Halbert Ties WT’s All-Time Wins Mark as the #14 Lady Buffs Roll in Game One, 9-1

CANYON, Texas – Senior right hander Kilee Halbert moved into a tie atop of the West Texas A&M Softball record book for career victories on Thursday night as the #14 Lady Buffs rolled past the visiting Falcons of UT Permian Basin during Lone Star Conference action at Schaeffer Park in Canyon.

The Lady Buffs and Falcons return to action tomorrow afternoon as they wrap-up their Lone Star Conference weekend series with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. at Schaeffer Park.

HOW IT HAPPENENED:
The Lady Buffs used the long ball to get on the board in the home half of the first inning as Kylee Moore lifted a two-run shot the other way to left center for her 19th homerun of the season and the early 2-0 lead. Allie Smith and Stevie McLemore singled to left to start the bottom of the second followed three batters later by a Kourtney Coveney two-run triple to right center and a Moore RBI single to make it 5-2.

The Falcons cut into the lead in the top of the third inning as they took advantage of a two-base error followed by a sac bunt and an RBI single to left center by Jessica Gonzalez to cut the lead to 5-1. Alyx Cordell was hit by a pitch to start off the bottom of the fourth followed by an Ashley Hardin double to left center, Coveney singled to right center to drive in a pair of runs to extend the lead to 7-1.

Smith singled up the middle to start the home half of the fifth followed by a McLemore double down the left field line to put runners at second and third with no outs, UTPB forced a popup behind the plate for the first out as WT turned over their lineup as Hardin lifted a fly ball to the wall for a sacrifice fly to run the lead to 8-1. The Lady Buffs ended the game in the bottom of the sixth inning as they loaded the bases with one out before a wild pitch scored Moore from third and ended the game, 9-1.

Halbert picked up the win (13-4) for the Lady Buffs in the circle, allowing one run (unearned) on five hits with no walks and five strikeout in the 51st complete game of the senior's storied career. The Dalhart native also tied former Lady Buff standout Marci Womack (2009-12) for the most career wins in program history with 70.
