Hitting Woes Continue in No. 6 Buffs’ 7-3 Loss at Tarleton State

THE BASICS:

  • Score: Tarleton State 7, #6 West Texas A&M 3

  • Records: West Texas A&M 30-9, 12-2 LSC, Tarleton State 29-13, 14-4 LSC)

  • Location: Stephenville, Texas (Cecil Ballow Complex)

  • The Lead: Tarleton State scored six runs in the middle three innings for a 7-3 win over No. 6 West Texas A&M Saturday afternoon for a 2-0 series lead.  The teams will play a doubleheader Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. to conclude the series.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Tarleton State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Blake Adams again began the game with a solo home run.  He leads the LSC in home runs with 14.
  • The Buffs tied the game in the top of the third as junior Justice Nakagawa tripled to right and scored on a senior Jimmy Cubillos single up the middle for a 1-1 score.
  • TSU's Jake Hasbrouck began the bottom of the fourth with a double to center and later scored on a wild pitch after WT made a change on the mound as junior Dominic Yearego replaced senior starter Ryan Larison.
  • A three-run home run from Francisco Rodriguez gave TSU a 5-1 lead in the fifth as the Texans added two more runs in the sixth on a sacrifice fly and a home run by Luke Morton.
  • WT came back with two runs in the seventh with two out as junior Christian Loya reached on a wild pitch on strike three, followed by a junior Tag Baxter single to right and a walk to freshman Tommy Williams to load the bases.
  • Sophomore Darius Carter singled through the left side for the first run of the frame and senior Bodie Bryan walked for the second.
  • Conner Flanagan replaced starter Evan Pontley who got Cubillos to fly out to center ending the threat as the Buffs left the bags full.
  • WT, once again, put two on in the eighth with two out on a walk to senior Nick Canas and a single from Baxter.  A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring positon.
  • Williams was plunked with the Flanagan offering to load the bases once again bringing the potential tying run to the plate.
  • TSU brought in closer Eddie Avila to try to get out of the jam as he recorded his national-leading 11th save yesterday.  Avila fanned Carter looking to end the inning as WT stranded eight for the game.
  • The Texans loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth on a walk, single and hit batsmen with one out, off WT junior Andrew Schwulst, the fourth WT pitcher in the game.  Schwulst fanned Morton for the second out and got a fly out to left to end the inning.
  • A one out walk to Bryan kept the Buffs alive in the ninth, but Avila induced the double play to end the game.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Buffs hitting woes continued as they scored three runs on five hits with one error, while stranding eight and left the bases loaded in both the seventh and eighth innings.
  • TSU scored seven runs on ten hits and left ten men on base.
  • Baxter was the lone Buff with two hits in the game going 2 for 4 with a run scored, while WT again had just one extra-base hit in the game on a triple from Nakagawa who went 1 for 3 with a run scored.
  • Morton paced the Texans going 2 for 4 with two runs scored and a RBI, while hitting a home run as the Texans had three long balls in the game.
  • Larison dropped his first game of the season (5-1) going just 3.2 innings, allowing four hits, two earned runs, walked three and fanned five.
  • Pontley (7-2) took the win going 6.2 innings, allowing four hits, three earned runs, walked three and fanned seven.  Avila picked up his 12th save of the season.
  • TSU now has won 10-straight games and taken two games back from the Buffs in the conference standings as the Texans entered the series four games back in the loss column.

UP NEXT:

  • The Buffs and Texans will conclude the series with a doubleheader Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. as WT will try and salvage a series split to keep a four-game lead in the loss column heading into the final two weeks of the regular season.
