No. 5 Buffs Blast Way to Third-Straight Lone Star Conference Title Game

THE BASICS:
 
  • Score: #5 West Texas A&M 24, Eastern New Mexico 2

  • The Lead: Behind a season-high 24 runs and a season-high 21 hits, the No. 5 West Texas A&M baseball team blitzed Eastern New Mexico in a 24-2 win at Wilder Park in the second semifinal of the Lone Star Conference Tournament.  The top-seeded Buffs moved onto their third-straight Lone Star Conference title game Saturday at 3 p.m. versus No. 2-seed Tarleton State. 
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • It didn't take long for the Buffs to get on the board in the bottom of the first inning as senior Bodie Bryan began the game with a single to center followed by a single and error from senior Jimmy Cubillos for a 1-0 lead.Senior Nick Canas singled and later scored on a ground out for a 2-0 lead and senior Brandon Marrero singled up the middle, plating senior Luis Amaro for a 3-0 lead.
  • In the bottom of the second, junior Justice Nakagawa hit a triple to dead center and scored on a Bryan sacrifice fly for a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second.
  • With two on in the bottom of the third, junior Tag Baxter laced a triple off the center field wall for a 6-0 lead and a double from senior Brandon Marrero swelled the lead to 7-0.Nakagawa added a RBI single for an 8-0 lead.
  • ENMU's Garland Webster broke up a string of seven-straight retired by WT junior hurler Joe Corbett for a solo home run to begin the top of the fourth and an 8-1 WT lead.It was just the second hit of the game to that point for the Greyhounds.
  • Amaro belted his league-leading 15th home run of the season for a 10-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth to dead center field.Sophomore Darius Carter singled to center for a RBI and an 11-1 lead.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, junior Tag Baxter hit a two RBI single for a 13-1 lead.Freshman Tommy Williams drilled a triple to left center for two RBI and a 15-1 lead.Williams scored on double to the gap for a 16-1 score.
  • ENMU used a RBI single from Malcolm Smith for a 16-2 score in the top of the seventh.
  • WT added six more runs in the seventh and two in the eighth for a 24-2 lead.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • The Buffs scored in seven of the eight innings the team batted, scoring a game-high six runs in the seventh.
  • Two different Buffs each had four hits in the game as Nakagawa was 4 for 4 with three runs scored and three RBI, including a double and a triple, while Baxter went 4 for 6 with three runs scored and a career-high seven RBI, including two doubles and a triple.
  • Amaro, Bryan and senior Nelson Paredes each had home runs for the Buffs.
  • Senior Joe Corbett picked up his school-record-tying tenth win of the season (10-2) going seven innings, allowing six hits, two earned runs, walked none and fanned eight.
  • Webster had three hits with a run scored and a RBI for the Greyhounds who ended their season at 24-24.
  • WT tallied its school-record 39th win of the season and 25th home win of the year as the Buffs have at least one more home game (Saturday) to try to match the school-record for home victories.
  • A total of 11 different Buffs had hits in the game and six had multi-hit games.
  • WT will be going for a three-peat in the winning conference tournament championships for the first since Abilene Christian won three-straight from 2000-2002.
  • The Buffs improved to 11-14 all-time in the LSC Championship and 11-9 all-time under tenth-year head coach Matt Vanderburg.
