No. 7/8 Buffs Sweep Twin Bill from Cameron; Run Winning Streak to School-Record 11 Games

THE BASICS:
 
  • Score: West Texas A&M 10-12, Cameron 5-2
 
  • Records: West Texas A&M 28-7, 10-0 LSC, Cameron 15-22, 5-9 LSC)
 
  • Location: Canyon, Texas (Wilder Park)
 
  • The Lead: Returning to the field for the first time in 15 days, the No. 7/8 West Texas A&M baseball team showed no ill effects from the time off as it posted a pair of 10-5 and 12-2 victories over visiting Cameron in the first two games of a four game series at Wilder Park Sunday afternoon.  The league-leading Buffs improved to 10-0 in Lone Star Conference play and ran their winning streak to a school-record 11 games.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game One):
 
  • In the bottom of the second, junior Christian Loya took Cameron starting pitcher Reid Garrett deep to left center for a 1-0 lead for his sixth home run of the season.
  • On a 3-2 count with two out, junior Justice Nakagawa took Garrett deep to left center for a three run home run and a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second.
  • In the top of the third, a double from Luke Hughes and a single to right put runners at the corners for the Aggies with one out.
  • A 43 ground out plated the first run of the game for the Aggies in the top of the third and the second out of the inning.Cole Williams scored two runs with a two-run home run to left center for a 4-3 WT lead and his sixth home run of the year.
  • Loya belted his second home run of the game and seventh of the season - a solo shot to left for a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the third.
  • Nakagawa begin the bottom of the fourth with a double and senior Bodie Bryan replaced him with a ground-rule double, followed by a two RBI single from senior Jimmy Cubillos for a 7-3 WT lead. A bloop-double to short left field kept the inning alive as the Buffs loaded the bases as sophomore Darius Carter belted a double off the left field wall plating three runs for a 10-3 lead.
  • Cameron loaded the bases in the top of the fifth and scored on a wild pitch with two out for a 10-4 WT lead and a fly out to center ended the inning.
  • Briton Schiewe began the top of the sixth with a home run to right off WT senior reliever Philip Muldrow for a 10-5 WT lead.The Aggies got two walks and a strikeout as WT made a move to the bullpen in favor of junior Braden Baker replacing Muldrow.Baker got the Buffs out of the jam with no further damage.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (Game One):
 
  • For the first game, WT had 10 runs on 13 hits with no errors and ran its winning streak to a school-record 10 games.
  • Cameron had five runs on six hits with three errors.
  • Five different Buffs had two hits each in the game with Nakagawa going 2 for 3 with three RBI, a home run and two runs scored, while Loya went 2 for 3 with two RBI and three runs scored, including two home runs.
  • Larison (5-0) went five innings, allowing five hits, four earned runs, walked two and fanned eight.
  • Garrett (6-3) went six innings, allowing 10 runs – nine earned, walked two and fanned four as he went the distance.
  • The game saw five home runs between the two teams with three from the Buffs.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game Two):
 
  • A single and hit batsmen, with nobody out, began the second game for the Aggies, followed by a sacrifice bunt up the first base line for runners at second and third.
  • Williams singled to right plating two runs for a 2-0 lead off WT junior starter Joe Corbett.
  • WT put two once again in the bottom of the second with one out and Nakagawa singled through the left side for a 2-1 score on a 3-2 count.
  • Cubillos was called out looking at pitch inside with the tying run at third in the bottom of the second to end the inning.
  • A two out double from senior Brandon Marrero put runners at second and third in the bottom of the third for the Buffs and a hit batsmen loaded the bases.
  • Freshman Tommy Williams came up with a two RBI single to center for a 3-2 WT lead.
  • With two out in the bottom of the fifth, Bryan belted a three-run home run for his fourth round-tripper of the season and a 6-2 WT lead.
  • Cobett struck out the side in the sixth for his eighth strikeout of the game.
  • Bryan singled to right plating a run for a 7-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh and senior Luis Amaro singled through the right side for a RBI and an 8-2 lead.The Buffs plated four more runs in the frame to use the run-rule for a 12-2 win as the Buffs batted around in the frame.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (Game Two):
 
  • WT tallied 12 runs on 17 hits with no errors, while Cameron scored the first two runs of the game and that was it for the Aggies with six hits and no errors.
  • Bryan went 2 for 4 with four RBI and two runs scored, while Cubillos went 3 for 5 in the nightcap with a run scored and a RBI.
  • Williams went a team-high 4 of 5 with three RBI and a run scored.
  • Corbett pitched all seven innings, allowing six hits, two earned runs, walked none and fanned nine as he improved to 7-1 on the year.
  • For the doubleheader, WT hit .448 with 30 hits in 67 at bats, scoring 22 runs with six doubles, one triple, four home runs and 21 RBI.The team slugged .746 and reached base at a .532 clip with six walks and six hit batsmen.
  • WT held Cameron to a .240 clip on 12 of 50, while allowing seven runs with four doubles and two home runs.The Buffs fanned the Aggies 20 times in the doubleheader.

  • The Buffs and Aggies will conclude the series with a doubleheader Monday beginning at 1 p.m. at Wilder Park.
