.
