League-Leading No. 7/8 Buffs Sweep Cameron for 13th-Straight Victory

THE BASICS:
 
  • Score: West Texas A&M 9-12, Cameron 2-2
 
  • Records: West Texas A&M 30-7, 12-0 LSC, Cameron 15-24, 5-11 LSC)
 
  • Location: Canyon, Texas (Wilder Park)
 
  • The Lead: The No. 7/8 West Texas A&M baseball team swept a four-game series from Cameron with a doubleheader sweep Monday as the Buffs won the opener 9-2 and the nightcap 12-2, running its school-record winning streak to 13 games.  The Buffs won their 30th game of the season as they have won 30 or more games each of the last six seasons.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game One):
 
  • Cameron put two on with a hit batsmen and a walk in the first inning, but was unable to score as WT junior pitcher Darin Cook got two strikeouts and a ground out to end the threat.
  • Two quick singles from seniors Bodie Bryan and Jimmy Cubillos, followed by a two RBI double off the left field wall from senior Luis Amaro put WT up 2-0 with nobody out in the first.Senior Nick Canas put WT up 3-0 with a single up the middle.The Buffs added a fourth run as all nine batters came to bat in the inning for a 4-0 lead.
  • WT used a sacrifice fly from Amaro for a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the second.
  • Cameron got on the board with a leadoff home run from Briton Schiewe in the top of the fourth for a 5-1 score.
  • Amaro put a two run double in the left center gap for a 7-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth and scored on a fielder's choice for an 8-1 lead.
  • Freshman Tommy Williams doubled and scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth for a 9-1 lead.
  • An error and infield single led to the second run for Cameron and a 9-2 deficit in the top of the sixth with two out.
  • Junior Andrew Schwulst pitched the top of the seventh, walking one to end the game.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (Game One):
 
  • WT tallied nine runs on 13 hits with one error, while Cameron had two runs on six hits with two errors.
  • Amaro went 2 for 3 with two runs scored and five RBI, while Bryan was 3 for 4 with three runs scored.
  • Junior Darin Cook went six innings, allowing six hits, two runs – one earned, walked one and fanned nine as he improved to 7-1 on the year.
  • The win marked the 12th-straight for WT to that point, improving on the school-record.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game Two):
 
  • Cameron put two on with a walk and a single in the top of the first and scored on a ground out to shortstop for a 1-0 lead.
  • Doubles from Canas and sophomore Darius Carter tied the game at one in the bottom of the second for the Buffs.
  • WT junior pitcher Drew Mescher bested Colton Adams in a ten pitch at bat with two on for the Aggies in the top of the third to get out of the jam preserving the tie score.
  • Following a single up the middle to begin the bottom of the third, Bryan belted his fifth home run of the season for a 3-1 WT lead.Amaro belted his tenth home run of the season for a 4-1 lead with a long shot to right center for a 4-1 lead.
  • Carter hit a ground-rule-double and scored on a single up the middle from senior Nelson Paredes for a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth as the winds really began to pick up.Bryan tripled to right plating two more runs for a 7-1 score and senior Jimmy Cubillos singled home a run through the right side for an 8-1 lead – all with nobody out in the frame.
  • Amaro became the sixth-straight Buff to reach base by way of a hit, putting runners at the corners.Canas doubled to center plating the ninth run of the game for the Buffs with one away.Carter doubled home two runs for an 11-1 lead and a change at pitcher for the Aggies.
  • Cameron scored on a RBI single through the left side, with one out in the top of the fifth from Albert Moralobo for an 11-2 WT lead.
  • Canas doubled home the 12th run of the game for the Buffs in the bottom of the fifth.
  • Senior Noah Draper replaced Mesecher for the top of the sixth as Mesecher went five innings, allowing six hits, two earned runs, walked three and fanned three earning his first win of the season (1-0).
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (Game Two):
 
  • The Buffs had 12 runs on 18 hits, while Cameron scored two runs on six hits.
  • Carter went 4 for 4 with a run scored and three RBI, while Bryan was 2 for 4 with two runs scored, four RBI, a home run and a triple, while Amaro went 3 for 4 with three runs scored and a RBI.
  • WT now has won 30 or more games ten times since 1994 and head coach Matt Vanderburg won his 30th game in season for the seventh time in his ten-year career at WT and sixth-straight.
  • For the twin bill, Canas went 6 of 8 with three runs scored, five doubles and four RBI, while Carter was 6 of 8 with a run scored, three doubles and four RBI.
  • Amaro went 5 of 7 with five runs scored, two doubles, one home run and six RBI.
 
 
UP NEXT:
 
  • The Buffs return to the road at Tarleton State this coming weekend for a four-game conference series against the Texans.
  • WT and Tarleton State are the top two teams in the LSC right now as WT is 12-0 in league play and Tarleton State is 12-4.
