No. 6 Buffs Get Hard-Fought Doubleheader Sweep at Tarleton State Sunday Afternoon; Split Series

THE BASICS:
 
  • Score: #6 West Texas A&M 6-4, Tarleton State 3-3
 
  • Records: West Texas A&M 32-9, 14-2 LSC, Tarleton State 29-15, 14-6 LSC)
 
  • Location: Stephenville, Texas (Cecil Ballow Complex)
 
  • The Lead: The No. 6 West Texas A&M baseball team battled back with a hard-fought doubleheader sweep at Tarleton State Sunday afternoon to split the Lone Star Conference series.  The Buffs won the opener 6-3 and the nightcap, 4-3.  WT never trailed in the doubleheader after not leading at all in the first two games of the series.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game One):
 
  • The Buffs came out and posted a 6-0 lead through the first six innings, getting things started with a single run in the second as freshman Tommy Williams walked to begin the inning, followed by single from senior Brandon Marrero and a sacrifice bunt moved both to second and third. 
  • Senior Nelson Paredes hit a sacrifice fly to left field for a 1-0 lead.
  • WT added to its lead in the third as senior Nick Canas singled to short and senior Luis Amaro blasted a two run home run to right for his 11th home run of the season and a 3-0 lead. 
  • Marrero singled to right, plating junior Tag Baxter for a 4-0 lead.
  • Two more runs scored for the Buffs in the sixth as Marrero began the inning with a single to right and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches from TSU starter Nathan Hickey. 
  • Senior Bodie Bryan singled through the left side, plating Marrero for a 5-0 lead, followed by senior Jimmy Cubillos reaching on a fielder's choice as Carter, who walked earlier, scored on an error and a 6-0 lead.
  • WT junior starter Darin Cook was masterful through six innings as he tossed a one-hitter.
  • In the seventh, Cook was going for the shutout, but a Luke Morton double to right got things started for the Texans with one out.
  • Following the second out, Francisco Rodriguez singled up the middle and advanced on an error plating a run and Jake Hasbrouck double home Rodriguez for a 6-2 score. 
  • Hunter Hudson, who was 0 for 3 to that point, singled through the left side plating a run and a 6-3 score.
  • WT walked LSC leading home run leader Blake Adams to load the bases as junior Braden Baker relieved Cook.
  • With the winning run at the plate, Baker got Elvin Alamo to ground out to end the game.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (Game One):
 
  • WT found its offense against Hickey in the game as the Buffs tallied six runs on ten hits with one error, while TSU had three runs on five hits with three errors as all three runs and five hits came in the final at bat.
  • Marrero tallied his second three hit game of the season going 3 for 3 with a run scored and a RBI to lead the team.  Amaro went 1 for 4 with a run scored and two RBI on the round-tripper. 
  • Baxter went 2 for 4 with a run scored and a double.
  • Cook (8-1) went 6.2 innings, allowing five hits, three earned runs, walked three and fanned five as he leads the team in wins.
  • Baker pitched 0.1 innings, earning his fifth save of the season.
  • Five different Texans had hits in the game.
  • Hickey fell to 8-2 on the year, going six innings, allowing nine hits, six runs – five earned, walked two and fanned seven.
  • The win snapped TSU's ten-game winning streak and was just the third home loss of the season for the Texans. 
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game Two):
 
  • WT jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but could have had more as Bryan began the game with a triple to right, followed by a triple from Cubillos for a 1-0 lead.  Canas was plunked by a pitch and, after the second out, Baxter struck out swinging and Canas was thrown out trying to steal second to end the inning.
  • In the bottom of the first, Adams was hit by a pitch to begin the frame and stole second.  Ruben Rodriguez singled and Morton then singled through the right side, plating Adams for a 1-1 score. 
  • WT junior Drew Mesecher got out of the jam with a fly out and a foul out as TSU left two in scoring position.
  • In the top of the second, the Buffs loaded the bases with one out on a walk to Williams and a hit batsmen to Marrero, followed by a sacrifice bunt from Carter and a walk to Paredes as TSU starter Colby Fowler was chased from the game in favor of Sid Payan.
  • Bryan drew a bases loaded walk for a 2-1 lead following the change and another change from the Texans on the mound as Mitchell Morris replaced Payan following the walk.
  • The struggles for the Buffs with runners in position continued as Cubillos hit into a double play to end the inning.
  • Following two walks and a sacrifice bunt, Williams grounded out to short, plating Canas for a 3-1 lead in the third for WT as the Buffs left a runner at third and was 1 for 6 with runners in position to that point. 
  • Tarleton State used an infield single and a RBI double to left center from Jake Hasbrouck for a 3-2 score with one out in the bottom of the fourth and Tyler Fowler had a single up the middle putting runners at the corners for his second hit of the game.
  • Hudson then singled to right center, plating Hasbrouck for a 3-3 score as Baker relieved Mesecher to try and stop the bleeding.
  • Baker got a fielder's choice out for the second out of the inning and Alamo reached on a fielder's choice out for the final out as Baker preserved the tie leaving runners at the corners.
  • The Buffs put runners at the corners with one out in the fifth as Cubillos singled to center and Canas reached on a fielder's choice, followed by a single to center from Amaro.
  • TSU reliever Chris Reed got a strikeout and fielder's choice to end the inning as the Buffs once again stranded runners in positon and left six on through five innings.
  • WT loaded the bases in the sixth with one out as TSU went to the bullpen in favor of Trent Stafford, the sixth pitcher of the game for TSU. 
  • Cubillos hit a sacrifice fly to center plating Marrero for a 4-3 lead heading to the bottom of the sixth.  Baker allowed one hit in the sixth, sending the game to the seventh. 
  • With the heart of the order up for the Texans in the bottom of the seventh, Baker got the first out with a ground out to second and got the second out on a fly out to right field.
  • Morton recorded his second hit of the game, putting the tying run on base with a single up the middle, but Baker came back with his third strikeout of the game to end it as the Buffs earned the hard-fought series split.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (Game Two):
 
  • The Buffs scored four runs on seven hits, while leaving nine on base as they scored a single run in four different innings.
  • Tarleton State tallied three runs on nine hits, while stranding eight.
  • Cubillos went 2 for 3 in the nightcap with two RBI and a triple as the lone Buff with multiple hits.
  • Baker earned the win in relief (5-2), going 3.2 innings, allowing two hits, walked one and fanned three as he tallied the save in the first game and not allowing a run in four innings on the day.
  • Morton was 2 for 3 with a RBI for the Texans, while Hasbrouck went 2 for 3 with a run scored, a double and a RBI and Fowler was 2 for 3. 
  • Zack Svennson (0-1) took the loss in 0.1 innings, allowing one hit, one earned run and walked two as TSU used seven pitchers in the game.
  • WT pushes the lead in the loss column back to four games as WT is 14-2 in league play and Tarleton State is 14-6. 
  • TSU has one series left next week at Cameron, while WT has two series' left, hosting Texas A&M-Kingsville and at Angelo State.
  • The Buffs won the regular season series with Tarleton State, 6-2, including the non-conference series earlier in the year.
 
 
 
UP NEXT:
 
  • The Buffs return home to host Texas A&M-Kingsville next weekend at Wilder Park for Senior Weekend.  The series gets underway at 6:30 p.m. Friday evening. 
  • Texas A&M-Kingsville went 3-1 against WT in a non-conference series back in March in Kingsville as TAMUK is the only team to win a series against WT this season.
