Halbert Becomes WT’s All-Time Wins Leader as the #14 Lady Buffs Sweep Past UTPB

CANYON, Texas – The #14 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M connected on three homeruns in the first inning of the afternoon and never looked back as they rolled past the visiting Falcons of UT Permian Basin in Lone Star Conference action at Schaeffer Park in Canyon, Texas.
 
The Lady Buffs return to action next weekend as they head to Commerce, Texas to take on the Lions of Texas A&M-Commerce in a three-game Lone Star Conference series starting on Friday night at 7 p.m. at the John Cain Family Softball Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENENED (GAME 1):
Ashley Hardin started off the scoring in the home half of the first inning as the senior crushed a solo homerun to left center followed later in the inning by a Kylee Moore RBI single and an RBI double to right field by Shayne Starkey to make it 3-0, the Lady Buffs weren't done yet as Allie Smith lifted a two-run homerun to left center followed by a Stevie McLemore solo shot to left to make it 6-0.
 
The Lady Buffs added to their lead in the bottom of the first inning as Shanna McBroom singled to center field to drive in a run followed by a Smith two-run single to run the lead to 9-0, WT extended their lead in the third as Moore singled to center to drive in a run followed by a wild pitch that scored the junior from second base to make it 11-0.
 
Evelyn Baker added to the WT lead with a solo homerun off of the scoreboard in center field for the freshman's first career hit and long ball followed later in the inning by an India Holland RBI double to the left center field gap for her first career hit as the Lady Buffs extended the lead to 13-0.
 
Starkey picked up the win in the circle (11-0) for the Lady Buffs, giving up no runs on five hits with no walks and four strikeouts in the complete game shutout.
 
HOW IT HAPPENENED (GAME 2):
WT wasted little time getting on the board in the second inning as Suka Van Gurp singled thru the left side to score Hardin with one out followed by a bunt single by Starkey to score Coveney from third for the 2-0 lead, WT wasn't done yet as Smith continued her big day at the plate with a two-run double down the right field line to make it 4-0.
 
The Lady Buffs used the long ball again in the bottom of the third inning as Moore connected on her 20th homerun of the season, a solo bomb on top of the batting cages in left field to run the lead to 5-0. Starkey singled to center field to score Van Gurp from second base as the Denton native ended up at third following a UTPB error, McBroom added to the WT lead with a two-run bomb to left field to make it 8-0. The Lady Buffs would add an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth inning on a UTPB error to extend their lead to 9-0.
 
Kilee Halbert became WT's all-time career leader in victories as the senior moved to 14-4 overall on the season, allowing no runs on four hits with one walk and nine strikeouts in the complete game shutout. Halbert now has 71 victories in Maroon & White to pass former Lady Buff standout Marci Womack (2009-12) while also setting a new WT career record with her 14th shutout.
