No. 6 Buffs Claim at Least a Share of LSC Regular Season Title with 6-3 Victory at Angelo State

THE BASICS:

  • The Lead: Behind a solid pitching performance from West Texas A&M junior Joe Corbett, the No. 6 Buffs opened a four-game series at Angelo State with a 6-3 victory Friday evening earning at least a share of the 2018 Lone Star Conference regular season title.  Corbett went eight innings, allowing three runs – two earned on eight hits with two walks and five strikeouts.  WT needs one win in the final three games of the series to win its first the regular season title outright in program history.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • In the bottom of the first, Angelo State put two on with two out, but was unable to score as Corbett got out of the jam with a fly out from Jacob Boston as ASU left two stranded.
  • A hit batsmen, stolen base and RBI single from Parker Bramlett put ASU up 1-0 in the bottom of the second with one out.Corbett got his first strikeout of the game, but Bramlett stole second again putting a runner in positon with two away, as the Buffs limited the damage to one run.
  • Following a single to begin the top of the fourth by senior Nick Canas, senior Luis Amaro took ASU starter Shannon Broussard deep for a two run home run and 2-1 WT lead for his team-leading 14th round-tripper of the season.
  • Following the home run, junior Tag Baxter doubled down the left field line and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt.Freshman Tommy Williams singled home Baxter for a 3-1 lead.
  • A leadoff double from Trevor Moses began the bottom of the fourth as a miscue plated Moses on a Andrew Morales bunt single for a 3-2 lead, but Corbett got out of the inning without any further damage as the Rams left a runner at third and fifth stranded runner of the game.
  • Nick Novak began the bottom of the fifth with a triple to left field as ASU had a hit in each of the first five innings of the game.Bradley Mathiowetz singled home Novak for a 3-3 score.Mathiowetz stole second for the third theft by the Rams in four tries in the game, but a double play ended the threat.
  • In the sixth, Baxter tallied a single for his second hit of the game and a sacrifice bunt moved him into scoring position for sophomore Darius Carter who doubled down the left field line putting WT ahead again, 4-3 with two out.
  • Corbett had his first three-up-three-down inning in the sixth ending the string of five-straight innings with hits by the Rams.
  • The Buffs used a walk, sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch moved senior Bodie Bryan to third with one out.Canas singled home Bryan for a 5-3 lead in the seventh off reliever Shane Browning, who entered for the final out of the sixth.Browning got out of the jam with a double play.
  • Corbett retired the Rams in order for the second-straight inning.
  • Mathiowetz singled up the middle to begin the bottom of the eighth for his third hit of the game, ending Corbett's string of seven-straight retired.Corbett got two outs and ended the inning with his fifth K of the game preserving the 5-3 lead.
  • A single to Bryan, a walk and a sacrifice bunt from Canas, put runners at second and third for the Buffs in the ninth with one out, followed by an intentional walk to Amaro to load the bases.
  • Baxter hit a sacrifice fly plating Bryan for a 6-3 lead going to the Rams' final at bat.
  • Junior Dominic Yearego relieved Corbett to begin the bottom of the ninth as he had the bottom of the order up for ASU.
  • With one out in the inning, Bramlett hit an infield single to third and a fielder's choice got the second out for the Buffs.Pinch-runner, Parker Tadlock, stole second and Yearego fanned Michael Urquidi to end the game.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • Corbett improved to 9-2 on the year tying for the team-lead in wins and one short of tying the school-record for wins in a season set last year by former Buff Joshua Payne.
  • WT tallied six runs on 10 hits with one error, while leaving nine on base and ASU scored three runs on nine hits with one error, while stranding seven.
  • Canas went 2 for 4 with a run scored and a RBI, while Baxter, who has been on a tear recently, went 2 for 4 with two runs scored and a RBI, along with a double.
  • Amaro went 1 for 3 with a run scored and two RBI, including his home run.
  • Yearego earned his fifth save of the season, pitching the final inning, allowing one hit and fanning one.
  • Broussard (3-1) took the loss, going 5.2 innings, allowing seven hits, four earned runs, walked one and fanned six.
  • Mathiowetz went 3 for 4 with a RBI to lead the Rams, while Novak went 2 for 4 with aa run scored and Bramlett was 2 for 4 with a RBI.
  • WT tied Texas A&M-Kingsville for the regular season title in 2015 each with a 23-12 record in league play for the only regular-season LSC title in program history.
