Vanderburg Wins 400th Career Game in Hard-Fought Doubleheader Sweep of UT Permian Basin

THE BASICS:
 
  • Score: #9/13 West Texas A&M 9-7, UT Permian Basin 6-5
 
  • Records: West Texas A&M 25-7 (7-0 LSC), UT Permian Basin 4-24 (0-3 LSC)
 
  • Location: Odessa, Texas (Ted & Jan Roden Baseball Field)
 
  • The Lead: Following his 300th win at West Texas A&M yesterday, tenth year head coach Matt Vanderburg won his 400th and 401st victories Friday in a hard-fought doubleheader sweep at UT Permian Basin.  The No. 9/13 West Texas A&M baseball team dug deep for a 9-6 win in the opener in 11 innings and won the nightcap 7-5.    
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game One):
 
  • WT broke open a scoreless game in the opener with three runs – all with two out as the Buffs left the bases full in the previous inning without scoring a run.In the third, senior Nick Canas singled home a run, while junior Tag Baxter singled home a run and junior Nick Guaragna singled home a run for a 3-0 score.
  • UTPB responded in kind in the bottom of the frame as an error led to one unearned run and a pair of singles scored the other two.
  • The Falcons added a run in the fourth started with a double to center to begin the frame and a single followed plating the go ahead run as an error proved costly by the Buffs once again.UTPB added two more in the fifth with a fielder's choice and two more errors scored another unearned run for a 6-3 lead.
  • The comeback Buffs plated three runs in the sixth to tie the game with a bases loaded balk, an error and a RBI double from Canas.
  • UTPB had a chance in the sixth with an error by the Buffs, but WT got out of the jam, stranding two.
  • The game went to extra innings with WT putting a man on in the tenth on a single from Guaragna, but were unable to score.
  • In the 11th a one out walk to senior Brandon Marrero, followed by a single and error from junior Christian Loya and a RBI infield single from Canas put the Buffs ahead for good.Sophomore Darius Carter singled home a run and a sacrifice fly from Guaragna put WT up 9-6.
  • WT junior Dominic Yearego retired the Falcons in order in the bottom of the 11th for the win.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (Game One):
 
  • For the game, WT had nine runs on 11 hits with five errors, while UTPB recorded six runs on 13 hits with three errors.
  • Canas was 3 for 6 with two runs scored and three RBI to lead the team, while Guaragna was 3 for 3 with two RBI.
  • Senior Ryan Larison started the game on the mound for the Buffs, going 3.1 innings, allowing seven hits four runs – three earned and walked two.
  • Yearego pitched a season-high 7.2 innings in relief to earn the win as he improved to 3-0 on the year.Yearego allowed six hits and two unearned runs, while fanning five.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game Two):
 
  • WT took command early in the second game as it plated three runs in the first inning, highlighted by a Canas two RBI double to right and a Loya RBI single.
  • UTPB scored two runs in the bottom of the first and tied the game in the third with a single to right for a 3-3 score.
  • The Buffs added two runs in the fourth helped out by an error on the Falcons as a sacrifice bunt RBI from freshman Tommy Williams plated the first run and Guaragna scored unearned for the second.Williams came up with a two RBI single up the middle in the fifth for a 7-3 lead.
  • UTPB pulled within 7-4 in the bottom of the fifth also helped out by a WT miscue as the run was unearned courtesy of a single.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, a throwing error and a walk loaded the bases for the Falcons.UTPB had a chance at the walk-off win as Mike Fernandez's sacrifice fly was caught on the warning track for the first out as UTPB pulled within 7-5.
  • WT junior reliever Braden Baker got a strikeout and a pop out to shortstop to end the game as UTPB stranded two.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (Game Two):
 
  • The Buffs were led by senior Jimmy Cubillos in the nightcap as he went 3 for 3 with a run scored, while Canas was 1 for 4 with two RBI and Williams was 2 for 3 with three RBI.
  • Junior Darin Cook began the game for the Buffs earning his sixth win of the season (6-1), going five innings, allowing five hits, four runs – three earned, walked four and fanned four.
  • Baker earned the save, his fourth of the season, going two innings, allowing one hit, one unearned run, walked one and struck out one.
  • For the doubleheader, Canas went 4 for 10 with two runs scored, two doubles and five RBI to lead the team, while Guaragna also had four hits with two runs scored and two RBI.
  • Seven WT miscues led to five unearned runs for the Falcons.
  • Vanderburg improved to 302-198 at WT in 10 seasons and 401-265 overall in 13 seasons of coaching.
 
 
UP NEXT:
 
  • The series concludes Saturday at 1 p.m., as the Buffs then will have a bye week to get ready for Cameron to visit for a four-game series, beginning Friday, Apr. 13 at 6:30 p.m. at Wilder Park.
