No. 6 Buffs Walk-Off No. 18 Javelinas for Doubleheader Split Saturday

THE BASICS:
 
  • Score: #6 West Texas A&M 1-5, #18 Texas A&M-Kingsville 23-4

  • The Lead: Following a season-worst 23-1 loss, the No. 6 West Texas A&M baseball team rallied for a thrilling 5-4, walk-off win in the nightcap, plating five runs over the final two innings to earn a hard-fought doubleheader split with No. 18 Texas A&M-Kingsville Saturday.  WT takes a 2-1 lead in the series heading into tomorrow's finale for Senior Day.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game One):
 
  • A walk, an error and a RBI single from Dallas Stefano gave TAMUK a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with one out.A ground out plated the second run of the inning for a 2-0 lead.On a 3-2 count, Brad Jones singled up the middle plating the third run of the inning.
  • Dylan Hutcheson hit a two RBI triple for a 5-0 TAMUK lead as all nine batters came to the plate for the Javelinas in the first inning.WT senior starter Ryan Larison got a strikeout to end the inning as TAMUK led 6-0.
  • A single and a RBI double gave TAMUK a 7-0 lead with nobody out in the top of the second. Stefano hit an infield single for a RBI and put TAMUK up 8-0 chasing Larison from the game, with nobody out in the second as senior Jamie Boyd relived Larison.
  • With the bases loaded Jones belted a two RBI double to center as the first six Javelinas in the inning reached base and a 10-0 lead and a ground out RBI pushed the lead for TAMUK to 11-0 and two out.
  • A 1-2 single up the middle from Alex Gonzalez, who was the ninth batter and last out in the first inning, gave TAMUK a 12-0 lead as the team batted around in the second.
  • Boyd retired the Javelinas in order in the third.Senior Nelson Paredes singled to right and advanced to second on an error for the first hit of the game for the Buffs in the third.TAMUK starter Jarred Taylor got out of it with a strikeout looking.
  • The Javelinas added five more runs in the top of the fourth for a 17-0 lead and added six more runs in the fifth as TAMUK batted around in the second, fourth and fifth innings in the game and a 23-0 lead.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (Game One):
 
  • The Buffs gave up a season-high 23 runs as TAMUK tallied 18 hits and one error, while holding WT to just one run, three hits and three miscues.
  • Larison (5-2) went just one inning, allowing eight hits, 10 runs – five earned, walked one and fanned one as the Buffs used four pitchers in the game, including junior Henry Hausman seeing his first action on the mound this season.
  • Paredes, senior Nick Canas and sophomore Ethan Washburn each had hits, while Washburn had a RBI triple for the lone run.
  • Five different Javelinas had two or more hits in the game and seven had two or more RBI in the game, while seven also scored two or more runs.
  • Taylor (3-0) went the distance, allowing one earned run, walked five and fanned four.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game Two):
 
  • A pair of singles and a ground out plated a run for the Javelinas in the top of the first of the nightcap and a miscue by the Buffs scored the second run.
  • Christian Caudle then doubled and scored on the second error of the inning as Stefano was gunned down at the plate on the Caudle double for the second out and a 3-0 lead, as Caudle scored on a throw down the left field line after the out at the plate.
  • TAMUK singled and doubled to begin the top of the fourth, followed by a double from Dylan Hutcheson for a 4-0 lead.
  • Sophomore Darius Carter laced a double to right center with two out in the bottom of the fifth, but the Buffs were unable to score off Isaiah Lybarger who had tossed a three-hit shutout to that point.Lybarger fanned seven with no walks through five innings.
  • Senior Bodie Bryan began the sixth with a double to right center and senior Jimmy Cubillos singled to right for the first run of the game, plating Bryan and Canas blasted his fifth home run of the year for a 4-3 deficit with nobody out.
  • TAMUK made a move to the bullpen in favor of Joshua Valdez as Lybarger finished going five innings, allowing six hits, three earned runs, no walks and fanned seven.
  • In an eight pitch at bat, Amaro was called out looking on a pitch appearing to be outside the zone for the first out of the inning.
  • Junior Tag Baxter reached on an error by the second baseman, but Valdez got his second strikeout for two away.Junior pinch-runner Blake Weaver stole second to get into scoring position.Valdez walked freshman Tommy Williams but, on a 2-2 count, sophomore Darius Carter hit a high pop up outside the mound, which dropped for a RBI and a 4-4 score heading to the seventh as all nine batters batted in the inning.2
  • Bryan smoked a double off the left field wall to being the bottom of the seventh and Cubillos followed with a single up the middle, plating Bryan for the walk-off win.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (Game Two):
 
  • The Buffs offense struggled again through the first four innings, but came to life over the final three with four runs in the sixth to tie the game and the winner in the seventh.
  • WT tallied nine hits and five runs with two errors, while TAMUK had four runs on eight hits with one error.
  • Cook (9-1) went the distance for the Buffs allowing eight hits, four runs – two earned, walked one and fanned seven as he leads the team in wins this season.
  • Valdez (1-1) took the loss, allowing three hits, two runs – one earned, walked one and fanned two after the strong outing from Lybarger.
  • Bryan and Cubillos each had three hits while Bryan scored two runs and Cubillos drove in two.Canas was 1 for 3 with a run scored and two RBI, including the home run.
  • WT pushed the lead over TAMUK in standings to five games, while Tarleton State won a doubleheader at Cameron and cut the WT lead to three games in the loss column over the Texans.
  • TAMUK fell into fourth – a game back of Angelo State in the standings with a total of five games remaining for WT, TAMUK and ASU, while TSU has one game left tomorrow.
 
 
UP NEXT:
 
  • The Buffs and Javelinas are scheduled for a single game Sunday to conclude the 2018 home season for WT.
  • Sunday will be Senior Day as the Buffs will honor 11 seniors at approximately 12:40 p.m. playing in their final regular season game at home.
