Buffs Hit Season-High Five Home Runs in 21-12 Sweep of Eastern New Mexico

THE BASICS:
 
  • Score: West Texas A&M 21, Eastern New Mexico 12
 
  • Records: West Texas A&M 22-7, 4-0 LSC, Eastern New Mexico 14-10, 0-4 LSC
 
  • Location: Canyon, Texas (Wilder Park)
 
  • The Lead: A total of five home runs helped lead West Texas A&M to a 21-12 win Sunday afternoon for a series sweep of Eastern New Mexico at Wilder Park.  The Buffs had round-trippers from senior Bodie Bryan (2), senior Luis Amaro, senior Jimmy Cubillos and junior Nick Guaragna. 
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • The Greyhounds got on the board first four-straight singles with one out and back-to-back RBI singles from Alex DeLaCruz and Chris Padilla for a 3-0 lead in the top of the first.
  • ENMU added to its lead in the second, chasing WT starter Noah Draper from the game with a lead-off double to center, a RBI single and a sacrifice fly for a 5-0 lead.Junior Braden Baker relived Draper with two out in the top of the second.Baker got a fly out to right ending the inning.
  • Following a walk for the Buffs in the bottom of the second, junior Nick Garagna hit his first home run as a Buff – a two run shot to center pulling WT within 5-2.
  • Two walks from Victor Persad chased him from the game in favor of Blake Frye as the Buffs looked to continue a big inning.Frye walked junior Justice Nakagawa to load the bases. Senior Bodie Bryan drove in two with a RBI single through the left side for a 5-4 score.
  • ENMU made its second move to the bullpen of the inning as Michael Holliday replaced Frye with two on for the Buffs and two out.Senior Luis Amaro belted a three run shot to right for a 7-5 lead and his ninth round-tripper of the season as the Buffs batted around in the inning.
  • The Greyhounds scored one run in the top of the third for a 7-6 deficit on a RBI single from Michael Smith after a pair of wild pitches moved Paul Tapia to third.
  • In the fourth, Garlind Webster singled and Julian Heredia hit a double as the Buffs' "D" stepped up with a great throw from center to shortstop to home gunning Webster at the plate.On a 1-2 count with two out, Padilla came up with a RBI single for a 7-7 score.
  • Bryan put a two run shot to left center, putting WT up 9-7 in the bottom of the fourth for his second round-tripper of the year and the third of the game for the Buffs on five hits and nine runs.
  • Senior Jimmy Cubillos got into the home run act on back-to-back shots for his first of the season for a 10-7 lead.An inside-out double from junior Tag Baxter swelled the lead to 11-7.The Buffs then scored the 12th run on a wild pitch.
  • ENMU scored one run in the top of the fifth for a 12-8 deficit, but a great double play from freshman Tommy Williams ended the frame with a twin killing on a leaping catch and a dive back to second for the second out as the Greyhounds had a man at third.
  • Bryan belted his second home run of the game – a three run shot to right center for a 15-8 lead in the bottom of the fifth.
  • An RBI double and three run home run pulled ENMU within 16-12 in the top of the seventh – all with two outs and a hit batsmen brought the ninth batter to the plate in the inning as the Buffs replaced Baker with junior Dominic Yearego on the mound.
  • The Buffs added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh for an 18-12 score.A pair of doubles scored three runs for the Buffs for a 21-12 score.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • The Buffs scored a season-high 21 runs in the game on 14 hits with no errors as Baker (4-2) earned the win in relief, allowing seven hits, three earned runs, walked two and fanned two in 4.1 innings.
  • Bryan went 3 for 5 with four runs scored and a career-high seven RBI with two home runs, while Amaro went 3 for 5 with three runs and five RBI.
  • WT belted a season-high five home runs in the game as four Buffs had two or more hits in the contest.Guaragna finished 2 of 4 with two runs scored and three RBI.
  • ENMU had 12 runs on 17 hits with one error as Heredia was 3 for 6 with three runs scored and three RBI.
  • Frye (0-2) took the loss in relief of Persad going 0.1 innings, allowing one hit, two earned runs and walked one.
  • For the series Amaro hit .571 with seven runs scored on 8 of 14 from the plate, two doubles, four home runs and drove in 12, while slugging 1.571 and reaching base at a .588 clip, while Guaragna hit .538 on 7 of 13 with six runs scored, two doubles, one home run and six RBI.
  • As a team, the Buffs scored 46 runs with 43 hits in 123 at bats (.350), 15 doubles, one triple, eight home runs and 44 RBI as the team slugged .683 and reached base at a .448 clip.WT went 8 of 8 in stolen bases and had five errors leading to three unearned runs.
  • It marked the fourth sweep of the season for the Buffs.
 
 
UP NEXT:
 
  • The Buffs head to UT Permian Basin next week for a four-game series, then have an off week, before returning to Wilder Park Apr. 13 in a four-game series versus Cameron.
