No. 6 Buffs Struggle Offensively in 4-1 Loss at Tarleton State; Winning Streak Snapped at 13

THE BASICS:
 
  • Score: Tarleton State 4, #6 West Texas A&M 1
 
  • Records: West Texas A&M 30-8, 12-1 LSC, Tarleton State 28-13, 13-4 LSC)

  • The Lead: The No.6 West Texas A&M baseball team struggled offensively to the tune of just three hits in a 4-1 loss at Tarleton State to open a four-game, Lone Star Conference series between the top two teams in the conference Friday afternoon.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • Reigning LSC Player of the Week, senior Bodie Bryan singled to left to begin the game and stole second, but the Buffs were unable to score.
  • In the bottom of the first, Blake Adams blasted his LSC-leading 13th home run of the season for a 1-0 lead off WT junior Joe Corbett.
  • Tarleton State went ahead 2-0 in the third as Adams began the frame with an infield single and scored on a sacrifice fly.
  • WT, who hadn't had a base runner since Bryan in the first, loaded the bases with nobody out on a pair of walks and junior Christian Loya was hit by a pitch in the fourth.
  • Senior Nick Canas got the Buffs on the board with a ground out to second, plating senior Jimmy Cubillos for a 2-1 score as the Buffs left two in scoring position and three for the game to that point.
  • TSU starter Conner Fletcher retired nine-straight before the walks to open the fourth.
  • In the fifth, TSU added its third run of the game as a WT miscue allowed Ruben Rodriguez to reach to begin the inning.He later scored on a single to center from Luke Morton for a 3-1 score.
  • WT had another great chance in the sixth as Loya was hit again with a pitch with two out and Canas tallied the second hit of the game for the Buffs, but it went for not, as Fletcher fanned his 11th Buff of the game to end the inning, stranding two Buffs.WT had stranded five in the game to that point and four in scoring positon.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, Adams recorded his third hit of the game and another infield single and stole second.
  • Rodriguez singled to center, plating Adams for a 4-1 score.
  • Reigning LSC Pitcher of the Week Connor Flanagan replaced Fletcher to begin the eighth as Fletcher went seven innings, allowing one run, two hits, walked two and fanned 12.
  • Bryan began the eighth with a walk and stole second for his second theft of the game. Flanagan retired three-straight as the Buffs were 1 of 11 with runners on and 0-10 with runners in position to that point.
  • Corbett retired the Texans in order in the eighth sending WT to its last at bat in the ninth.
  • TSU brought in closer Eddie Avila for the ninth as he leads the nation in saves with ten.Avila retired Canas to being the inning, but junior Tag Baxter doubled to right with one out.
  • Avila fanned sophomore Darius Carter for the second out, but freshman Tommy Williams was hit by a pitch keeping the inning alive and brining the tying run to the plate.
  • Junior pinch-hitter Henry Hausman replaced junior Justice Nakagawa in the lineup, but Avila got Hausman looking to end the game.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • The Buffs tallied one run on three hits with two errors leading to one unearned run in the game, while Tarleton State had four runs on nine hits with no errors.
  • WT stranded eight in the game, while TSU left six on base.
  • The Buffs had their 13-game winning streak snapped and had a string of five-straight games with double-digit hits snapped.
  • Corbett fell to 7-2 in a complete game effort, allowing four runs – three earned, walked one and fanned five.
  • Fletcher improved to 6-1 on the year, while Avila earned his 11th save.
  • Baxter had the lone extra-base hit for the Buffs in the game, while Bryan had one hit and two stolen bases.
  • TSU fanned WT 14 times in the contest as Adams was 3 for 4 with three runs scored and a RBI to lead the Texans with a home run.
  • Rodriguez went 2 for 4 with a run scored and a RBI, while Morton had two RBI on a 1 of 3 performance.
  • The game saw just two extra-base hits with Baxter and Adams having each.
  • After hitting a season-best .466 against Cameron last week, WT opened the TSU series hitting just .100 against TSU (3-30), while going 0 for 12 with runners in position and 1 of 13 with runners on base.
