No. 6 Buffs Battle Back for 11-6 Victory on Senior Day; Win Series

THE BASICS:
 
  • Score: #6 West Texas A&M 11, #18 Texas A&M-Kingsville 6

  • The Lead: The No. 6 West Texas A&M baseball team rallied from an early deficit for an 11-6 win on Senior Day over No. 18 Texas A&M-Kingsville to win the series, 3-1.  The Buffs improved to 35-10, lead the Lone Star Conference with a 17-3 record with four games remaining in the regular season.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • Prior to the game, the Buffs honored 11 seniors playing in their final regular season home game as the 2018 senior class includes; Jimmy Cubillos, Nelson Paredes, Bodie Bryan, Phlllip Muldrow, Ryan Larison, Jamie Boyd, Tate Huebner, Noah Draper, Luis Amaro, Nick Canas and Brandon Marrero.
  • A leadoff walk and an error, followed by an RBI single to right from Christian Caudle put TAMUK up 1-0 in the top of the first.The Javelinas scored first in both games yesterday, but junior Drew Mesecher got his second strikeout of the inning to end the threat as the Javelinas left two stranded.
  • Amaro began the bottom of the second with a home run to left field for his team-leading 12th round-tripper of the season and a 1-1 score.
  • With two out and one on, \Canas singled to center, plating Bryan for a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third.WT loaded the bases, but was unable to get more runs in the inning.
  • The Javlinas put two on with one out in the top of the fourth, but Mesecher fanned his fourth Javelina of the game for the second out, but Kohl Ullman singled up the middle plating a run, but Dylan Hutcheson was caught in a run down for the third out.
  • A double down the right field line from Manny Loredo and a single up the middle from Levi Zents gave TAMUK a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth.With one out, Caudle singled up the middle for a RBI and a 4-2 Javelina lead as WT made a move to the bullpen in favor of junior Braden Baker.
  • Baker got a fly out to center for the second out and got his first strikeout of the game to get out of the jam.
  • A pair of singles and the second home run of the game from Amaro gave WT the lead back at 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth off TAMUK reliever Seth Hubert, who replaced starter Lee May Gonzalez.
  • Following the home run, two singles and a hit batsman loaded the bases for the Buffs, but an infield popup ended the threat as WT left the bases loaded for the second time in the game.
  • TAMUK got a single and a walk with nobody out in the top of the sixth as WT had a meeting at the mound, and Baker got a 463 for two away and the tying run at third.Baker fanned Zents to get out of the inning preserving the lead.
  • Cubillos laced a double to left center and walk to Canas put two on with nobody out in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Amaro had his third hit of the game scoring another run with a single to right as TAMUK went to the bullpen for the fourth time in Tyler Crouch as WT built the lead to 6-4.Junior Tag Baxter singled through the left side for a RBI and a 7-4 lead.Senior Brandon Marrero got plunked with a pitch loading the bases for the Buffs for the third time in the game.
  • TAMUK again went to the bullpen as Preston Plovanich entered with the bases loaded and nobody out as it was the third Javelina pitcher of the inning.With one out, sophomore Darius Carter hit a sacrifice fly to center for an 8-4 lead.
  • In the fifth and sixth innings for WT, all nine batters batted each time and Cubillos led off the seventh for the third inning in a row leading off.
  • Cubillos laced his second-straight double down the left field line to begin the seventh, followed by a walk and a single from Amaro.Baxter belted a two RBI ground-rule double to left center for a 10-4 lead chasing Plovanich from the game in favor of Garrett Alexander for the sixth pitcher of the contest for TAMUK.Alexander got out of the jam, keeping the margin at six.
  • Pablo Hernandez began the top of the eighth with a solo shot to left for a 10-5 score and pinch-hitter Travis Geiser singled through the left side and a single from Giancarlo Servin put two on with nobody out.
  • Ullman singled up the middle plating the second run of the inning for a 10-6 lead, but junior Justice Nakagawa got an unassisted double play at short for two away and a strikeout ended the inning.
  • Senior Bodie Bryan just missed a grand slam to dead center in the seventh, but made up for it with a solo shot in the eighth for an 11-6 lead.
  • Yearego shutdown the Javelinas in order in the ninth for his fourth save of the season.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • The Buffs tallied 11 runs on 17 hits with one error, while TAMUK had six runs on 14 hits with one error.
  • Amaro went a perfect 4 for 4 with three runs scored and five RBI, along with two home runs to lead the Buffs.Cubillos went 3 for 6 with three runs scored and two doubles.
  • Bryan and Williams each had two hits as Bryan scored two runs and drove in one.
  • Baker (6-2) took the win in relief of Mesecher, who went 4.1 innings, allowing eight hits, four runs – three earned, walked three and fanned four as Baker went 1.2 innings, allowing two hits, walked and struck out two.
  • Yearego went three innings, allowing four hits, two earned runs and fanned one.
  • Six different Javelinas had two hits in the game, while Hubert (3-2) took the loss in relief of Gonzalez, as Gonzalez went four innings, allowing five hits, two earned runs and fanned three.
  • The win gave WT its 24th home win of the season, tying the school-record for home wins with the 1999 team (24-10).The Buffs finished the regular season at 24-3 at Wilder Park.
  • WT has a three-game lead in the loss column over Tarleton State heading into the final week of the regular season.
  • The league champion and host of the upcoming LSC Championship will be decided next week.
  • Tarleton State concluded its season with a sweep at Cameron this weekend and finishes at 18-6 in LSC play.
