Gritty Buffs Need Extra-Innings for Series Sweep of UT Permian Basin, Run Winning Streak to Nine

THE BASICS:
 
  • Score: #9/13 West Texas A&M 11, UT Permian Basin 7
 
  • Records: West Texas A&M 26-7 (8-0 LSC), UT Permian Basin 4-25 (0-4 LSC)
 
  • Location: Odessa, Texas (Ted & Jan Roden Baseball Field)
 
  • The Lead: Down 4-1 heading into the seventh, the No. 9/13 West Texas A&M baseball team scored five runs in the seventh and eighth innings and plated four runs in the 12th for a hard-fought 11-7 win over UT Permian Basin, Saturday afternoon. The Buffs swept the Lone Star Conference series and ran its winning streak to a season-high nine games.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • UTPB took an early 3-0 lead in the second inning as Mike Fernandez singled and a walk to Dalton Drury put two on as the Falcons then loaded the bases with a hit batsman plating the first run.
  • WT junior Braden Baker replaced senior starter Noah Draper and the Buffs got a double play scoring the second run and a RBI single gave UTPB a 3-0 lead.
  • The Buffs got on the board in the third as junior Justice Nakagawa was hit by a pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly from senior Luis Amaro, for a 3-1 deficit.
  • ,After a score by the Falcons in the sixth pushing the lead to 4-1, the Buffs plated two runs in the seventh courtesy of a junior Christian Loya single to center, plating two runs for a 4-3 deficit.WT left the bags full in the sixth.
  • UTPB scored in the bottom of the frame on Drury double to left for a 5-3 score.
  • The Buffs took the lead in the eighth, plating three runs as senior Jimmy Cubillos singled home runs and junior Blake Weaver scored on a wild pitch for a 6-5 lead.
  • In the bottom of the ninth, the Buffs had two out and looked to close the door, but Druy laced a RBI triple to center field for a 6-6 score, sending the game to extra-innings for the second time in the series.
  • WT had a two out single and stolen base from Weaver in the tenth, but were unable to score, as it was the 11th stranded runner for the Buffs in the game.
  • With one out in the bottom of the 11th, Skyler Palermo singled up the middle putting the potential winning run on base.
  • Senior pitcher Philip Muldrow got the second out and a single put two on base, but Muldrow came back with a strikeout on a 3-2 count to end the inning, sending the game to the 11th.
  • Amaro began the 11th with a double to center field, followed by an out, the Falcons went to the bullpen in favor of Tyler Averitt to replace Caleb Thornton.
  • Averitt retired Canas for the second out, but senior Brandon Marrero came up with a double to center, plating senior pinch-runner Jamie Boyd for a 7-6 score as Marrero was thrown out at third for the final out and a 7-6 WT lead with two out scoring a theme in the game for both teams.
  • A leadoff walk put the tying run on for the Falcons in the bottom of the 11th and a hit batsmen put two on base as senior Tate Huebner replaced Muldrow on the mound for the Buffs.
  • A single from Druy loaded the bases with nobody out and a fielder's choice RBI tied the game at seven from Cooper Coe with the winning run at third.
  • WT intentionally walked Chris Ortega to force the out at any base as it paid off with Huebner inducing the ground ball for a double play sending the game to the 12th.
  • A leadoff single from junior Nick Guaragna began the 12th for the Buffs as the game became the longest in terms of innings and time of the season.
  • WT then used a hit batsmen and a RBI single to left from senior Nelson Paredes for an 8-7 lead and a bunt single from Weaver coupled with a throwing error plated a second run, followed by a two RBI single through the left side from Cubillos for an 11-7 lead.
  • Junior Cole Hadley put down a sacrifice bunt moving Cubillos to second with one out and a single from Loy put runners at the corners as Canas reached on a fielder's choice, plating what would have been the 12th run, but was called out for interference ending the inning.
  • Huebner got the first out in the bottom of the frame with a pop out to shortstop, but a walk put one on for the Falcons.He then got a ground out for the second out and a strikeout ended the game.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • The Buffs recorded 11 runs on 15 hits with one error, while UTPB had seven runs on 15 hits with one error.
  • The game was the longest in terms of time and innings this season, while the time was the longest in school-history at 5:11.
  • Cubillos went 2 for 5 with a run scored and a team-high four RBI to lead the team, while Weaver was 3 for 5 with three runs scored.Loya was 2 for 6 with two RBI.
  • Huebner earned his first win of the season (1-0) as he pitched the final two innings, allowing one hit, walked two and fanned one.
  • WT had four doubles from four different players in the game, while walking seven times and striking out 12.
  • UTPB was led by Drury as he went 4 for 5 with two runs scored, two RBI, one double and two triples as he was a home run away from the cycle.Fernandez went 3 for 5 with three runs scored.
  • The game saw a combined ten pitchers with five from each team as WT recorded 10 strikeouts in the game with six walks.
  • WT ran its winning streak to nine games for a season-high, matching the mark set in 2017 to open the season.
