No. 6 Buffs Open Critical LSC Series with a 12-9 Win over No. 18 Texas A&M-Kingsville

THE BASICS:

  • The Lead: Behind 12 runs and 11 hits, the league-leading and No. 6 West Texas A&M baseball team opened a four-game series with No. 18 Texas A&M-Kingsville for a 12-9 win Friday evening at Wilder Park.   The Buffs and Javelinas are scheduled for a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 4 p.m. to continue the series.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • WT never trailed in the game and posted two runs in the bottom of the first inning as senior Bodie Bryan began the frame with a single to center and stole second.A ground out moved him to third as he scored on a RBI single up the middle from senior Nick Canas for a 1-0 lead and senior Luis Amaro doubled home Canas for a 2-0 lead.
  • TAMUK tied the game in the top of the third as Kohl Ullman singled up the middle and advanced to third on a fielding error plating a run and, later in the frame, Dallas Stefano hit a sacrifice fly to center field, plating Ullman for a 2-2 score.
  • The tie was short lived, however, as WT returned the favor in the bottom of the inning with a two run home run from Canas for his third round-tripper of the season and a 4-2 lead.
  • TAMUK pulled within 4-3 in the fourth, but WT junior pitcher Joe Corbett got out of the jam as the Javelinas stranded two in the inning.
  • In the bottom of the frame, three miscues by the Javelians led to five runs for the Buffs and a 9-3 lead.Bryan hit a RBI single, a fielder's choice error plated another run and a three RBI triple from junior Tag Baxter highlighted the inning.
  • Stefano blasted a home run to right center in the top of the fifth for a 9-4 score where the game stayed until the top of the eighth as Corbett pitched seven strong innings, allowing six hits, four runs – two earned, walked three and fanned one.
  • In the top of the eighth, WT went to the bullpen in favor of junior Andrew Schwulst who got Stefano to strikeout, but reached on a wild pitch.An error followed and a sacrifice fly plated the first of two runs and a double from Pablo Hernandez scored the second.WT went to the bullpen again as junior Dominic Yearego relieved Schwulst who went 0.1 innings, allowing one hit, two runs – one earned and fanned one.Yearego pitched to two batters, walking both as junior Braden Baker relieved him.
  • With one out, Baker got a huge strikeout of Ullman on a 3-2 count and a fielder's choice ended the inning as the Javelinas left the bags full.
  • WT added three runs in the bottom of the ninth for a 12-6 lead as Amaro hit a two RBI single and a wild pitch plated Canas.
  • In the top of the ninth, TAMUK made things interesting as Levi Zents singled to begin the inning, followed by a walk and pinch-hitter Travis Geiser hit his first home run of the season – a three run shot for a 12-9 score.
  • Baker got a strikeout and ground out to end the inning for his sixth save of the season.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • Bryan went 3 for 5 with two runs scored and a RBI to lead the team, while Canas was 2 for 4 with four runs scored, three RBI and a home run.Amaro went 2 for 4 with a run scored and three RBI, while Baxter was 2 for 4 with three RBI and a triple.
  • Corbett improved to 8-2 on the year, while TAMUK starter Tyler Flores (5-1) suffered his first loss of the season, going 3.2 innings, allowing eight hits, nine runs – four earned, walked one and fanned three.
  • TAMUK held WT to just three hits over the final 4.1 innings, but three runs proved to be the difference.
  • Geiser went 1 for 1 with a run scored and four RBI, including the home run, while Zents was 2 for 4 with a run scored.

  • The Buffs and Javelinas are scheduled for the doubleheader Saturday at 4 p.m. at Wilder Park.
